Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: Surprise and Farewell 1

As Tang Ning savored the final bite of her birthday cake, her smile grew even wider when she noticed Gu Yan taking another bite of the delicious chocolate-strawberry confection she had shared with him. The warmth and joy of the celebration were unmistakable, with laughter and cheerful conversation filling the room

Just then, Old Master Gu cleared his throat, drawing Tang Ning's attention. "I have a surprise for you," he said, his eyes twinkling with a hint of mischief.

"Really? What is it?" Tang Ning asked, her curiosity piqued.

Old Master Gu's smile widened. "Follow me to the door."

Tang Ning hopped off her seat, her excitement bubbling over. Gu Yan, Aunt Lin, Uncle Gu, and the six Gu sisters followed closely behind, their smiles reflecting Tang Ning's enthusiasm. As they approached the door, Tang Ning's eyes widened as she heard the rumble of a vehicle pulling up outside.

Old Master Gu opened the door, and Tang Ning squinted against the bright sunlight as she saw her grandfather's car coming to a stop. Before the vehicle had even fully come to a halt, Tang Ning darted outside, her heart racing with anticipation.

As Grandpa Tang stepped out of the car, Tang Ning's excitement overflowed, and she raced toward him, her small legs moving faster than her mind could keep up. Her arms flung wide as she jumped into his embrace before he could even fully step down from the vehicle.

"Grandpa!" she squealed, squeezing him tightly.

Grandpa Tang chuckled as he wrapped his arms around her, holding her close. "There's my little girl! Happy birthday, Little Ning'er."

She buried her face in his shoulder for a moment before pulling back to grin up at him. "I missed you so much! I didn't know you were coming!"

"Well, I couldn't miss your big day, could I?" he said with a soft smile.

As they embraced, the Gu family watched from the door with warm smiles. Old Master Gu's eyes twinkled with happiness, while Gu Yan stood nearby, watching Tang Ning with his usual calm demeanor, though a hint of warmth flickered behind his eyes.

"Come, Little ning," Old Master Gu called. "We've got more celebrating to do!"

With a laugh, Tang Ning pulled away from Grandpa Tang and skipped back toward the house, her hand still holding her grandfather's. Inside, the dining table was already set for a grand birthday dinner, with dishes ranging from Tang Ning's favorite sweets to savory treats.

They all gathered around the table as the evening turned into a joyful celebration. The conversation flowed easily, filled with laughter, as Tang Ning ate with an enthusiasm only a child could muster. Her eyes sparkled with joy as she shared the birthday feast with both her grandfathers and the extended Gu family.

As the night wore on and the stars began to fill the sky, the party wound down, and Tang Ning leaned back in her chair, completely full and happy. Grandpa Tang smiled at her, his expression full of warmth.

"It's been a wonderful birthday, hasn't it?" he said, patting her head gently.

Tang Ning nodded enthusiastically. "The best one ever!"

The celebration came to a peaceful close, and Tang Ning spent the next few days in the Gu residence, enjoying her time with both sides of her family. She played in the gardens with the Gu sisters, learned more about herbs from Gu Yan, and listened to stories from both her grandfathers.

---

Five days later, as the early morning sun lit up the Gu residence, Grandpa Tang sat in the courtyard with a thoughtful expression. He had some news for Tang Ning, news that would mean a new chapter in her life.

"Tang Ning," he called, as she came running toward him from the garden.

"Yes, Grandpa?" she asked, her eyes curious.

Grandpa Tang smiled softly. "It's time for us to go back home."

Tang Ning blinked, her smile faltering just a bit. "Go back? Already?"

He nodded, his expression gentle but firm. "Yes, my dear. We've spent a wonderful time here, but it's time to return home."

Tang Ning sighed, feeling a bit torn. She loved spending time with the Gu family, but she also knew her home with Grandpa Tang was where she truly belonged.

With a nod, she agreed. "Okay, Grandpa. I'll get my things."

She stood up, and before rushing off, she beckoned to Nanny Zeng, who was nearby tending to some flowers. "Nanny Zeng, can you help me pack?"

Nanny Zeng smiled, wiping her hands clean as she approached. "Of course, Little Ning'er. Let's go get everything ready."

As Nanny Zeng gently led her back to the house, the rest of the Gu family began to gather around Grandpa Tang. Aunt Lin, ever the attentive hostess, approached with a smile.

"Leaving already, Old Tang?" she asked, her tone soft with understanding.

Grandpa Tang nodded slowly. "It's time, Lin. But we've enjoyed every moment here."

As they spoke, Tang Ning returned, her small suitcase in tow, with Nanny Zeng close behind carrying a few additional bags. Nanny Zeng approached Washington, giving him a quick nod. "Everything's packed, Old Master. I made sure we didn't leave anything behind."

"Thank you, Nanny Zeng," Grandpa Tang said gratefully, as Nanny Zeng stepped back to stand behind him.
