Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: Strike First

A Desperate Strike – Confronting the Harbinger

Mellali and Hadjer stood on the upper platform of the crumbling Redstone Foundry, their hearts pounding as they watched the scene below. The Harbinger, the enigmatic leader of the Scales of Balance, addressed his followers with cold determination, his words echoing through the vast, decaying structure. The atmosphere was thick with tension, the weight of imminent violence hanging in the air.

They knew the odds weren't in their favor. There were at least a dozen armed revolutionaries below, and the Harbinger himself was an unknown threat. But Mellali's instinct told him that if they allowed this meeting to continue, Rivermouth would be plunged into chaos.

Hadjer met Mellali's gaze, her eyes steely with resolve. "We can't let them leave here. We strike now."

Mellali nodded. "Surprise is on our side. Let's make it count."

With a quick breath, they moved as one. Mellali's Aberrant Mind powers flared as he cast Misty Step (bonus action, 2nd-level spell), instantly teleporting from the platform to the ground level, landing silently behind the nearest group of conspirators. At the same time, Hadjer, her Bladesong already active, gracefully leapt from the platform, her movements fluid and precise as she landed amidst the group of revolutionaries, her rapier flashing in the dim light.

---

Mellali's First Move – Shattering the Mind

Before the Scales of Balance could react to their sudden appearance, Mellali wasted no time. His mind burned with psionic energy as he unleashed Psionic Blast (3rd-level spell), directing it at the center of the gathered revolutionaries. The air around him crackled with invisible force as the shockwave exploded outward, slamming into the group with brutal intensity.

(Damage: 22 force damage, revolutionaries are knocked prone, The Harbinger takes half damage and remains standing)

The wave of psychic energy tore through the room, sending five of the revolutionaries sprawling to the ground, their bodies crashing into the old machinery and stone walls. The Harbinger, though visibly shaken, remained on his feet, his eyes narrowing as he recognized Mellali's power.

The other revolutionaries scrambled to regroup, but the suddenness of Mellali's attack left them disoriented and vulnerable.

---

Hadjer's Dance of Blades – A Swift Strike

As the revolutionaries reeled from Mellali's attack, Hadjer moved like a shadow, her Bladesong enhancing her speed and agility. With a swift motion, she cast Mirror Image (2nd-level spell), creating three illusory duplicates of herself that shimmered and shifted around her, confusing her enemies.

Her rapier flashed through the air as she targeted one of the remaining standing revolutionaries, her blade humming with magical energy as she struck with Booming Blade (cantrip).

( 10 piercing + 7 thunder damage if they move)

The revolutionary gasped in pain as Hadjer's rapier sliced through his armor, the energy crackling around him with the promise of further destruction if he moved. Blood poured from the wound, and the man staggered, realizing too late that he was caught in a deadly trap.

The other revolutionaries, already struggling to recover from Mellali's psionic blast, were now facing an enemy who moved too quickly for them to track. Hadjer's illusory copies flickered as the attackers swung at her, but their strikes found nothing but empty air.

---

The Harbinger's Dark Power – A Dangerous Foe

As Mellali and Hadjer decimated the revolutionaries, the Harbinger watched with cold, calculating eyes. He stepped forward, his dark cloak billowing around him, and with a flick of his hand, the air around him shimmered with dark magic.

"You think you can stop what's already in motion?" the Harbinger hissed, his voice filled with venom. "You're nothing but puppets of a dying system!"

With a sharp gesture, the Harbinger raised his hand and cast Blight (4th-level spell) at Mellali, sending a wave of necrotic energy rushing toward him.

( Damage: 38 necrotic damage)

Mellali gasped as the necrotic energy washed over him, his skin turning pale as the life was drained from his body. He staggered, pain flooding his senses as the dark magic took hold. His mind swam with the overwhelming sensation of decay, but he forced himself to remain standing, his eyes burning with determination.

---

Mellali's Counterattack – Mental Vengeance

Despite the pain coursing through his body, Mellali knew he couldn't give the Harbinger any more time to act. Gritting his teeth, he reached deep into his well of psionic power and cast Mind Spike (3rd-level spell), targeting the Harbinger directly.

The spell tore through the air, slamming into the Harbinger's mind with brutal force, digging into his thoughts and revealing his every move to Mellali.

(Damage: 18 psychic damage)

The Harbinger staggered, clutching his head as the psychic assault hit him. His calm, commanding presence faltered as the pain of Mellali's spell ripped through his mind, leaving him vulnerable. Mellali now had a mental lock on him, able to sense his presence even if he tried to escape.

