Chapter 1 - The Arrival

Chapter 1: The Arrival

Ogunshola stood at the edge of his farm, wiping the sweat off his brow as he looked towards the horizon. It was late afternoon, and the sun was beginning to sink low in the sky, casting long shadows over the thick forest beyond his land. His life in the small village of Aro had always been predictable, until the day something changed. Farounbi, the village oracle, had delivered an unsettling prophecy: the sacred grove would be disturbed, and from it, something sinister would emerge.

The prophecy spread through the village like wildfire, leaving the villagers whispering in fear. Ogunshola, though skeptical of the supernatural, felt a cold shiver crawl up his spine. The sacred grove, known as the home of the village's most revered deity, had been untouched for centuries. No one dared to go near it, but according to Farounbi, someone—or something—was going to disturb the ancient balance.

That evening, Ogunshola's wife, Rolake, noticed his unease. "You've been quiet, Ogun. What is troubling you?" she asked softly as they sat by the evening fire. Ogunshola shook his head, unwilling to burden her with his thoughts.

The following morning, Ogunshola went to the village council meeting. Farounbi was there, his weathered face solemn. The elders—Osabunmi, Akinlaja, and Ajagbe—sat in a circle, their expressions mirroring Farounbi's concern.

"Something stirs in the grove," Farounbi began in a low voice. "I fear that if we do nothing, Aro will face the wrath of the gods. We must find out who has been trespassing."

Ogunshola's good friend, Alabi, a bold hunter, stood. "If it is a matter of confronting the unknown, I will go to the sacred grove and see for myself. We cannot live in fear of shadows."

Farounbi's eyes met Alabi's. "This is not a task for mere men. The spirits will not forgive trespassers easily."

Despite the oracle's warning, Alabi was undeterred. He was the best hunter in the village, and he wasn't afraid of legends. Ogunshola admired his friend's bravery, but there was a gnawing feeling that this time, Alabi might be in over his head.
