Argider shifted uncomfortably on the stone bench, her gaze darting nervously to the tall hedges that formed a secluded alcove around them. The occasional sound of rustling leaves and distant footsteps of patrolling guards only heightened her unease.
"Relax," Callista purred, her voice soft and honeyed, yet laced with mischief. She leaned in, her dark eyes gleaming like polished obsidian. "You look like you've seen a ghost. Or worse… like you're afraid of me."
"I-I'm not afraid of you!" Argider stammered, crossing her arms in a futile attempt to appear composed.
"Oh?" Callista arched a delicate brow, leaning closer until their faces were mere inches apart. "Then why are you trembling, my dear emperor?" Her lips curved into a slow, predatory smile as her fingers trailed up Argider's arm, the light touch sending shivers down her spine.
