Chapter 9 - Chapter 9

At home, Sophie had put the children to bed after a lot of struggle. They were unhappy that she did not allow them to be brought home by Drew, no Mr Anderson. She did not know how she suddenly felt so comfortable addressing him on first name basis. They had just met for goodness's sake and it had not even been twenty four hours.

"Goodnight boys," Sophie kissed her sleeping children , tugging the blankets around their little bodies and ruffling their coffee brown locks.

Immediately Sophie closed the door to the boys' room, Cam ,the youngest quickly got up and tiptoed to the door to make sure their mother was not within earshot.

"Come quickly guys, let's get started!"

George and Win, who had been waiting for the signal, quickly got up and moved to the door, their backpacks ready on the go.

George checked the door and signaledl with his hand for their brothers to come as the coast was clear.

They all moved to the corridor stealthily, their hands on their mouths, they were not even breathing.

George was thinking that their lives depended on what they were about to do. They had to find out . Finally, they reached the outer door and quietly sneaked out.

Meanwhile, Sophie on her big lonely bed could not stop thinking of Drew. She had never been so attracted to anyone before in her life. She sighed with regret.

If it were not for that story her mother had told her , she would have pursued the beautiful man with enthusiasm. Of course now she could not, she was a mother of three boys, she had to think of them. She was no more the Sophie Gale of the past. And she was still waiting for a miracle that would bring the father of her children to her.

That was all she needed.

At the other end of the town, the boys were knocking vigorously on a sturdy door that led to a quaint bungalow housing the only doctor in the community, Dr Macdonald, who had delivered the boys and Sophie's adopted father.

"Hold on, I am coming." He replied wiping his eyes and praying it was not a serious case.

He had really been tired from the hospital yesterday and he had been so happy to get the much needed rest

"Who is at the door honey?" Elizabeth, Macdonald' s wife, called out.

"I am checking" Dr Macdonald called back, yawning and trying to see clearly.

He reached the door and asked, "Who's there?"

"Grandpa, open the door." George yelled in a whisper from the other side of the door.

George? The triplets? At this time of the night? What was going on?

Dr Macdonald quickly opened the door and saw three little cherubic faces looking up to him in pajamas, to say the least.

"Hello grandpa," all three little boys chorused and went to hug Dr Macdonald by the knees.

He was so shocked to see them at that hour that he didn't know what to say.

"Children! What are you doing here at this hour? Where is your mother ? I hope there is nothing wrong."

He asked them while they were still hugging him.

"Grandpa, we are fine. Mom is okay, asleep at home." Cam answered.

"Okay, so what are you doing here? He asked squatting to the level of the children.

"Grandpa, I think we have found our father. " Win said.

"Really, that is great news. How did you find him and how do you know he is your father?" Dr Macdonald asked, smiling.

He knew very well that it was not possible but he could not underrate the little boys, they were geniuses and it's possible for them to find out anything if they put their little minds to it. He had to listen to them.

The children went ahead to tell their grandfather how they had met Drew, their similarities and how sure they were that he was their father .

"So,how do I come in? Your mother had said he was not your father."

The good doctor asked them with a skeptical look, wondering what the children wanted him to do. What new escapades had they come up with?

Cam quickly brought out something from his backpack. A golden strand of hair and held it up to Dr Macdonald.

"Is that what I think it is?"

They triplets nodded in agreement

"So you want me to….? "

They nodded again.

"Very well, I will carry out the test tomorrow but for now you need to run back home or do you want to spend the night here? "

"No , mom will be very worried," One of them said.

"Okay, goodnight boys and be careful on your way back, " George spoke up.

Dr Macdonald called to the boys who were already running out of the door. They waved back at him.

Dr Macdonald shut and locked the door, looking at the strand of hair in his palm. He shook his head, smiling.

"Those boys never cease to amaze me." He muttered, shaking his head.

He hoped the result of this test would finally bring everything to a conclusive end and his daughter would find the closure she so desperately needed.

The good doctor went back to his bedroom after putting the precious sample away to find his wife still under the covers.

"Who was at the door?" She asked.

"It was our grandkids."

That brought Elizabeth up, where are they? Did you give them a cup of cocoa? And why didn't you wake me up? She asked with a frown on her face.

"Don't worry, everything is okay. You know how mischievous they can be"

Dr Macdonald said, trying to hide the truth from his wife or he will never hear the end of it. He lay down beside his wife, remembering how he had found the pregnant Sophie all alone so long ago, the joy she had brought him and the gift of the beautiful grand children.

He knew God had specially brought Sophie and the children into his life to fill the vacuum of his own childlessness.

Sophie and the children had filled that place in his and the three years with them had made up for the thirty years of yearning.

While he was glad that the kids would find their father, he was suddenly afraid, so afraid that Sophie would be taken away from him , he was so afraid.

Back at Sophie's house, she was sound asleep after hours of turning and tossing, thinking about the beautiful man with the green eyes, oblivious to just how her well ordered life was about to be turned upside down….
