Chereads / The billionaire contract husband / Chapter 3 - Bound to her whim

Chapter 3 - Bound to her whim

_Liam's Cafe_

Ryder pushed open the door to Liam's Cafe, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee surrounding him like a warm hug. Liam, his friend since childhood, looked up from wiping down the counter, concern drawn on his face.

"Ryder, what's going on? You look like you've lost your last friend," Liam said, his voice mixed with empathy.

Ryder slid onto a stool, running a hand through his hair, now tousled from the encounter with Vivian Blackwood. "It's just... I don't know what to do, Liam. I feel like I'm trapped."

Liam's expression turned serious. "You know I'm here for you, no matter what. What happened?"

Ryder took a deep breath, recounting his meeting with Vivian Blackwood, the billionaire heiress. "She offered me a contract – five years as her... companion. In exchange, she'll pay for Mom's surgery."

Liam's eyes widened, incredulity written across his face. "Vivian Blackwood? The Vivian Blackwood? Ryder, you can't be serious. She's got a reputation for chewing people up and spitting them out."

Ryder rubs his head, feeling the weight of his decision. "I know, Liam. But what choice do I have? Mom's life is on the line. And it's not just about the money... it's about the connections, the resources. Vivian Blackwood has the power to make things happen."

Liam leaned in, his voice low and urgent. "Ryder, listen to me. You're not thinking about the consequences. You're trading five years of your life for a chance at saving your mom. Is it worth it? You'll be nothing more than a tool in her game."

Ryder hesitated, uncertainty creeping in like a thief in the night.

Liam placed a hand on Ryder's shoulder, his grip firm. "Think about what you're giving up – your freedom, your autonomy... your dignity. You'll be a slave to her whims, Ryder. Is that really what you want?"

Ryder's eyes locked onto Liam's, searching for answers, searching for a way out.

"But what if it's the only way, Liam? What if this is the only chance Mom has?" Ryder's voice cracked.

Liam's expression softened, his voice filled with compassion. "Then we'll find another way together. We'll scour the earth for options, Ryder. But don't do this. Don't sell yourself to Vivian Blackwood."

Ryder's mind raced with conflicting emotions, the battle between his heart and head raging on.

"I'll think about it, Liam," Ryder promised, knowing he'd already made up his mind, knowing he'd already surrendered to the darkness that was Vivian Blackwood.

Liam's eyes narrowed, sensing Ryder's decision. "You're going to do it, aren't you?"

Ryder nodded, resigned

Liam's grip on Ryder's shoulder tightened. "Fine. But know this, Ryder: I'll be watching, and I'll do everything in my power to keep you safe. You're not alone in this."

Ryder smiled weakly, grateful for his friend's unrelenting support, grateful for the lifeline Liam offered in the midst of the storm that was Vivian Blackwood.

As he left the café, Ryder felt the weight of his decision settle upon him like a burden, the darkness of his future looming ahead.

Ryder walked slowly into his sitting room, the worn furniture and faded walls a reflection of his own exhausted state. The air was thick with the weight of his thoughts, each one complicated in a web of uncertainty. He felt like a ship without anchor, lost at a sea.

Luna breezed into the room, her bright smile a clear contrast to Ryder's dark mood. Her hair fell down her back, and her eyes sparkled in the dim light of the sitting room. Her bright dress seemed to glow with an inner light, a beacon of hope in the darkness.

"Hey, Ryder! How was your day?" Luna asked, sitting down beside him on the couch. Her voice was a gentle breeze on a summer's day, soothing and calming.

Ryder hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. But Luna's curious gaze wore him down, and he found himself recounting the events of the day, from the meeting with Vivian Blackwood to his conversation with Liam.

Luna listened with rapt attention, her eyes growing wider with each passing moment. When Ryder got to the part about Vivian's proposal, Luna's expression changed from curiosity to shock.

"Ryder, that's... that's a huge decision! Are you sure you're ready for that?" Luna asked, her voice full of concern. "I mean, think about it, Ryder. Five years of your life, bound to that woman. It's a high price to pay."

Ryder shrugged, feeling the weight of his decision pressing down on him like a physical force. "I don't know, Luna. I feel like I'm out of options. But what choice do I have? Mum's life is on the line."

Luna's face set in determination. "We'll find another way, Ryder. But if this is the only way to save Mum... then you should do it. I'll support you every step of the way. We'll face it together, as a family."

Just then, the phone rang, beeping in the silence. Ryder's heart skipped a beat as he answered, his mind racing with worst-case scenarios.

"Ryder, it's Dr. Lee. I'm afraid your mother's condition has taken a turn for the worse. She has less than 24 hours to live. You need to find the money, Ryder. Now." The doctor's voice was a cold wind, breaking Ryder's hopes like a knife.

Ryder's mind went blank, his thoughts consumed by a singular focus. He assured the doctor he'd find the money and hung up, his heart racing with urgency.

Without a word, Ryder leapt off the couch and sprinted out of the house, leaving Luna's concerned cries behind. He ran through the streets, his feet running fast on the pavement in a desperate bid to reach Vivian's mansion.

He had to save his mother. No matter the cost.

_Vivian's Mansion_

Ryder's footsteps echoed through the halls of Vivian Blackwood's mansion, the warm light of chandeliers casting shadows on the marble floor. He had been summoned to Vivian's office, a room rumored to be the epicenter of her power and influence.

As he entered the office, Vivian looked up from behind her desk, she is full of elegance. Her eyes shone with triumph, and Ryder's anxiety rose.

"Ryder, darling," she spoke softly, her voice dripping with satisfaction. "I knew you'd come to your senses."

Ryder approached the desk, his heart pounding in his chest. "Just give me the money for my mother's surgery," he said, his voice tight with desperation.

Vivian's smile grew wider, her lips curling upward. "Oh, Ryder. You're so focused on the money. But there's so much more at stake."

"You'll be committing to a five-year term," Vivian began, her voice weaving a spell of obligation and duty. "During that time, you'll reside here, at my mansion, and accompany me to social events and functions as required."

Ryder felt a cold down his spine as Vivian continued.

"You'll also be required to maintain confidentiality regarding my personal and business affairs," she said, her eyes glinting with triumph. "And, of course, you'll receive a monthly allowance of $10,000."

"But there's one more condition, Ryder," Vivian added. "If, for any reason, you choose to dissolve the contract before the five years are up, you'll be required to return every penny I've spent on you. Every dress, every dinner, every luxury. You'll leave here with nothing."

Ryder's eyes widened in alarm. "That's...that's not fair," he stammered.

Vivian's smile grew wider. "Oh, Ryder. You should have thought of that before you came crawling to me for help. Now, are you willing to accept my terms?"

Ryder hesitated, his mind racing with the implications. But the thought of his mother's life hanging in the balance made his decision for him.

"Yes," he said finally, his voice barely above a whisper.

Vivian's eyes sparkled with triumph as she handed him the contract. Ryder took it, his heart heavy with doubt, and signed his name.

The pen seemed to move of its own accord, as if driven by a force beyond his control. And when he looked up, Vivian's smile was like a knife to his heart.

"Welcome to your new life, Ryder," she smiled contentedly, her voice dripping with satisfaction.

Ryder felt like he was drowning in a sea of opulence, the luxurious surroundings mocking him with their extravagance. He was trapped, bound to Vivian's every whim, and he knew it.

"And, of course, you'll need to accompany me to the gala tonight," Vivian added, her eyes sparkling. "It's the perfect opportunity for us to make our first public appearance together."
