Chereads / Moxie: The Evil Emperor / Chapter 85 - Shattered Silence

Chapter 85 - Shattered Silence

The echoes of their hurried footsteps filled the palace halls as Moxie and Elara ran, the emperor's laughter still ringing in their ears. The night was no longer a cloak of safety but a canvas of shadows that seemed to twist and reach for them. Moxie's heart raced, each thud resonating with the dire urgency of their situation. They had to escape and relay the information they'd gathered to the resistance.

"Where are we going?" Elara gasped, barely keeping up with Moxie's frantic pace.

"The servant's quarters," Moxie replied between breaths. "There's a passageway through the kitchens that leads to the outer walls. If we can make it there, we have a chance."

Elara nodded, her face flushed with fear. Behind them, the faint hum of magic filled the air, a chilling reminder of the emperor's presence looming ever closer. The corridor seemed endless, stretching ahead like a tunnel with no exit. Moxie pushed forward, refusing to let the panic drown her focus. She knew the risks of being caught. She knew what the emperor was capable of.

They turned sharply into a narrow hallway, the dim glow of torchlight casting eerie shadows along the stone walls. Moxie could feel the energy pulsing from the emperor, almost like a heartbeat pressing in on them from all directions. Her senses were on high alert, the hair on the back of her neck standing up as if the darkness itself was alive.

As they reached the door to the kitchens, Moxie skidded to a halt and shoved it open, dragging Elara through. The room was silent, empty except for the remnants of the evening's meal preparations. The smells of roasted meat and herbs hung thick in the air, almost nauseating in their intensity.

"Where's the passage?" Elara whispered urgently, her eyes darting around the room.

Moxie didn't reply immediately, scanning the walls for the old door she had heard about from the other servants. Her hands shook slightly as she felt along the stone, searching for a latch or trigger. Every second counted. Behind them, a soft, sinister whisper filled the air, like a breeze carrying the echoes of the emperor's power.

"Hurry, Moxie!" Elara hissed, her voice tinged with rising panic.

Moxie's fingers finally brushed against a rough stone protrusion. She pressed it, and with a soft click, a section of the wall slid open, revealing a narrow passage. "Here!" she whispered, pulling Elara inside. She closed the door behind them, plunging the passageway into darkness.

The air was damp and cool, the walls pressing in on them from both sides. Moxie could hear Elara's ragged breathing and feel the pounding of her own heart. The path ahead was barely visible, a thin line of light seeping through cracks in the stone above. They moved forward cautiously, the floor uneven beneath their feet.

"What now?" Elara asked, her voice trembling. "We can't outrun him forever."

"We just need to get out of the palace," Moxie replied, her mind racing. "Once we're outside, we'll head to the forest. The resistance has scouts watching the area. They'll help us."

They crept along the passage, the silence punctuated only by the distant echoes of the palace. Moxie tried to ignore the feeling of eyes on her, the prickling sensation at the back of her neck. It was as if the emperor's gaze could penetrate even these stone walls, tracking their every move.

The passage eventually opened up into a small chamber. Moxie stepped forward, scanning the room for the exit she knew should be here. Her eyes caught sight of an iron door at the far end, partially hidden by a stack of old crates.

"There," she pointed, moving quickly toward it. Elara followed, her movements tense and guarded.

Just as they reached the door, a cold, biting wind filled the chamber. The air crackled with energy, and a figure materialized out of the darkness. Moxie's breath hitched in her throat as the emperor emerged, his eyes gleaming with a predatory glint.

"Leaving so soon?" he drawled, his voice soft yet carrying an edge of malice that sent chills down their spines.

Moxie instinctively stepped in front of Elara, her mind scrambling for a plan. The emperor's presence filled the room, his power a suffocating force that pressed down on them.

"Did you really think you could escape?" he continued, his gaze locked on Moxie. "That you could spy on me and simply walk away?"

Moxie squared her shoulders, meeting his gaze with as much defiance as she could muster. "You underestimate us," she replied, her voice steady despite the fear clawing at her insides. "We know your secrets now. And we will stop you."

The emperor's lips curled into a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Bold words for a foolish girl," he sneered, raising his hand. Shadows began to swirl around him, dark tendrils of magic that pulsed with an unnatural energy.

Moxie glanced at Elara, a silent command passing between them. "Go," she mouthed, hoping Elara would understand. Elara's eyes widened in horror, but she nodded slightly, inching back toward the door.

The emperor's eyes flicked to Elara, and in that split second, Moxie lunged. She threw herself at the emperor, summoning every ounce of strength and courage she had. She felt the icy touch of his magic wrap around her, a freezing grip that threatened to crush her will. But she fought against it, her determination burning fiercely in her chest.

"Elara, run!" Moxie screamed, her voice echoing off the stone walls. She struggled against the emperor's hold, her vision blurring from the strain. She had to give Elara a chance, even if it meant sacrificing herself.

Elara hesitated for a heartbeat, torn between fear and loyalty. Then, with a sob of desperation, she turned and bolted through the iron door, vanishing into the night.

The emperor watched her go, his eyes narrowing. "Such bravery," he murmured, his attention shifting back to Moxie. "But futile."

Moxie gritted her teeth, the pain of his magic searing through her. She refused to let him see her break, refused to give him the satisfaction. "You'll lose," she spat, her voice hoarse. "The resistance will fight, and you will fall."

The emperor chuckled softly, a sound devoid of warmth. "We shall see, little spy," he replied, his grip tightening. "We shall see."

Darkness closed in around Moxie, her consciousness slipping away. The last thing she heard was the emperor's cold laughter, echoing through the chamber as the world faded to black.
