Vance laughed because Benjamin believed what he said. "You'll never be better than Adeline. Despite her flaws, she's the child I'm most proud of. You could learn a lot from your sister and I want you to. You need to try to do something without her."
Benjamin had an urge to laugh at his father's confession. "All this time I was walking around thinking you picked me because I proved myself to you but I was just Adeline's replacement because you couldn't control her. What has she done that I can't?"
