Chapter 22 - The Trial of Spirits

At the heart of the forest, seated the Spirit Queen on a throne woven from living vines and adorned with radiant crystals. Her presence was otherworldly, her aura commanding the very air to still. Violet eyes, deep as galaxies, bore the weight of ages, and her silver hair shimmered like liquid starlight, swaying gently as if the universe bowed to her. She was both ethereal and terrifying, a being of immense power and grace.

As they approached, faint flickers of light circled her throne—spirits. They floated like fireflies, their forms barely tangible, yet unmistakably alive. At the sight of Eli and his companions, the spirits recoiled, retreating into the dense shadows of the forest, their glowing forms fading from view.

Eli glanced at the empty space they left behind, scratching his head. "Was it something I said? Or is it my reputation preceding me again?"

Luna rolled her eyes, her lips curving into a smirk. "Maybe it's your cologne. Or your way with words—it's a real crowd-pleaser."

"Thanks for the vote of confidence," Eli muttered, his tone dripping with sarcasm.

Celestina's gaze lingered on the group, and for a moment, a ghost of a smile flickered across her lips. But when she spoke, her voice carried the weight of an ancient lament. "They do not fear you, Cain's descendant. They fear what you represent."

Eli tilted his head, curiosity tinged with unease. "And what exactly do I represent? Other than bad luck?"

The Queen stood, her movements fluid yet purposeful, her every step reverberating through the earth as if the forest itself acknowledged her presence. "You represent change, for better or worse. Long have the spirits lived in hiding, scarred by betrayal and hunted to near extinction. Your arrival stirs both hope and fear in their hearts."

Her voice softened, laced with sorrow, as she continued. "Long ago, the spirits were guardians of balance, protectors of humanity. We thrived in harmony with your kind, offering wisdom and strength. But then Cain vanished, and with his absence came chaos. Deathreign sought to conquer the spirit world, enslaving and slaughtering my kin. Their malice left the spirits broken, scattered, and vulnerable."

Her violet eyes darkened as a shadow seemed to pass over her. "I tried to resist, but even I was no match for their cruelty. The forest you see now is all that remains—a sanctuary sealed by my magic to protect the last of our kind. But this refuge is a cage. My spirits hide, not out of cowardice, but from the memory of what has been lost."

Luna's expression softened, her usual sharpness replaced by genuine empathy. "That's… awful. You've been protecting them all this time?"

Celestina nodded, her voice carrying both pride and pain. "I have done what I could, but my power alone is not enough. The balance is broken, and the world suffers for it."

Eli's usual sarcasm faded as he absorbed her words. "So… what do I do? How am I supposed to fix this?"

"You must summon a spirit," Celestina said, her tone resolute. "Form a bond with one who will guide and aid you in restoring balance. This is not a task to be taken lightly, Cain's descendant. The spirits have been betrayed before—they will not trust easily."

Sebastian crossed his arms, his tone skeptical. "And if he fails?"

Celestina's gaze turned cold, her regal demeanor sharpening like a blade. "If he fails, the spirits will retreat into the shadows forever. This is your only chance."

Eli swallowed hard, his usual bravado faltering. "No pressure, then."

Luna nudged him with a teasing grin. "Come on, Eli. It's just a life-or-death contract with a mystical spirit. You've faced worse."

"Thanks, Luna. Your unwavering support is really inspiring," he shot back, though a small smile tugged at his lips.

Celestina raised her arms, her silver hair billowing as an unseen wind swirled around her. The clearing came alive with light, ancient runes igniting in a circle around her throne. The air grew heavy with energy, the forest humming with anticipation.

"Step forward, Cain's descendant," Celestina commanded. "Prove your worth, and call to the spirits. Only one will answer. Only one will stand by your side."

Eli hesitated, glancing at Luna and Sebastian. Luna gave him a reassuring nod, her gaze uncharacteristically soft. "You've got this, Eli."

"Yeah, sure. No big deal," he muttered, stepping into the circle of glowing runes. The air turned icy, whispers echoing from the shadows as the spirits observed him.

Clearing his throat, Eli raised his voice. "Uh… spirits? Hi. I'm Eli, apparently the descendant of Cain. Look, I don't have a grand speech or anything, but I could really use some help here. So, if one of you could step up, that'd be great."

Luna groaned audibly. "Smooth, Eli. Really motivational."

The whispers grew louder, the air crackling with energy. A faint glow appeared before him, growing brighter until a single spirit emerged—a small, shimmering figure with drowsy eyes and a pair of wings unlike anything Eli had ever seen. One wing glimmered in radiant gold, the other in shadowy black, creating a striking contrast.

Celestina's breath hitched, her eyes widening in astonishment. "Impossible…" she murmured, her voice trembling. "That spirit… it has returned."

Eli blinked at the spirit, who hovered before him with a mix of curiosity and caution. "Okay," he said slowly, "I think we're off to a good start?"

The spirit tilted its head, its sleepy gaze locking onto Eli's. For the first time, the whispers around them fell silent, the forest holding its breath as the ritual reached its climax.
