Chereads / Moxie: The Evil Emperor / Chapter 34 - Whispers of the Past

Chapter 34 - Whispers of the Past

The evening air in the dormitories was thick with tension after Lady Seraphine's unexpected arrival. The girls, exhausted from the day's grueling training, moved quietly, their eyes shifting nervously in the dim light of their quarters. Moxie sat on her bunk, staring at the ceiling, her mind racing with unanswered questions. Who was this new overseer, and why did she seem so intent on testing them?

Just as Moxie was beginning to drift into uneasy sleep, a faint rustling outside the window caught her attention. She sat up, her senses alert, and crept toward the glass. The shadows outside shifted, and a figure moved stealthily across the courtyard. Moxie squinted, trying to make out who it was.

"Did you hear that?" Lily's voice came from behind her, startling Moxie.

"Yeah," Moxie whispered back, gesturing toward the window. "Someone's out there. I'm going to take a closer look."

Lily grabbed her arm. "Are you crazy? You heard what the warden said – if we're caught outside after lights out…"

"I know," Moxie replied, a mix of fear and curiosity pushing her forward. "But I have to see what's going on. We can't just sit here in the dark, waiting to be told what to do."

Lily hesitated, then sighed, releasing Moxie's arm. "Fine. But be careful. I'll keep watch here."

With a nod, Moxie slipped out of the room and crept down the corridor, careful to avoid the guards patrolling the halls. The air was cool and damp as she exited the building, hugging the shadows as she approached the courtyard. Her heart pounded in her chest, each step echoing in the silence of the night.

As she neared the courtyard's edge, Moxie crouched behind a stone wall and peeked around the corner. There, in the dim moonlight, she saw a group of girls gathered in a tight circle. Moxie recognized a few of them—fellow trainees, their faces tense with apprehension.

At the center of the group stood a tall figure cloaked in black, speaking in hushed tones. Moxie strained to hear the conversation, catching snippets of words carried by the wind.

"…must not let them break us…"

"…we need to be ready when the time comes…"

Moxie's heart skipped a beat. Were they planning something? She leaned forward, trying to get a better view, when a sudden voice behind her made her jump.

"What do you think you're doing?"

Moxie spun around, her eyes wide with shock. Standing there, arms crossed and a stern look on his face, was Riley, the boy she had encountered before in the bathroom. His presence here was as much a mystery as the gathering she had been spying on.

"Riley?" Moxie hissed, backing away from the courtyard. "What are you doing here?"

"I could ask you the same thing," he replied, his gaze flicking toward the group in the courtyard. "This place is crawling with guards. You're going to get yourself caught."

"Not if you stop shouting," Moxie snapped, her nerves fraying. "I was trying to find out what they're planning."

Riley sighed and stepped closer, lowering his voice. "And what makes you think you'll get anywhere by spying on them like this? Look, I've been here longer than you. I know how dangerous it is to stick your nose where it doesn't belong."

Moxie narrowed her eyes. "Then maybe you know something. What's going on here? Why are they meeting in secret?"

Riley hesitated, his eyes scanning the courtyard. "Look, it's complicated. There's more going on in this place than just the training. Some of the girls… they're preparing for something, something they believe can change things. But it's risky, and if the emperor or the warden finds out…"

He trailed off, leaving the warning hanging in the air. Moxie glanced back at the group, her resolve hardening. "Then we need to find out more. We can't just sit around waiting to be used as pawns."

Riley shook his head, a mixture of concern and admiration in his eyes. "You're reckless, you know that? Fine. But if we're going to do this, we need to be smart. We'll keep an eye on them, but no more sneaking out on your own. Got it?"

Moxie hesitated, then nodded. "Deal. But you have to tell me everything you know."

He sighed. "Fair enough. I'll tell you what I can, but some things you're better off not knowing. Trust me on that."

They exchanged a wary look before retreating into the shadows, making their way back to the dormitory. As they slipped inside, Moxie's mind raced with possibilities. Who was leading that group in the courtyard? What were they planning? And where did Riley fit into all of this?

Back in the safety of their room, Moxie turned to Riley. "So, start talking. Who was that out there?"

Riley sat on the edge of a bunk, rubbing the back of his neck. "Her name is Elise. She's… well, she's one of the few who's been here long enough to know how things work. She and a few others believe there's a way to overthrow the emperor, or at least escape his grip."

Moxie's eyes widened. "Overthrow the emperor? Are they insane?"

"Probably," Riley replied with a grim smile. "But they're desperate. The emperor's reach is vast, and his power… it's not natural. Some say he has dark abilities that no one fully understands. That's why so many people fear him."

A chill ran down Moxie's spine. Dark abilities? The rumors she had heard in whispers over the years suddenly felt all too real. If the emperor truly possessed powers beyond the ordinary, then escaping or fighting back would be more dangerous than she had imagined.

"But why now?" Moxie pressed. "What's changed?"

Riley glanced toward the window, his expression hardening. "The emperor is preparing for something, something big. Word is, he's gathering forces for a campaign that will change the entire empire. Elise and her group believe it's their last chance to make a move, before it's too late."

Moxie felt a surge of conflicting emotions—fear, anger, hope. "Then we need to be ready," she said firmly. "If there's a chance, even the slightest one, we have to take it."

Riley studied her for a moment, then nodded. "Alright, but we do this cautiously. One wrong move, and we'll end up in a place far worse than this school."

Moxie managed a grim smile. "I'm not planning on making any mistakes. We'll find out what Elise is up to and decide our next move."

With their uneasy alliance formed, Moxie felt a flicker of hope amidst the uncertainty. The road ahead was fraught with peril, but she was no longer alone in facing it. Together, they might just uncover the secrets hidden within the emperor's grip—and perhaps, a way to break free from it.

For now, the whispers of rebellion would remain just that: whispers. But soon, Moxie vowed, those whispers would become a roar.