"You think you can break me?" the Harbinger growled, his voice strained. "You're already too late."

---

Hadjer's Final Strike – The Fall of the Harbinger

With the Harbinger weakened, Hadjer seized the opportunity. Her Bladesong still active, she moved with impossible speed, her rapier aimed directly at the Harbinger. As she approached, she cast Haste (3rd-level spell) on herself, doubling her speed and allowing her to strike with blinding precision.

Her rapier glowed with magical energy as she delivered a series of rapid strikes, each blow faster and more precise than the last.

( Damage: 12 piercing)

( Damage: 10 piercing)

The Harbinger barely had time to react as Hadjer's blade pierced his defenses. The first strike cut through his armor, and the second found its mark in his side. Blood poured from the wounds, and the Harbinger let out a gasp of pain, his body crumpling under the relentless assault.

He fell to his knees, his dark magic flickering and fading as his strength ebbed away.

---

The Harbinger's Last Words – The Threat Continues

As the Harbinger lay on the ground, gasping for breath, Mellali and Hadjer approached, their weapons still drawn. The remaining revolutionaries, seeing their leader defeated, scrambled to escape, but the battle was already over.

The Harbinger looked up at Mellali, blood dripping from his mouth, his once-fearsome presence now reduced to a broken shell.

"You think this is the end?" he rasped, his voice barely audible. "This city… it will burn. Whether you like it or not. The Scales of Balance… they won't stop with me. There are others. There will always be others."

Mellali knelt down beside the dying man, his eyes cold. "Where are the others?"

The Harbinger let out a weak, bitter laugh. "You'll see… soon enough."

With that, the Harbinger took his last breath, his body going still as his life faded away.

---

Aftermath – A Hollow Victory

The Redstone Foundry fell silent once more, the bodies of the revolutionaries lying scattered around the room. Mellali and Hadjer stood in the center, breathing heavily from the exertion of the fight. They had won, but the Harbinger's final words lingered in the air, filling the victory with a sense of dread.

Hadjer sheathed her rapier, her expression grim. "He wasn't lying. There are more of them. This isn't over."

Mellali nodded, still feeling the effects of the Blight spell that had nearly taken him down. "No. It's just the beginning."

As they stood in the aftermath of the battle, they knew that the threat of the Scales of Balance hadn't been fully extinguished. The Harbinger may have been defeated, but his vision of destruction lived on in the shadows of Rivermouth.

Returning to Rivermouth – The Shadow of Destruction

With the Harbinger dead, Mellali and Hadjer knew they had no time to waste. Despite their victory in the Redstone Foundry, the dying leader's words echoed in their minds: "There will always be others." The threat of the Scales of Balance was far from over, and the knowledge that more of the faction remained, ready to strike, weighed heavily on them as they made their way back through the darkened streets of Rivermouth.

The night had grown darker, the city eerily quiet, but the tension was palpable. Mellali's thoughts raced, replaying the Harbinger's final moments. His network had been far-reaching, and the remnants of the Scales of Balance were still lurking somewhere, preparing to carry out his vision of destruction.

Hadjer walked silently beside him, her expression focused and grim. "If we don't act fast, the city could be in flames before morning."

Mellali nodded. "We need to warn our allies. The hardliners and the moderates will both be in danger if the Scales strike. We have to stop them before they can do any more damage."

They pushed onward, their steps quick but silent, as they navigated through Rivermouth's shadowy streets. The city seemed to hold its breath, waiting for something to happen.

---

The Warning – A Race Against Time

By the time they reached the nobles' quarter, dawn was beginning to break, casting a pale light over the city. Mellali and Hadjer hurried to the estate of Lady Helena, one of their strongest allies in the fight for reform. If anyone could help rally the nobles and prepare them for the coming attack, it was her.

The guards at the gates, recognizing them immediately, allowed them to pass without hesitation. Inside the grand estate, Lady Helena was already awake, dressed and standing by the window, as if she had been expecting them.

"You're back," she said, turning to face them, her sharp eyes filled with concern. "What happened?"

Mellali wasted no time. "The Harbinger is dead, but the Scales of Balance are still planning to strike. They've been gathering support, and they're about to launch a coordinated attack. We don't know when or where, but it could happen any moment."

Lady Helena's face tightened, her lips pressed into a thin line. "So it's as bad as we feared. I'll send word to the other nobles immediately, but if what you're saying is true, the Scales will be targeting more than just us. They'll go after the guilds and the common folk as well."

Hadjer stepped forward, her voice steady. "We need to be ready for them. Whatever the Harbinger planned, it's already in motion. The city is about to be thrown into chaos."

