It didn't take long for me to climb to the top of the stairs. They were old, but well serviced with no broken steps and only a few that rattled. At the top was a metal platform with grooves to prevent people slipping and I sat there on the edge to have some food. I decided to have an early half-lunch then save the rest for the afternoon when I knew I'd be flagging.
So far I'd been able to keep my mind occupied with walking on this unfamiliar ground with all its highs and lows and sharp rocks, but now that I sat still all the worries came flooding back again. Of course, the most pressing were about Millie. Where was she? Was she alright? Was she here, on this island? How could I find her?
All too quickly the noise in my head became deafening and I quickly had to shove the rest of my sandwich in my mouth and get up and moving.
