I tried to brush off the feeling of unease, telling myself I was just being paranoid. But the seed of doubt had been planted, and it was growing.
Over the next few days, I noticed John's behavior becoming more and more distant. He was working late nights, and when I asked him about it, he just shrugged it off, saying he was busy with work.
I started to feel like I was losing him, like he was slipping away from me. And then, I saw a text message on his phone. A message from Emily, asking him to meet up.
My heart raced as I felt a wave of anger and betrayal wash over me. Who was this woman, and what was she doing with my husband?
I confronted John, trying to keep my cool. "Who is Emily, really?" I demanded.
John sighed, rubbing his temples. "She's just a colleague, okay? We're working on a project together. That's all."
But I knew what I saw. I saw the way he looked at her, the way he smiled when she texted him.
"I don't believe you," I said, my voice shaking.
John's expression changed, and for a moment, I saw a flash of guilt. But then, it was gone, replaced by his usual calm demeanor.
"Trust me," he said. "There's nothing going on."
But I didn't trust him. Not anymore.
