Chapter 34: The Path Forward
Sylthana Silverleaf's voice lingered in the air, commanding the attention of every student in the Grand Hall. Her silver hair shimmered in the enchanted light, and her emerald eyes gleamed with authority. The weight of the moment hung heavy as she stood at the podium, her presence alone silencing the students.
"Here at Elysium Academy," she began, her voice clear and deliberate, "we cultivate not only the talents you were born with but also the discipline and wisdom to wield them with purpose. Power, untempered by knowledge, will lead to ruin. Your time here will challenge you—not just in your abilities, but in your character."
The room filled with hushed murmurs. Some students exchanged nervous glances, hands clenching or fidgeting with their clothes. The weight of Sylthana's words sank in, the pressure of the unknown creeping in as students sized up their peers. No one wanted to fall behind, and for many, the fear of failure hung heavily in the air. Eyes drifted toward those rumored to be stronger, awakened, or more confident.
Argus stood calmly, listening. While tension buzzed around him, his sharp gaze stayed fixed on Sylthana. The nervous energy of others didn't affect him. He understood this game already—this wasn't just about attending school; it was about claiming power and influence. The hierarchy was being established, and Argus already knew where he stood.
Sylthana raised a hand, and the murmurs quieted. Her tone grew sharper, more authoritative. "Your living arrangements will reflect your achievements. Each of you will reside in your respective dorms, where the highest-performing students will be given more privileged accommodations. However, status at Elysium Academy is not guaranteed. Even those with the most noble bloodlines can lose their rank if they fail to rise to the challenge."
The weight of her words settled over the room, and Argus noticed the slight tension in the postures of some students, particularly the nobles. It was clear many had assumed their birthright would protect them, but this was the academy—titles wouldn't be enough.
"And for the most promising among you," Sylthana continued, her voice ringing through the hall, "we have already determined the top 10 students of your year. These students will begin with seats of distinction—positions that reflect both potential and expectation."
The room fell into a tense silence. All eyes were on Sylthana now. Some students held their breath, waiting for their name, while others exchanged anxious glances, unsure of where they stood.
Argus remained still, calm, though his eyes sharpened slightly. This was the moment where the academy's hierarchy would become visible.
"However," Sylthana added, "do not grow complacent. These seats are not permanent. They can and will be claimed by others if you falter."
With a flick of her wrist, a magical scroll appeared, unfurling in midair before her. Sylthana's voice echoed as she announced the names.
"1st seat: Argus Augustine."
There was a ripple of murmurs through the crowd as students turned their attention toward Argus as he stood. He didn't react outwardly, keeping his expression neutral, though a faint sense of satisfaction lingered. He had expected this. The whispers continued, carrying a mix of envy, curiosity, and respect, but Argus paid them little mind. His focus remained steady.
"2nd seat: Thalor."
The hall fell into stunned silence for a moment, students glancing at each other in confusion. A commoner holding such a high rank? Thalor, a wiry boy with messy brown hair, stood up stiffly. His posture straightened, and his lips curled into a faint smirk. His eyes flicked toward Argus for only a brief moment before shifting away, the disdain in his gaze clear. There was a flicker of tension in his movements, as if he were still processing his own ranking, but he clung to it fiercely.
Argus watched with mild interest. Thalor's apparent pride and confidence were at odds with the unease in his posture. It didn't concern Argus too much, though the surprise of the hall was palpable.
"3rd seat: Elara Valen."
Elara rose, her silver hair glinting under the light. She caught Argus's gaze briefly, offering a small nod. Though she maintained her composure, there was a spark in her eyes—something competitive, maybe even a touch of eagerness. Argus noted the flicker but didn't dwell on it. They had met before, but there was still a distance between them. He would see more of her in time.
"4th seat: Nerissa Drakthorn."
Nerissa stood next, and immediately, her golden eyes locked onto Argus. There was no subtlety in her gaze—she stared at him with a predator's focus, her draconic features faintly shimmering as if amplifying her intensity. She wanted his seat, and her intentions were clear from the look she gave him.
Argus met her gaze, the corner of his mouth lifting slightly. He was intrigued by her intensity and found her determination worth watching.
"5th seat: Luther Varian."
Luther stood up, his black hair neatly in place and glasses glinting as he gave a measured nod. His demeanor was precise, much like the barriers he was known for creating. Though Argus didn't know the exact nature of his power, it was clear Luther had a sharp, tactical mind—an asset that would prove useful in the future.
"6th seat: Valerie Drexlar."
Valerie sprang to her feet, her fiery hair catching the light as she flashed a wide grin at Argus. Though her energy was infectious, Argus couldn't help but feel a quiet surprise that she was only ranked 6th. Given that she had awakened at 10, he had expected her to rank higher. Still, he knew her tenacity well, and was confident she would climb the ranks quickly. This was just the beginning for her.
"7th seat: Silara Duskwalker."
The Dark Elf girl stood up, her presence quiet but commanding attention. Argus hadn't heard of her before, but it wasn't lost on him that a commoner like her had achieved 7th seat. That alone was reason enough to keep an eye on her. It might not hurt to consider sponsoring or recruiting someone with her potential.
"8th seat: Lysandra Noctis."
Lysandra rose with a graceful elegance, her pale skin almost glowing under the enchanted lights. She exuded an air of nobility, her movements fluid and calculated. Argus didn't know much about her yet, but her presence hinted at someone used to standing out.
"9th seat: Kurogane Stormclaw."
Kurogane, a Beastman with wolf-like features, stood tall, his muscular frame hard to ignore. Argus took note of the raw physical strength Kurogane displayed, but he knew that brute force alone wouldn't keep him at this rank for long. Still, he was someone to watch.
"10th seat: Aya Hoshizora."
Aya, the small Fox Youkai, leaped up with a mischievous grin, her tail swishing behind her. She seemed to relish the attention, flashing a playful smile to the room. Argus took note of her lighthearted demeanor but didn't dwell on her ranking for now. Time would reveal more.
As Sylthana finished announcing the top 10, murmurs and whispers spread across the hall. Many were still reeling from the surprise of Thalor's placement and the diversity of those ranked. The tension was thick, and anticipation for what lay ahead filled the air.
Argus found himself intrigued by the diversity of races in the room—elves, beastmen, vampires, and other non-human species. It was his first time seeing them in such proximity. Growing up in a relatively isolated world of nobles, this was an entirely new experience. He felt a quiet curiosity, a desire to observe these different beings more closely. Their powers, their cultures—it was all a puzzle he intended to understand.
Sylthana's voice cut through the noise once more. "These rankings are based on your initial potential, but remember—this is only the beginning. Your seat can be taken by any who prove themselves more worthy. Stay vigilant, for complacency will only lead to your downfall."
With that, the assembly was dismissed, and the students began to file out of the hall.
As Argus exited the hall, Valerie bounded up beside him, her energy as fiery as ever. "First seat, huh? No surprise there," she teased with a playful grin.
Argus smirked. "Did you expect anything less?"
"I'll be up there soon enough," she replied with a wink, clearly enjoying herself.
Elara soon joined them, her steps quick as she caught up. "It's only the start," she said, but her voice carried a hint of challenge. "Plenty of people will want to knock you down, Argus. You too, Valerie."
Argus chuckled. "They're welcome to try."
Elara flashed a grin. "Maybe I'll beat them to it."
Valerie laughed. "Looks like we've got some competition right here."
The three of them moved through the academy grounds, feeling the weight of eyes on them. Argus could already sense the currents shifting around him—rivalries forming, ambitions rising. But he wasn't concerned. He had claimed the top spot, and he intended to keep it.
