Chapter 10 - The Cliff’s Edge Clash

As I crouched on the sturdy branch, my fingers gripping tightly and sweat beading on my forehead, the air hummed with an electric charge. Below me, the massive creature prowled through the jungle with a silent grace that belied its size. I stayed frozen, barely daring to breathe, but it was too late. The beast's head snapped up, its fiery red eyes glaring directly at me, and a roar ripped through the stillness of the forest.

In a split second, its monstrous form lunged towards me with inhuman speed, a blur of darkness surging through the air. My heart hammered against my ribcage as I sprang to another branch, barely escaping the searing claws that tore through the tree trunk where I had been moments before. The wood splintered and exploded, the entire tree toppling with a thunderous crash that shook the very earth beneath me.

My feet hit the ground in a battle stance, sword gripped tightly in my hand. I chanted a speed enchantment, and the surge of mana coursed through my body, making me feel invincible. I darted between trees, my eyes locked on the looming beast before me. As I closed in on its blind spot, my heart raced with excitement and fear. With all my might, I swung my sword down at its thick neck, but it barely made a scratch against its tough hide.

"What the hell?!" I cursed under my breath. My sword—the same one I'd been swinging for years—was no match for this thing's skin. It was like trying to cut through solid stone.

The creature's lightning-fast turn catches me off guard. In an instant, its massive paw strikes out with a ferocity that sends me tumbling across the dirt like a rag doll. The ground shudders and cracks beneath the sheer force of its swipe, leaving behind a deep crater where I had just stood. The air around us vibrates with pressure, every movement of the creature emanating deadly power. With one swift hit, I know I'll be nothing more than a smear on the ground.

The beast let out a low, menacing growl, its red eyes gleaming with a savage intelligence. It wasn't just an animal—it was hunting me, toying with me.

I scrambled to my feet, breathing hard. My mind raced. There was no time for me to think, only act. I darted toward a fallen log, ducking as the creature's claws sliced the air above me. The wind from the swing ruffled my hair. It was too fast—too damn fast for something its size.

Think, Lucan, think! The voice in my head urged me as I frantically evaded the bear's attacks. My mind raced, desperately trying to come up with a plan to defeat this massive creature. But every move I made felt like a desperate gamble, and the bear seemed to anticipate each one. Adrenaline coursed through my body, but so did fear and doubt. Could I really take down this beast on my own?

My sword was useless, but I couldn't let this thing win. "Come on, think!" I growled, eyes darting for a weakness. If I didn't find one soon, I'd be done for.

My heart raced as the ferocious roar of a bear echoed through the dense forest, causing birds to scatter and leaves to tremble. Adrenaline flooded my veins as I tried to come up with a plan. My eyes scanned the area, searching for any solution. Then, a vague memory from my childhood at earth resurfaced. They say if you ever encounter a bear, the trick is to run downhill. Something about its massive size and speed tripping it up. It seemed like a long shot, but it was all I had in that moment.

A steep hill flashed through my mind, could I use it? There was no time to hesitate. The beast charged at me once more, its sharp claws cutting through the air with a frightening intensity. I leaped into the air, barely evading its attack. As I landed and felt my heart racing, a decision formed in my mind.

"Okay, let's see if this myth holds," I muttered, summoning flame magic to my fingertips. I hurled it at the bear—not to hurt it, just to taunt it. The fire barely singed its fur, leaving the creature unfazed. But the flames caught its attention, and for a split second, I swear it looked like it was…smiling.

I smirked back and, in a moment of sheer idiocy, flipped the beast off with my middle finger. Its confusion was brief. Its expression twisted from puzzlement to pure fury. The next roar it let out could've split the earth. The ground trembled beneath me as it went berserk, charging with terrifying speed.

"Perfect," I whispered under my breath, already sprinting. The beast thundered behind me, closing the distance. I dodged left, then right, barely avoiding its claws as it shredded trees like they were paper. My heart raced, the sound of its breath hot on my heels. But this was part of the plan.

"Come on, follow me… just a little more," I whispered between ragged breaths. The pounding of its steps grew louder, the beast unrelenting in its pursuit. My lungs burned, but I kept running, weaving between trees, ducking beneath low-hanging branches.

And then I saw it. The hill. Steep and unforgiving, just as I remembered.

I grinned.

As the beast thundered closer, my mind snapped into focus. I summoned ice and water magic, weaving them together beneath my feet. The ground beneath me turned slick with frost, the mud mixing with a layer of slippery ice. The trail I left behind glistened in the faint light, a perfect trap.

I picked up the pace, my feet barely touching the ground as I sprinted ahead, the bear closing in with each step. Its snarls grew louder, furious, but I kept my gaze locked on the cliff edge just ahead.

"Come on, you big brute, just a little closer," I muttered, my heart hammering in my chest.

The bear's claws dug into the earth as it charged, eyes fixed on me, full of rage. I slowed down, pretending to falter just by the edge of the hill, letting it think it had me cornered. The ground was slick, and the bear couldn't have noticed it yet, too blinded by bloodlust.

My heart raced as the creature barreled towards me, its massive form filling my vision with terror. With a surge of adrenaline, I waited until the very last possible second before unleashing a magic-boosted jump, propelling myself into the air and soaring towards the safety of the trees just in time to escape its razor-sharp claws. The wind whipped past me as I flew, my pulse pounding in my ears as I fought to stay one step ahead of the relentless predator below.

The bear's claws swiped through the air where I had been just moments before, but instead of hitting me, it landed on the icy, treacherous slope. I watched, grinning, as the beast's front paws skidded uncontrollably. Its momentum was too strong, and it tried desperately to dig its claws into the ground for balance.

But I was two steps ahead. The water and ice magic made the hillside a treacherous slide, and the bear had no chance. Its huge body tumbled down the slick slope, roaring in frustration as it clawed at the ground.

I stood on the branch of a tree, watching it tumble helplessly. When it finally reached the cliff's edge, there was nothing left for it to grab onto. It locked eyes with me, a look of pure fury and menace as it plummeted down the cliffside.

I waved mockingly, flashing the biggest grin. "Enjoy the trip, big guy. Safe flight!"

The last thing I saw was its hulking form disappearing into the fog below.
