Rachel and the others walked along a path directly below one of the covered bridges in the abyss. The terrain of the abyss was highly varied. In this area the ground was rocky and there were many hills sloping both gently and steeply.
They had already traversed three fairly large hills in their trek. Rachel chose to walk to the Sphinx to allow the highly intelligent creatures an opportunity to sense them and possibly try to understand their motives or intentions.
