Chapter 34 - Chapter 34: The High Official

As they moved deeper into the labyrinth, Zhang felt a mixture of anticipation and apprehension. They had been ushered into a large chamber, dimly lit but filled with the hushed murmurs of military personnel and high-ranking officials. The air was thick with tension as they awaited the arrival of a pivotal figure—a high-ranking military officer who held the fate of many in his hands.

Finally, the large doors swung open, and a tall man entered, dressed in a crisp uniform adorned with medals. General Hartman, known for his unyielding demeanor, commanded attention as he surveyed the room. The chatter faded into silence, and Zhang felt the weight of countless eyes upon him.

"Lieutenant Zhang," Hartman called out, his voice authoritative yet measured. "I hear you've encountered significant challenges. Let's discuss the situation outside."

Zhang stepped forward, flanked by his team, feeling the burden of responsibility heavy on his shoulders. "Sir, we've faced numerous threats from monstrous creatures and endured heavy losses," he began, his voice steady despite the gravity of the moment. "We've discovered that the government has effectively abandoned us. Our mission has turned into a fight for survival."

The general's brow furrowed at Zhang's words, the tension in the room palpable. "Abandoned?" he echoed, disbelief etched on his face. "We've dispatched multiple teams to assist—"

"They never made it out, sir," Zhang interrupted, a fire igniting within him. "We received no support, no reinforcements. We're fighting a battle that seems to have been forgotten by those above us."

Hartman's eyes narrowed, his expression shifting to one of concern. "What do you mean by that?"

Zhang took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts. "The situation outside is dire. The creatures are stronger than we anticipated, and many have perished trying to escape this chaos. We need a plan—a strategy to regain control of the area and protect those who remain."

General Hartman nodded slowly, absorbing the information. "Very well. Let's not waste time. What can you tell us about the radiation levels?"

Zhang hesitated, recalling the strange sensations they'd felt. "We believe the radiation is a serious threat, but it hasn't affected us as severely as we expected," he admitted, glancing at his team for support.

The general looked at Zhang intently. "And how do you explain that?"

Without hesitation, Zhang replied, "We think it might be because our exposure was limited."

The general shook his head, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "No, Lieutenant. The reason you are still standing here is more profound than that. Do you remember the outbreak that occurred years ago? The one that forced the government to develop a contingency plan?"

Zhang felt a chill run down his spine as realization dawned upon him. "Yes, I remember. They administered a new medication to us—a vaccine of sorts," he recalled, frowning at the memories of needles and unfamiliar substances.

General Hartman leaned forward, his voice low but intense. "That vaccine was part of a secret military project. It altered your DNA, granting you immunity to certain environmental hazards, including radiation. You are one of the few who were subjected to it, Lieutenant. It seems that those who survived were part of an experiment to protect us from threats like the one we now face."

Stunned silence enveloped the room as Zhang absorbed this revelation. He looked at his team, who shared expressions of disbelief and curiosity. "So, we're… immune?" he asked, struggling to comprehend the implications.

Hartman nodded gravely. "Yes, you were chosen for this initiative, and it seems that it has paid off. But it's not just you. There are others, and they're depending on us."

Zhang felt a surge of determination wash over him. "Then we need to regroup, gather those who survived, and devise a plan to fight back," he declared, his voice resolute.

General Hartman straightened, an air of authority radiating from him. "Agreed. We will mobilize forces and prepare for a counterattack. But first, I need your knowledge and experience to lead the way."

Zhang met the general's gaze, feeling the weight of the world resting on his shoulders. He nodded firmly, knowing that their battle was far from over. The reunion with his old team was bittersweet, but now they had a chance—a chance to reclaim their lives, to protect those they had lost, and to face the monstrous threat head-on.

With a renewed sense of purpose, Zhang turned to his team and the officers gathered around him. They would forge ahead together, united in their mission to restore order and seek justice for those who had fallen. The journey was just beginning, and they would not back down.
