Chapter 59 - Chapter 59: A Family Reunion

The afternoon sun broke through the clouds, casting a soft glow over the road as Grant Ward drove toward the boarding school where his younger brother, Thomas, attended. Maria Hill sat beside him, watching the landscape change as they left the city behind. The air in the car was calm, but there was an anticipation in the air.

Maria had heard many stories about Thomas, but she had never met him in person. For Grant, this was an important moment. He was finally at a point in his life where he could feel confident sharing more of his personal story, and Maria, as the person closest to him, deserved to know a crucial part of his life.

"Thomas will be glad to meet you," Grant said, breaking the silence, his eyes still fixed on the road.

Maria smiled, turning her attention back to him.

"I'm excited. It seems he was lucky to have you as a brother," she said, trying to ease some of the tension she felt from Grant.

Grant sighed, remembering the hard times of his youth, and how he had done everything he could to make sure Thomas wouldn't have to go through the same experiences.

"I did what I could," he said, his voice low. "It wasn't easy. When I was in the Navy and got more tenure, the first thing I did was get Thomas out of the house. He was stuck in that toxic environment and he didn't deserve it. I got him into a good boarding school, and he's been doing great ever since."

Maria nodded, understanding the weight of Grant's words. She knew how hard it was for him to talk about his childhood, but she also knew that he had done everything he could to protect his younger brother.

"It must be good to see he's doing well now," Maria said.

"Yeah," Grant agreed. "Thomas has made a lot of friends there. He's settled in well and seems… happy. That's all I ever wanted for him."

As the car drove down the road, the comfortable silence returned. Maria could sense how important this reunion was to Grant and was determined to be as supportive as possible.

Finally, after a few hours of traveling, they arrived at the boarding school. It was a large, well-kept school, with vast green fields all around and buildings with traditional architecture. Grant parked the car and they both got out, walking towards the main gate.

Thomas Ward was waiting near the gate, his face lit up with a bright smile when he saw his older brother. He had grown since the last time Grant had seen him in person, now a young man with a confident posture and a twinkle in his eyes.

"Grant!" Thomas shouted, running to hug his brother.

Grant smiled broadly, feeling a comforting warmth at seeing his brother so happy. He opened his arms and hugged Thomas tightly, as if he didn't want to let go.

"Hey, kid! How are you?" Grant asked, his voice full of affection.

"I'm great!" Thomas replied, still smiling. "And you? It's been a long time!"

Grant patted Thomas on the back before pulling back a little to get a good look at his brother. He was proud to see how Thomas had grown into such a confident young man.

"I'm fine. I've been busy with work, but I'm here now," Grant said.

It was then that Thomas noticed Maria, who was standing next to Grant, watching the interaction with a gentle smile.

"And who's this?" Thomas asked curiously.

Grant put his hand on Maria's shoulder and introduced her with a smile on his face.

"This is Maria Hill. She's… well, she's my girlfriend," he said, a little hesitantly, but proudly.

Maria extended her hand to Thomas, smiling warmly.

"It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Thomas. I've heard so many good things about you," Maria said.

Thomas shook Maria's hand and smiled back, clearly impressed.

"It's my pleasure," Thomas replied. "I've heard a lot about you too. It seems my brother has finally met his match."

Grant chuckled, shaking his head.

"He always has an answer ready," Grant said, looking at Maria with a smile on his face.

The three laughed, and the initial tension dissipated. Thomas soon invited them to tour the school, proud to show them the place where he had made so many friends and learned so much. As they walked through the school grounds, Thomas pointed out the different buildings and told stories about his friends, teachers, and the adventures he had had there.

Grant looked around, feeling an inner peace as he saw how his younger brother was thriving. When he had rescued Thomas from that abusive environment, all he had wanted was to give his brother a chance at a normal life, away from the shadows that had haunted both of their youths.

"It seems like you've really adapted well here," Grant commented as they walked.

Thomas nodded, his smile never wavering. "Yeah, it was hard at first, but after a while, I made friends. Besides, I knew you were always there for me, even from afar. That made all the difference."

Grant put his hand on Thomas' shoulder, squeezing it lightly.

— You did all the hard work, Thomas. I just gave the first push. — Grant replied, his voice full of pride.

As they walked, Maria watched the dynamic between the two brothers. She could see how much Grant cared for Thomas and how he was willing to do anything to ensure his brother had a better future. It was a side of Grant that few knew, and Maria felt privileged to be there, witnessing it.

— And you, Maria? — Thomas asked, interrupting her thoughts. — What's it like dating this guy here?

Maria smiled, amused by the question.

— Well, he's... intense, as you can imagine. — she joked. — But he's also one of the most dedicated and protective people I've ever met. So, I think I'm doing well.

Thomas chuckled, clearly enjoying Maria's answer.

"That sounds like the Grant I know," he said, looking at his brother with a fond expression.

After walking around campus, Thomas led them to a small picnic area where they could sit and talk more calmly. Grant sat next to Maria, while Thomas pulled up a chair to face them.

"You know, Grant, I always thought you'd be the one to be alone," Thomas said with a mischievous smile. "You've always been so focused on work and protecting me that I never imagined you'd find someone."

Grant chuckled, shaking his head.

"I admit I wasn't looking for this. But sometimes life surprises us," he said, looking at Maria with a sincere smile.

Maria returned his gaze, feeling grateful to have Grant in her life. Even with all the difficulties they faced at work and in their personal lives, they had found a way to be together and support each other.

"What about you, Thomas?" — Maria asked, changing the focus of the conversation. — What are your plans for the future?

Thomas thought for a moment before answering.

"I'm not sure yet. I really like it here, but I'm also thinking about following in Grant's footsteps, maybe joining the Navy or something." — he said, looking at his brother for approval.

Grant frowned for a moment, clearly worried about the idea of Thomas following the same career path as him. He knew how dangerous and exhausting military work was, and the last thing he wanted was to see his younger brother face the same challenges.

"Thomas, I want you to do what makes you happy," Grant said, his voice serious. "But I also want you to think carefully before making a decision. Military life isn't easy, and you have many other options."

Thomas nodded, understanding Grant's concern.

"I know. I'm still thinking about it. I won't make any rash decisions," he assured.

Maria looked at Grant, realizing how much he worried about his brother's future. She knew this was a conversation they would have to have at some point, but for now, she was happy to see the two of them together, sharing a moment of peace and tranquility.

As the sun began to set, they continued to talk, laugh, and share stories. Grant knew that life would never be completely peaceful, but moments like this made it all worth it. He had protected Thomas, given him a new chance, and now he could see the results of all his hard work.

And with Maria by his side, Grant knew that he too was finding what he had always wanted: a family, a place where he belonged.
