"All this time, you pushed me forward because you couldn't control Adeline? I thought you had more faith in me," Benjamin said, having to sit as this hit him hard. "I've done everything you asked me to do and succeeded. I'm just as good as Adeline if not better."
Vance laughed because Benjamin believed what he said. "You'll never be better than Adeline. Despite her flaws, she's the child I'm most proud of. You could learn a lot from your sister and I want you to. You need to try to do something without her."
Benjamin had an urge to laugh at his father's confession. "All this time I was walking around thinking you picked me because I proved myself to you but I was just Adeline's replacement because you couldn't control her. What has she done that I can't?"
