Mikhailis opened his eyes with a start, blinking rapidly at the soft morning light that filled his room. He sat up suddenly, his gaze darting around the chamber. The spot beside him, where Lira and Serelith had snuck in during the night, was empty. The sheets were still warm, and the faint scent of their perfumes lingered in the air.
He sighed, stretching his arms above his head, trying to shake off the remnants of sleep.
Figures they'd be gone, he thought, scratching his head. It was the day Elowen was set to return, and Lira was nothing if not careful about appearances. She probably dragged Serelith along to avoid suspicion.
"Rodion," Mikhailis muttered, rubbing his eyes, "where are they?"
