Chapter 4 - Chapter 2

6/14/2024

Alex was sitting on his couch reading over the poem over and over again. Yesterday he got a text back from Oliver saying that the forensics department found that the knife that was sent to him was not covered in human blood but instead pig's blood. He was thankful for that but still found it a bit weird that someone would send him something like that. He set the poem down and yawned, he looked at his phone and saw that it was only 3:15 pm. Today has been one hell of a day. They were able to catch the son of a bitch who broke into his neighbor's house after he tried to do it to a different person in the area. His name is Elliot Freeman not that it mattered who he was anymore. He got up from his couch and turned off his TV which was playing "The Office". He has watched this show too many times but still finds it funny to watch at times.

He grabbed his jacket and put it on. He knows that it is the middle of June but finds it comforting to have his jacket outside sometimes. He grabbed his lighter before he went outside. Once he was outside he took a deep breath and grabbed a cigarette out of his pocket. He knows that he should quit but with everything going on, it gets difficult. He used to not smoke but after what happened he started again, it felt like a release to smoke again even though he knew it was bad for him. He put out his cigarette and went back into the house. He took off his jacket and threw it on his couch. I need a nap, he thought, and walked to his bedroom, lay on his bed, and fell asleep within a few seconds.

He woke up to the sound of his phone ringing which ended soon, he slowly got up and grabbed his phone to see who was calling. What surprised him was the fact it was 8:45 pm. He looked at his notifications and saw that he had 5 missed calls, all of them coming from Oliver. He quickly called him back to see what was going on knowing that if he had called that many times it was important.

"Hey, what is going on?" he asked, hearing police sirens in the background. "You need to get over here now," Oliver said hastily and panicked. "Wait what's going on?" He asked, extremely confused. "There is no time to explain right now," Oliver said, still panicked but slower than before. "Ok, ok where are you anyways?" he asked, standing up and grabbing his badge, belt, and gun. "You know that BBQ place you and I used to visit back before what happened?" Oliver said. He was in his car now pulling out of the driveway, he also remembered that place, he used to love going there but now it brought back bad memories. "Yes I do, I'll be there in 10 minutes" he said before hanging up.

He pulled up to the restaurant and saw several police cars. He quickly got out of his car and saw Oliver walking up to him. "Hey, what is going on?" he asked. "You won't believe it, I can't even believe it myself," Oliver said panicked, "so you remember that poem and knife someone sent you". "Yes I do, why?" He asked, confused. That's when he remembered what the poem said. In two days someone will die in an alleyway. "Wait," he said, now panicked, "don't tell me". "Come see," Oliver said, walking toward the alleyway.

He was disgusted and horrified at the sight. It was a man half naked tied to the ground, his mouth covered and he had a rope of razor wire around his neck. When he was finally able to get a better look at the body, he grabbed a camera and took pictures of the body. It looked like he was also stabbed in the arms and legs several times. He put on a pair of gloves took out a pocket knife from his pocket and cut the ropes. He flipped the body over and saw that there was a smiley face carved into his back. There was a letter taped to the back of him.

One has fallen, and five remain

A warning ignored, hearts filled with disdain

The moonlight will be witness to the next one's fate

Under the night sky, the killer awaits

With each breath you take, a step closer to doom

In the darkness, there's no escape from the tomb

Listen closely, for the reaper's whispering cry

The next victim chosen, under the moonlit sky

So heed this warning, before it's too late

The killer's hand moves with cruel fate

One by one, they'll meet their end

Under the moon's watchful gaze, their souls will transcend.

Another poem but what caught his eye was the mention of how five remain and how the next murder will be under the moonlight. But it doesn't say when, why would it say that? He grabbed the poem and put it in his pocket. He also saw something written on the ground. Lazy, bully. He got up and walked back to Oliver. "Did you see anything that we didn't?" He asked. "No I didn't" he gave Oliver the camera and walked to his car. As he started his car Oliver walked over. "Pretty disturbing huh?" Oliver said. "Yeah it was," he said back. Before Oliver could say anything he drove off. What actually disturbed him was the fact that the guy was killed the same way the last victims were two years ago.
