At the small guard post, villagers who could wield tools all stood on the ramparts, hundreds of them draped in rain gear, standing in silence.
It was a habitual response ingrained in every human fortress within Yinling, to stand guard on the ramparts against abnormal weather conditions. There had been too many instances in history where demons had taken advantage of the cover of bad weather to stealthily infiltrate human strongholds, causing injuries or worse, the loss of a fortress. As such, no one dared to take any chances.
Everyone's mood was somewhat heavy, because it was uncertain how much of their earlier efforts would remain after such heavy rain. No one could say for sure whether they could start working on the canals after the rainy season, and even if they could, it wouldn't be until summer at the earliest, depending on the extent of the damage to the previous work.
