Chapter 35 - Subterfuge and War Preparedness

Year 1565, March, Murshidabad, Bengal Sultanate

In a forest near a village few men has gathered and was discussing among themselves. One of the men said "We will be receiving the weapons here today it will include matchlock musket, swords, shields and other melee weapons and we will use them to fight against the atrocities and oppression of the slamic official of Bengal sultanate". This men were part of indu rebel faction who have taken up arms to fight against the oppression of the slamic officials of the Bengal sultanate who oppresses the indu people in the name of religion and authority. As these men discuss their plans, they heard the sound of the approaching horse hooves and as they look in the distance they could see multiple carts are approaching towards them. Once the cart reached them they started offloading the weapons to be distributed among the rebels for the rebellion against the Bengal sultanate. One of the men saw that all the weapons has Mughals symbol upon them which surprised him and on asking their leader about the same, he said that the weapons where purchased by bribing the Mughal officials. The same scene can be seen all over the Bengal sultanate where multiple rebel faction were getting Mughals marked weapons from unknown source to be used for armed rebellion within the Bengal sultanate.

A few days later

One such weapons delivery was travelling on the road within the Bengal sultanate towards a destined rebel base unfortunately this weapons were intercepted by the Bengal sultanate officials, though the rebels fought bravely to protect the weapons but due to overwhelming numbers of the sultanate soldiers they were ultimately killed and the weapons were captured. The officials seeing the Mughals inscription on the weapons immediately dispatched runners to report the new development to the sultans royal court. While this was happening a man was watching the same from the distance while keeping himself hidden from the Bengal soldiers eyes. He had a subtle smile on his face as he spoke the word to himself "mission accomplished by now they should have found the letter" as an afterthought. This man was none other then an agent of the third eye organization.

A week later, Gaur Capital city, Bengal sultanate

In private chamber of the sultan, the sultan Shiraj-ud-Daulah can be seen having a furious discussion with the wazir (prime minster) of the sultanate. There was a letter kept infront of him, this letter was same one that has been planted by third eye agents in the weapons caravan captured by the sultanate soldiers. The sultan looking at his wazir and said "How did you miss such a traitor among our ranks, to think Duke Mir Jaffer is plotting with the Mughals to usurp my throne, what the hell were you doing". The wazir flustered said "Your majesty I am extremely sorry that we missed such a grave threat to the sultanate but Duke Mir Jaffer never did anything to make us suspicious of him". Hearing this the sultan got even more furious and said "Should I need to execute you wazir for your incompetence, do you know that he is massing soldier in the east of his estate we would not have even known if I had not received this letter and sent spies to investigate". The wazir no longer able to hid his incompetence all he could do is bow his head with acquiescence.

As the news spread of one of the most decorated general and Noble, Duke Mir Jaffer's betrayal within the Bengal sultanate, the sultan ordered to mobilize the royal army to bring the traitor general in shackles so that he can be hanged for treason. Thus started the civil war within the Bengal sultanate between the Royalist faction and the Duke faction.

3 months later, Northern command Headquarter, Khurda Kingdom

The prince was having a discussion with the third eye head Suryasen and as he read the reports on the Bengal sultanate he asked a question to Suryasen "Elder do you know what is the best lie". Listening to the question Suryasen simply nodded his head in negative, so the prince answered his own question by saying "The best lie is one where we mix it with truth". Hearing this Suryasen immediately understood what the prince was hinting at. He was talking about pinning the traitor mark on Mir jaffer which is in a way true as he was already colluding with the Mughals to organize a coup to usurp the Bengal sultanate throne. The prince and Suryasen simply fast forwarded it and used it to their advantage by providing a forged letter and Mughal inscription weapons to the indu rebels and making sure one of such consignment fall into the hand of the sultanate army along with the letter so that it raises suspicion in the mind of the sultan and he investigate duke Mir jaffer which led to the current situation of ongoing civil war between the duke faction and the royal faction.Once he read the report of successful execution of his plan to cause dissent and strife within the Bengal sultanate he looked at Suryasen and instructed him to continue infiltrating both the royal faction and duke faction and leak each faction information to other so that the civil war prolongs thereby whittling away the military strength of the Bengal sultanate and made it a easy prey for him to conquer. The prince also commanded Suryasen to infiltrate and place agents in places to blow up weapon caches and disrupt military supply lines using the rebels when he start the war in earnest.

As Suryasen exited the room both the major general Virendra of his private company army and major general Aadhavan in command of the northern army of close to 25000 strong entered the office. The prince looked at general Aadhavan and asked "Is the army equipped with the missiles, cannons, musket and pikes and are they adequately trained with it". As the general Aadhavan answered in positive the prince addressed both the general and ordered to get ready as within 3 months or so, they will go to full-fledged invasion of the Bengal sultanate.

Few days later

The chief weapon officer Hariharan has traveled from Badrak to meet the prince on orders from him. As Hariharan entered the prince office and greeted the prince, he signaled him to take a sit as he was going to discuss an improvement of the current musket. As prince Viraja gave a document which includes the design and details of the percussion cap concept which he wants to apply to the musket . The prince continued with the brief overview of the percussion cap whose main advantage is a type of single-use percussion ignition device for muzzle loader firearm locks enabling them to fire reliably in any weather condition. It includes a caplock mechanism or percussion lock system which used percussion caps struck by the hammer to set off the gunpowder charge in rifles and cap and ball firearms, and another name for such a mechanism is also called percussion gun and one with long gun is called percussion rifle. As for the percussion cap itself is small cylinder of copper or brass with one closed end. Inside the closed end is a small amount of a shock-sensitive explosive material such as mercuric fulminate.

Hearing the unknown term like mercuric fulminate, Hariharan frowned and was about to ask the prince, but the prince detecting his confusion beforehand continued that mercuric fulminate is a primary explosive and is highly sensitive to friction, heat and shock and will be used as a trigger for the percussion caps. As for the preparation of mercuric fulminate it is done by dissolving mercury in nitric acid and adding ethanol to the solution. Once again Hariharan frowned at the unknown substance called ethanol, though he is familiar with the substance called mercury and nitric acid which the alchemist employed by the company can easily create but he has no idea about ethanol. So on asking the prince for the same the prince replied that ethanol is made by fermenting the sugar in the starches of grains such as corn, sorghum, and barley, and the sugar in sugar cane and sugar beets.

Finally the prince said that all the details with drawing are given in the document handed to him. He wants Hariharan to start working on manufacturing of the same and would expect at least enough percussion rifles to equip a part of his private company army to be produced within next 3 months as he wants to use them for the coming war with Bengal sultanate. Having gotten his orders from the prince he excused himself from the prince presence and immediately returned to Badrak branch company to start working on the new rifles design with excitement on his face.
