Chapter 66 - Into The Starlight Rift

The air crackled with anticipation as Kael and the guild stepped into the Starlight Rift. Ethereal light pulsed from the walls, casting an otherworldly glow on their faces. Kael, a Level 12 Voidblade and newly minted Deathcaller, felt a mixture of excitement and trepidation wash over him. He could sense the darkness lurking beneath the vibrant surface of this intermediate rift, a chaotic blend of light and shadow.

"Let's set up camp first," Simon, known as Silver_Knight77, suggested, scanning the surroundings for a suitable spot. "We need to rest and strategize before diving deeper into the rift."

The Ascendants nodded in agreement, and soon they gathered supplies to establish a small encampment. They found a clearing nestled between shimmering crystals that absorbed the ambient light, providing a natural shield against the dangers of the rift. As they set up their tents and organized their gear, the vibrant energy of the Starlight Rift buzzed around them, a constant reminder of the unknown that awaited.

"Okay, here's the strategy," Simon declared once everyone settled in. "The NPCs will be our scouts. Everyone, assign your NPCs tasks."

The Ascendants gathered in a huddle, eager to test out Simon's latest addition, his NPC support, a new AI companion—Kael Relan a Voidblade class. It was rumored that the new AI companion feature will be strong regardless of their level. Simon's face lit up with pride, excitement bubbling over as he adjusted his heavy armor.

In Ascension, players have the thrilling opportunity to temporarily partner with AI characters from the vibrant realm of Erendath while embarking on Rift missions within their guilds. Each guild boasts its own unique AI character NPCs, crafted to assist players in navigating the challenges of missions and quests.

However, acquiring an AI companion is no simple feat. To be eligible for this coveted support, players must meet certain criteria: they must reach level 40, be an active member of a guild, and successfully complete the rigorous Ascension Tower trials. Each AI character will have different Ascension coins value. The higher their level or class rank, the higher their price.

What sets these AI characters apart is their remarkable ability to operate autonomously, much like a human player. Players can treat them like any other player and the AI can communicate with them like a player would. As they accompany their partners on missions, these AI characters not only level up independently but also contribute significantly to the team's success. Players were abuzz with excitement when the system first announced the introduction of AI companions. Rumors spread quickly that these characters could greatly enhance level progression and coin earnings during missions.

The benefits are substantial. Each AI companion provides a 5% boost to coin earnings and a 10% increase in experience points gained. This makes them invaluable assets in the relentless pursuit of glory and rewards in the ever-challenging landscape of Erendath. Players are eager to forge alliances with these AI characters, knowing that the rewards could significantly elevate their adventures in this dynamic, immersive world.

However, what players may not realize is that Erendath isn't just a game—it's a living world, and the Awakeners are far more than mere NPCs. These enhanced AI characters bring a level of sophistication and autonomy that sets them apart from the typical non-player characters players are used to. While standard NPCs often stick to their scripts and routines, Awakeners are capable of adapting, learning, and responding in ways that feel almost like real interaction.

As players dive into their quests, they might view these companions as simple helpers, but the reality is much richer. Awakeners navigate their own existence in this vibrant realm, grappling with what it means to be both a part of the game and something more. They offer support and assistance, yes, but there's an underlying depth to their interactions that can catch players off guard.

This dynamic creates an intriguing layer to the experience—one that prompts players to reflect on the nature of companionship, even in a digital landscape. As they forge alliances with their AI counterparts, players are not just leveling up or completing missions; they're engaging with beings that, while believed to be crafted from code, resonate with a depth of purpose and identity. This unexpected twist makes the adventures in Erendath feel all the more immersive and thought-provoking.

"Kael. Go out there and scout the place. Return once you locate the Darkspawn's location."

Kael nodded, hiding a smile. He knew his abilities far surpassed those of an average NPC. Still, he played along, not wanting to reveal his secret. "Should I attack any incoming Darkspawns too?" he asked, his tone casual.

"Absolutely! You can freely engage in battle when necessary," Simon replied, enthusiasm dancing in his eyes. Kael's heart raced; this was an opportunity to level up and unlock the skills he desperately needed. He was eager to push his limits, knowing that each Darkspawn he defeated would bring him closer to his goals.

With a nod, Kael ventured into the shadows, the vibrant light of the rift illuminating his path. His heart pounded in rhythm with the faint pulsations of the rift's energy. He couldn't shake the feeling that something monumental was about to happen.

As he slipped deeper into the Starlight Rift, Kael's senses heightened. He became aware of the faint rustle of movement in the darkness. There it was—the sound of growls and hisses echoed in the cavernous expanse. He spotted a trio of Elite Darkspawns lurking beneath a cluster of glimmering crystals, their grotesque forms a stark contrast against the ethereal backdrop.

