Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Planning the First Strike

The rebel camp was a hive of activity as the sun climbed higher in the sky. The resistance had decided it was time to make their first significant move against the emperor's forces, and the target was a supply convoy that was scheduled to pass through a remote stretch of forest.

Austan stood at the center of a makeshift command area, surrounded by maps, documents, and a group of rebels. The tent, usually reserved for discussions of strategy, was buzzing with a new level of urgency. Elara, the leader, was at the forefront, her sharp eyes scanning the maps laid out on the table. The walls of the tent were lined with sketches and notes detailing the convoy's route, possible ambush points, and the logistics of their plan.

Elara's voice cut through the murmur of voices. "Alright, let's review the plan once more. Our goal is to hit the convoy as it crosses the northern pass. We have a small window of opportunity—just before it reaches the checkpoint. If we time it right, we can seize a substantial portion of their supplies and create a significant disruption."

Austan's eyes were fixed on the map, noting the key points marked with red circles and arrows. His mind raced as he tried to grasp the complexity of the plan.

Elara continued, "The convoy is expected to have about twelve guards, along with the driver and a few high-ranking officials. Our primary targets are the guards and the supplies. We'll use the forest cover to our advantage and set up a blockade at the choke point."

Austan raised his hand, catching Elara's attention. "What if the convoy has reinforcements? Or if they're prepared for an ambush?"

Elara nodded, acknowledging Austan's concern. "Good question. We have scouts monitoring the area, and we'll need to be prepared for contingencies. Roderic, how are the scouts reporting?"

Roderic, standing to the side with a small group of rebels, stepped forward. "The scouts have reported no immediate reinforcements, but the convoy's schedule could change. We'll need to be ready to adapt if necessary. They're also carrying a small escort of mages, which could complicate things."

Elara's face tightened. "We'll need to take them out quickly and efficiently. Austan, you'll be in charge of leading the diversionary team. Your job is to create a distraction that will draw the mages away from the convoy's main area."

Austan felt a surge of adrenaline. It was one thing to be a part of the planning, but leading a team in the field was a new challenge. He nodded firmly, determined to rise to the occasion.

As dusk approached, the camp was abuzz with final preparations. Weapons were checked, supplies were packed, and every member of the team was briefed on their roles. Elara moved among them, offering words of encouragement and ensuring that everyone was ready for the mission ahead.

Austan met with his diversionary team, a small group of rebels skilled in stealth and deception. They huddled around a fire, discussing their approach. The plan was to create a diversion that would draw the mages away from the convoy's main route, allowing the main force to strike with minimal interference.

"We'll use smoke signals and a series of controlled explosions to create confusion," Austan explained. "The goal is to split the mages from the convoy and make them believe there's a larger threat than what we're actually planning."

One of the rebels, a seasoned fighter named Kai, nodded. "Sounds solid. I'll handle the explosives. Just make sure we're clear on the timing."

Austan glanced at Kai, appreciating the confidence. "We'll coordinate with the main force through hand signals and code words. If anything goes wrong, we'll have to improvise."

The team's focus was intense as they went over the details. Each member was assigned specific tasks, from setting up the diversion to securing the retreat path. Austan felt a sense of camaraderie and purpose as they worked together, their shared goal binding them in a way that was both exhilarating and comforting.

As night fell, the rebels settled into their respective positions, preparing for the assault. Austan found a quiet corner of the camp to collect his thoughts. He reviewed the plans once more, mentally rehearsing the sequence of actions. His heart was a turbulent mix of anticipation and anxiety.

Elara approached him, sensing his inner turmoil. "You're ready, Austan. I've seen you grow from someone who was uncertain to a leader capable of making a difference. Trust in your preparation and your team."

Austan looked up, gratitude in his eyes. "Thank you, Elara. I won't let you down."

Elara's gaze softened. "I know you won't. Remember, this is just the beginning. Every step we take brings us closer to challenging the emperor's rule. Stay focused and stay safe."

The night was cool and clear as Austan and his diversionary team moved into position. The forest was silent, save for the occasional rustle of leaves and the distant chirping of nocturnal creatures. The convoy was due to arrive at the designated spot within the hours.

Austan's team positioned themselves strategically along the route. Smoke bombs were readied, and the explosives were carefully set up. Every detail had been meticulously planned, and now it was a matter of execution.

The first light of dawn filtered through the dense canopy of the forest, casting a soft glow on the prepared positions of the rebel forces. The air was charged with anticipation as the rebels took their places, hidden among the trees and foliage. The supply convoy was expected to arrive at any moment, and every member of the team was poised for action.

Austan, standing beside Elara, could feel the tension in the air.

Elara gave him a reassuring nod. "Remember, Austan, stick to the plan. The diversion was meant to buy us this opportunity. Your role is crucial in disrupting the convoy and securing the supplies. Stay sharp."

Austan nodded, focusing on the path ahead. The convoy's approach was imminent, and every sound of the forest seemed to amplify the growing tension. He glanced over at his team, a group of seasoned rebels who had quickly grown to respect his leadership.

The sound of distant wheels and the clatter of metal reached them, signaling the convoy's arrival.

Austan's heart pounded as he signaled to his team, initiating the first phase of their plan. The first smoke bomb was ignited, sending a plume of thick, dark smoke into the air. The sight of the smoke caused immediate confusion among the convoy's guards and mages.

Austan and his team moved swiftly, setting off the controlled explosions to amplify the diversion.
