Chapter 8 - The Best Man

A week had passed since Olivia encountered Noah in her apartment, and while they hadn't run into each other in a week now, she had managed to find out why exactly he had come back to taunt her after a whole decade.

She hadn't really paid attention to his life after she had left him, but after a couple research, she finally fell upon Noah's problems. His half Brother, Damian Grant, was out to destroy his life.

Olivia knew about Damian, the illegitimate son of the Grant family. He had been one of the few people who made life bearable for her while she had still been married to Noah. Since he hadn't been raised and spoiled as a child, Damian was a better human being than Noah, and while he had his own faults as well, he was a lot more tolerable than his half brother.

From the article she had read online, she had come to know that Damian had contested Noah's ownership of the family's company. Ten years ago, Damian had been single, but had gotten married three years later, and had a daughter of his own. Since he had an heir, the family's business could be passed on to his child and maintain Francis Grant's wishes of keeping the company in the family's bloodline.

Noah on the other hand hadn't gotten remarried, nor did he have a child that he could possibly pass the company on to if he passed away. And for that reason, he had come to get Olivia back with the claim that he was yet to sign and finalize their divorce. It was true, they were still couples according to the law, but Olivia would never imagine going back to Noah, not with everything he had done to her.

Her two years of being married to him had been the worst years of her entire life. She had spent three whole years getting over the trauma she had experienced within those two years, and if it weren't for her friends and family, she might have never recovered from what she had experienced in those two years. It didn't matter whether Noah had turned a new leaf or not, she just couldn't imagine going back to a man that had made her lose all sense of self worth.

Olivia pushed the thoughts of Noah aside, she didn't want to bother herself with his problems. She had a lot of work to do, and Noah was the least of her problems at the moment.

She focused on the screen of her laptop, screening through the monthly report that each department of the company had submitted. She needed to finish the review in a week time maximum, and she was yet to cover half of the reports submitted.

Her eyes remained fixed on her screen, and the only time she looked away was when Michael walked in with the files she had requested.

"Thank you.." Olivia whispered with a smile as she took the files away from Michael's hands.

Michael returned her smile, though a hint of concern lingered in his eyes. "You look tired, Olivia. Have you been working late again?"

It wasn't just because she was working late, she hadn't been able to sleep properly since Noah came to town. The only time she ever slept well was when Michael was with her, and he was rarely around these days. There was a lot of work to be done, and she was happy he was dedicated to his work.

"I'm fine, just a bit tired." She replied, waving off his sense of worry with a smile. "You should get some rest as well, you look tired." She returned, and Michael feigned a smile, one that quite didn't reach his eyes.

He didn't expect Olivia to notice that he wasn't at his best. He had done his best to hide it from her, yet she had managed to see through him and realize that he was stressed. And stressed he was! He had just received a call, not from any random person, but from a person that he never expected to hear from ever again, Amelia Chase.

Amelia had been Michael's childhood friend, and for a moment his fiancee. However, things didn't exactly work out between them. Amelia had traveled outside of the country to complete her education and take over her family's business. They had lost contact for over three years, but somehow she had managed to contact him just a couple of hours ago to inform him that she was coming back to the country, and if he was still down with it, she was more than willing to become his wife.

Michael had been speechless, and the clueless Amelia had taken his silence to be one of happiness or something positive. But Michael couldn't feel anything at that moment besides fear and anxiety. He had long moved on from Amelia, the person he loved and cared about now was Olivia, and while they had decided to take things slowly, he still cared deeply about her.

However, his family probably loved Amelia more, and from the look of things they were already aware of her return, because his mother had also texted him, asking him if he was still going to marry Amelia.

He hadn't replied to her yet, and he wasn't sure he would. He was yet to introduce Olivia to his family and vice versa, so they probably still thought he was single and still waiting for Amelia.

"Is everything okay, Michael?" Olivia asked, rising from her seat to comfort her man with a kiss to the lips. "You seemed lost for a moment. Are you feeling alright?"

"I'm fine, thank you for the concern." Michael replied before leaning in to return the gesture. "I'm just a bit tired, so I'll take my break now."

Olivia pulled away, allowing Michael to leave for his break. He deserved more than an hour break, but he probably wouldn't take it even if she begged him to. He was a workaholic, and she probably wouldn't be here without his help and advice. Michael was a great man, one that Olivia prayed she never loses.
