Ariana POV
The dungeons looked even creepier and more forbidding than anything she'd seen in the movies. The Catacombs of Paris didn't give her chills like this.
The dark stairway led down to the dungeon, with recessed lighting providing scant illumination. The clicking of her sensible heels echoed in the stairwell. The air was dank and smelled of despair.
Ariana shivered. She couldn't believe that their friends were being held in this prison awaiting the ritual. It seemed wrong. She and Dimitri had a plan, of course. She had to hold fast to the plan.
"Are you sure this is right?" she asked Dimitri in a soft voice.
"Of course I'm sure," he reassured her. "We have to do this. We can use the ritual to spring our trap."
"In the meantime, innocents will suffer. Our friends will suffer," she whispered.