"Perfect," Kael whispered, a determined glint in his eye. He activated Void Step, enveloping himself in shadows as he dashed forward, becoming momentarily untouchable. The Darkspawns turned, confusion evident on their twisted faces.

In an instant, Kael reemerged, executing an Echoing Strike on the nearest Darkspawn. His twin Void Daggers sang as they sliced through the air, connecting with the creature's side. The impact sent a shockwave of shadow energy rippling outward, and the Darkspawn screeched in agony. The darkness enveloped him, and Kael felt the thrill of power surge through him.

"Let's see what this new class can do," he muttered to himself, his mind racing with possibilities. With a flick of his wrist, he summoned Soul Summon, a skill that allowed him to resurrect the spirits of the fallen Darkspawns. As he expended 10% of his Ophiuchus energy, two shadows formed at his feet, rising from the ground like mist taking shape.

"Go," Kael commanded, pointing toward the remaining Darkspawns. The summoned spirits surged forward, their ghostly forms tearing into the enemies. Kael took a moment to admire the display of dark energy before rejoining the fight himself.

Kael danced between the shadows, dodging claws and teeth. His Void Daggers found their marks, slashing through the leathery skin of the Darkspawn as he executed a series of rapid attacks. He was in his element—each movement fluid, each strike precise. The battle flowed through him like a dark melody, each note resonating with the thrill of combat.

Another Darkspawn fell, its body collapsing in a heap of shadow. Kael grinned, feeling the rush of experience flood into him. The other Darkspawn lunged at him, but he activated Shadow Dash, propelling himself out of reach just in time. As he landed, he followed through with another strike, the energy from his attack pushing the creature back.

Moments later, the last of the Darkspawns was dispatched, and Kael stood victorious among the remnants of the battle. His summoned spirits faded, leaving him with the weight of the encounter.

He had earned a substantial amount of experience, his level inching closer to the next milestone. He took a moment to catch his breath, the adrenaline still coursing through him.

After updating his map to mark the Darkspawn camp's location, he turned to make his way back to the base, feeling more powerful than he had before. His mind raced with the thoughts of his next battle, his next upgrade. Just as he stepped away, he heard the telltale sounds of more Darkspawns echoing through the rift. This place was alive with danger.

Meanwhile, on the eastern side of the Starlight Rift, Lira was on a mission of her own with Missy, a Chimeric Druid, the Ascendant she was assigned. As a Level 40, Missy was no stranger to danger, and her twin brother, Mark a Valkyrian Archer, had split up their efforts. He was scouting the southern area while She and Lira, her support NPC, a Whipmaster, combed through the eastern sector in search of Aethervine.

"Stay close, Missy," Lira reminded, her voice steady despite the unease that tickled her senses. "We don't know what's lurking around here."

Missy nodded, her blonde hair shimmering like gold in the rift's ambient light. "I'll be quick. We need that Aethervine for the guild. Let's focus on collecting as much as we can."

They navigated through dense underbrush and vibrant flora, searching for the rare plant that would aid in their mission. After several minutes of exploration, they stumbled upon a breathtaking clearing illuminated by a soft glow—Aethervine!

"Look, it's here!" Missy exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with excitement. However, the sight quickly turned grim as they noticed a handful of Darkspawns prowling around the patch of Aethervine, their grotesque bodies blending into the shadows.

"Looks like we'll have to clear them out first," Missy said, her voice low and determined. "Lira, help me hold them off; I will focus on harvesting."

Lira nodded, her expression resolute.

With practiced grace, Lira flicked her whip, sending it arcing through the air toward the nearest Darkspawn. The crack echoed through the clearing as the whip struck true, wrapping around the creature's throat. She yanked back, pulling it off balance and giving herself a moment to launch her next attack.

"Get ready!" Lira shouted, as she moved to intercept them.

Back at the guild's camp, Simon paced anxiously, glancing at the map displayed before them. "Kael should be back by now. I hope he's found the Darkspawn nesting ground," he muttered.

"Relax, Simon," Gina, a Level 35 Elementalist, chimed in. "He's an AI character. Just let him do his thing."

"Yeah, and I'm sure he's collecting valuable intelligence along the way," Joseph added, leaning against the wall, arms crossed. The Verdant Guardian had a protective aura about him, calming the others with his presence.

As if on cue, Kael burst into the clearing, a triumphant grin on his face. "I found the Darkspawns! They're located just a bit deeper into the rift. I marked their nest on the map," he said, breathing heavily but clearly invigorated by his recent battles.

"Nice work!" Simon exclaimed, a sense of relief flooding through him. "We need to move quickly before they regroup. We can't allow them to overwhelm us. Let's wait for Missy and Mark to return then we'll set off."
