Chapter 78 - Runaways

The next few days passed in a frenzied blur of activity and anxiety. We met with witnesses, collected testimonies, and forged what felt like an impenetrable wall of support for Sera. But deep down, I could sense a growing tension, a dark cloud looming over us that we couldn't quite shake.

It was late afternoon when Elara summoned me to a secluded alcove in the palace gardens, the whispers of the wind mirroring my unease. The usual warmth of the sun was overshadowed by the urgency of her expression as I approached.

"Gwen," she began, her voice low and grave, "we need to talk. There's something you need to know."

I felt my heart sink. "What is it?"

"Elara glanced around, ensuring we were alone. "I just received word that some of our allies are beginning to backtrack. They're afraid of the council's retribution."

My stomach twisted. "What do you mean? They're backing out?"

"Yes," she confirmed, her eyes darting. "I overheard a few of them discussing how they don't want to get involved any further. They think siding with Sera will put their own lives at risk. Some even mentioned that it would be safer to keep their heads down and remain loyal to the council."

"No!" I exclaimed, disbelief washing over me. "After everything we've built together, they can't just turn their backs on us now! We need them!"

"I know," Elara said, her voice heavy with sorrow. "But the council is ruthless. They've made it clear that anyone who speaks against them will face severe consequences. Some of our allies are willing to save themselves at any cost."

The reality of her words hit me like a punch to the gut. I fought to keep my composure, but the feeling of betrayal threatened to swallow me whole. "What does this mean for Sera?"

"We have to act quickly. If they're already backing out, it won't be long before the council gets wind of our plans. They could come for her at any moment."

A knot formed in my throat. "But we can't just leave her here! We need to hide her."

Elara's gaze hardened. "Exactly. We need to find a place where she can stay until things cool down. The further we can get from the council's reach, the better."

Panic surged through me. "What about you? What about us?"

"I'll do what I can to distract them, to buy you some time. But you need to go now. Take Sera and find a safe place." She paused, her expression softening. "Promise me you'll protect her."

"I promise," I whispered, the weight of her words sinking in.

---

I raced back to my room, my heart pounding with urgency. I found Sera sitting on the edge of the bed, her eyes flickering with uncertainty. "Gwen? What's wrong?"

I rushed to her side, taking her hands in mine. "We have to go. We're not safe here anymore."

"What do you mean?" Her voice trembled, fear creeping into her expression. "What's happening?"

"Some of our allies are turning against us. They're afraid, and they might betray us to the council. We can't risk staying here; we have to hide until we figure this out."

Sera's face paled, and her eyes widened with disbelief. "But… where will we go? What if they find us?"

"We'll find somewhere safe," I reassured her, forcing a smile despite the storm of emotions raging inside me. "Just trust me. We have to move quickly."

As I hurried to gather a few essentials—a small bag with clothes, food, and the locket I'd given her for her birthday—I felt a swell of determination. We wouldn't be defeated so easily.

"Do you think they'll come for us right away?" Sera asked, her voice barely above a whisper as she watched me pack.

"I don't know," I admitted, swallowing hard. "But we can't take any chances."

Once I had everything, I turned to Sera, my heart racing. "Are you ready?"

She took a deep breath, steadying herself. "As ready as I'll ever be."

I nodded and led her out of the room, glancing down the corridor to ensure no one was watching. We moved quickly, slipping through the palace halls like shadows, trying to avoid the eyes of those who might still be loyal to the council.

Outside, the sun dipped low in the sky, casting long shadows across the courtyard. I scanned the area, looking for a way out. "There's a path through the gardens that leads to the outskirts of the city," I whispered, pointing toward the dense foliage.

We made our way to the gardens, my heart racing with every step. As we moved deeper into the greenery, I could hear the faint rustling of leaves behind us, as if the shadows themselves were chasing us.

"Gwen, do you think they know?" Sera asked, fear lacing her voice.

"I don't know," I replied, glancing back nervously. "But we have to keep moving."

As we reached the edge of the garden, I noticed a small, worn path leading into the woods. "This way," I urged, guiding her forward.

The forest loomed ahead, a labyrinth of trees and shadows. I felt a mix of dread and hope as we stepped into the cover of the trees, the canopy above us blocking out the fading light. The further we ventured into the woods, the more the weight of the council's threat lifted from my shoulders.

But the relief was short-lived. As we walked deeper into the thicket, a loud snap echoed through the air, making us both freeze in our tracks. I turned to Sera, her eyes wide with panic.

"Did you hear that?" she whispered.

Before I could respond, a voice rang out from behind us, cold and commanding. "Stop right there!"

We spun around to find a group of guards emerging from the trees, their armor glinting ominously in the dwindling light. My heart sank as I recognized the leader—Commander Oren, a loyalist to the council and a man known for his ruthless pursuit of those deemed threats.

"Gwen!" Sera cried, her voice trembling as she clutched my arm.

"Run!" I shouted, instinct taking over. I yanked her hand and pulled her deeper into the forest, sprinting through the underbrush, my heart pounding in my chest.

Branches whipped against my skin as we pushed through the trees, adrenaline fueling my every step. Behind us, I could hear the guards shouting, the crunching of leaves and the rustle of branches as they pursued us.

"Gwen, they're right behind us!" Sera shouted, panic lacing her voice.

"Just keep running!" I urged, my breath coming in ragged gasps. "We have to find a place to hide!"

Ahead, I spotted a thick grove of trees, their trunks forming a natural barrier. "Over there!" I yelled, directing Sera toward the cover of the trees.

We dove into the grove, pressing ourselves against the rough bark, hearts racing as we listened to the guards crash through the underbrush, the sound drawing closer.

"Where are they?" Commander Oren's voice cut through the trees, sharp and demanding. "They couldn't have gone far!"

I held my breath, squeezing Sera's hand tightly as we crouched low, hoping against hope that they wouldn't find us.

"They must be nearby," one of the guards replied, his voice laced with frustration. "Split up and search the area!"

As the guards began to fan out, my heart sank. We were trapped, our only chance at safety slipping away. I looked at Sera, her eyes wide with fear, and I knew we had to think fast.

"Follow my lead," I whispered, gathering my thoughts. "When they pass us, we make a run for it, okay?"

She nodded, her grip tightening on my hand as we braced ourselves.

We held our breath as the guards searched the grove, their voices growing fainter as they moved further away. But with each passing moment, my anxiety grew. How long before they realized we weren't there?

Just as I began to lose hope, the sounds of their footsteps faded into the distance. I dared to glance toward the edge of the grove, my heart racing as I realized we might have a chance.

"Now!" I whispered urgently, pulling Sera close as we slipped out of our hiding spot and into the thicker part of the forest.

We ran as quietly as we could, darting between trees and ducking under low branches. My heart pounded in my chest, the fear of being caught propelling us forward.

"We have to find somewhere to hide until we can regroup," I panted, glancing around for any sign of safety. "There's a cabin near the old mill—if we can get there, we can lay low until we figure out our next move."

"Will they follow us there?" Sera asked, her voice shaky.

"I don't know," I admitted, pushing aside my own fear. "But it's the best chance we have."

As we hurried through the forest, the weight of betrayal loomed over us, but I clung to the flicker of hope deep within. Sera was depending on me, and I wouldn't let her down. Together, we would face whatever came next, even if it meant stepping into the shadows to find safety.