---

The Attack Begins – Shadows in the City

But before they could act, a distant explosion rocked the estate, shaking the ground beneath their feet. The sound of shattering glass and crumbling stone echoed through the streets, followed by the rising wail of panicked screams. Mellali's heart raced as he exchanged a grim look with Hadjer.

"They've already started," he said, his voice tight with urgency.

Lady Helena's expression darkened. "It seems we're already too late."

Mellali moved to the window, his eyes scanning the city below. In the distance, he could see plumes of smoke rising from multiple points across Rivermouth. Fires had broken out near the guild district, and the streets were filled with terrified citizens fleeing the chaos. The Scales of Balance had launched their attack, targeting key areas of the city in a well-coordinated strike.

Hadjer gripped the hilt of her rapier. "They're hitting the city from all sides."

Mellali turned to Lady Helena. "You need to secure the nobles. Get them to safety and make sure they're ready to defend themselves. We'll handle the rest."

Lady Helena nodded, already moving to rally her guards and send messages to the other noble houses. "I'll do what I can. But be careful—the Scales have had time to plan this. They'll have more than just fire and chaos on their side."

---

Into the Fray – Defending the City

Mellali and Hadjer rushed out of the estate, heading straight for the guild district, where the fires were already spreading, and the sound of battle echoed through the narrow streets. As they arrived, they found a scene of chaos—Scales of Balance operatives were attacking guild buildings, throwing torches and setting fire to anything they could.

The guilds' own guards were trying to hold them off, but the Scales had the advantage of surprise. In the distance, more explosions echoed, each one bringing the city closer to destruction.

Mellali's heart pounded as he assessed the situation. There were too many targets, too much destruction happening all at once. They couldn't be everywhere at once, but they had to start somewhere.

Hadjer, her Bladesong already active, moved with precision and speed. "We need to take out the leaders of the attack—if we can cut off the head of the snake, the rest will fall apart."

Mellali nodded, summoning the energy of his Aberrant Mind. "Let's do this."

---

The Battle – Mellali's Power Unleashed

Mellali's psionic energy surged as he cast Synaptic Static (5th-level spell), sending a wave of mental chaos into the group of Scales operatives attacking a nearby guild hall. The spell exploded in their midst, invisible but devastating, tearing through their minds and leaving them disoriented and unable to think clearly.

(Damage: 28 psychic damage, operatives are mentally stunned and weakened)

The attackers screamed in agony, clutching their heads as the psychic energy overwhelmed them. Mellali could see their movements slow, their coordination faltering as they struggled to resist the mental assault.

He didn't stop there. Raising his hand, he cast Misty Step (bonus action) to teleport behind a group of remaining operatives, positioning himself strategically to cut off their retreat. His mind, sharpened by the adrenaline of battle, locked onto their leaders, knowing that taking them out would disrupt the rest of the attackers.

---

Hadjer's Deadly Dance – Precision and Grace

While Mellali unleashed his psionic fury, Hadjer moved through the battlefield like a ghost, her rapier flashing as she struck down one Scales operative after another. Her Bladesong allowed her to move with incredible speed, dodging strikes and weaving through the chaos with ease.

She cast Haste (3rd-level spell) on herself, doubling her speed and allowing her to deliver multiple deadly strikes in quick succession.

(Damage: 10 piercing)

(Damage: 9 piercing)

Her rapier found its mark each time, cutting down the attackers with ruthless precision. One by one, the Scales operatives fell before her, unable to keep up with her speed and skill.

---

A Leader Revealed – The Real Target

As the battle raged on, Mellali's eyes locked onto a figure standing at the edge of the chaos, giving orders to the remaining operatives. This wasn't just another foot soldier—this was one of the leaders of the attack, the mastermind behind the guild district's destruction.

The leader, sensing Mellali's gaze, turned and began to retreat into the shadows, clearly realizing that their time was running out. Mellali's heart raced—this was their chance to stop the attack and turn the tide of the battle.

"Hadjer!" Mellali called, pointing toward the fleeing leader. "We can't let them escape!"

Hadjer nodded, her eyes narrowing as she sprinted toward the target, her Bladesong carrying her swiftly across the battlefield. Mellali followed, his psionic energy ready to strike.

---

The Final Confrontation – Stopping the Attack

The leader of the Scales, cornered in a narrow alleyway, turned to face Mellali and Hadjer, a cruel smile playing across their lips. "You think you can stop the revolution? You're too late. Rivermouth will burn, and there's nothing you can do about it."

Mellali stepped forward, his eyes cold. "We'll see about that."
