Chereads / The Demons I Face And Her Love That Gives Me Strength / Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Bloodstock Beat

Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Bloodstock Beat

As we approached the entrance of the haunted house, a chill ran down my spine, despite the warmth of the festival atmosphere. The creepy facade loomed before us, its twisted wooden beams resembling skeletal fingers reaching for the sky. A giant, glowing spider web stretched across the front gate, casting an eerie glow over the crowd.

"Are you ready for this, Onii-chan?" Natsumi whispered, her breath tickling my ear.

"Born ready," I replied, grinning.

Ai, standing on my other side, shot me a sly glance. "Alright, let's review the rules. Whoever gets the most clingy wins."

Natsumi's eyes sparkled with excitement. "I'm going to win for sure!"

Mayuri, trailing behind us, muttered under her breath, "I'm only doing this because I lost that stupid bet..." Her voice trailed off, and I caught a glimpse of vulnerability behind her tough exterior.

"Hey, Mayuri, what was the bet again?" I asked, curiosity getting the better of me.

Mayuri's face turned bright red. "I... I bet Ai that I could sell more festival tickets than her. But she somehow managed to convince the entire soccer team to buy from her..."

Ai chuckled. "Hey, all's fair in love and ticket sales."

Mayuri's eyes narrowed. "You're going down, Ai."

Natsumi giggled. "This is going to be fun!"

As we stood there, the sounds and smells of the festival wafted around us. The smell of grilled meats and cotton candy filled the air, mingling with the screams and laughter from the haunted house.

"Alright, let's get this over with," Mayuri said, steeling herself.

Ai grinned mischievously. "No backing out now, Mayuri."

We shared a laugh, and then Ai's expression turned serious. "Remember, whoever gets the most clingy wins. No holding back."

Natsumi nodded enthusiastically. "I'm going to cling to Onii-chan so tight!"

I chuckled, feeling a thrill of excitement. "Bring it on."

Mayuri took a deep breath, her tough exterior cracking for a moment. "I... I don't like haunted houses..." she whispered.

Ai's expression softened. "Hey, we're in this together, Mayuri."

I offered Mayuri a reassuring smile. "We'll protect you."

Mayuri's mask slipped back into place. "I don't need protection."

Just then, Natsumi exclaimed, "Ai-Chan, that's cheating! You're not allowed to cling to Onii-chan now."

Ai just made a face.

Natsumi clung to me tighter. "How's that?" she asked with pride.

"You little cheat, I am gonna win this!" Ai replied angrily.

"Umm, do I have a say in this?" I asked, feeling overwhelmed.

"Absolutely not!" Natsumi and Ai said in unison.

Suddenly, we sensed a stern aura behind us. It was Mayuri, her angry expression transformed into her authoritative class representative face.

"You three, stop acting like children and get in," she commanded.

"Yes, ma'am!" we chimed in unison.

With that, we stepped through the creaking front gate, leaving the festival atmosphere behind.

As we entered the haunted house, the darkness seemed to swallow us whole. The air inside was thick with the scent of fog machines and sweat.

"Welcome to Your Worst Nightmare," the sign above the entrance creaked ominously.

As we ventured deeper into the haunted house, Mayuri's authoritative demeanor began to slip. Her eyes darted nervously around the dark corridors, and her grip on her backpack straps tightened.

"Mayuri, you okay?" I asked, noticing her unease.

She nodded curtly. "I'm fine."

But I knew better. Mayuri's tough exterior hid a vulnerable side, one she rarely showed. As class representative, she felt responsible for maintaining order and discipline. But in this haunted house, she was just a scared 16-year-old girl.

Ai seemed to sense Mayuri's fear too. She reached out and took Mayuri's hand, offering a reassuring smile.

"Hey, we're in this together," Ai whispered.

Mayuri's expression softened, and for a moment, I saw a glimmer of the girl behind the mask.

Natsumi, still clinging to my arm, looked up at me with wide eyes. "Onii-chan, I'm scared."

I wrapped my arm around her shoulders. "Don't worry, I've got you."

As we turned a corner, a sudden loud bang shook the floor. Mayuri's hand flew to her mouth, stifling a scream.

Ai's grip on Mayuri's hand tightened. "It's okay, Mayuri."

Mayuri's eyes met Ai's, and for a moment, I saw a flash of gratitude.

"Thanks, Ai," Mayuri whispered.

The moment passed, and Mayuri's mask slipped back into place. "Let's keep moving."

We continued through the haunted house, the scares intensifying with each step. Mayuri's fear began to show, but Ai's presence kept her grounded.

Natsumi, still clinging to my arm, looked up at Ai with a mischievous grin.

"Ai-Chan, did you forget the rules? At this rate, I will win!" Natsumi exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with triumph.

Ai's eyes narrowed. "No way, Natsumi! I'm just getting started!"

Mayuri's eyes flicked between Ai and Natsumi, a hint of amusement in their depths.

"You two are something else," Mayuri said, shaking her head.

I chuckled, feeling the tension ease. "Let's focus on surviving the haunted house, shall we?"

The room began to spin, and creepy clown dolls seemed to close in around us.

Natsumi's grip on my arm tightened. "Onii-chan, I'm scared!"

I wrapped my arm around her shoulders. "Don't worry, I've got you."

Ai shot Natsumi a competitive glance. "You're not going to win that easily, Natsumi!"

Mayuri's voice was barely audible. "Can we... just get out of here?"

As we navigated the creepy clown room, Natsumi's grip on my arm tightened.

"Ai-Chan, you're falling behind!" Natsumi teased, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

Ai shot Natsumi a competitive glance. "Oh no, I'm not going to let you win!"

Mayuri's voice was barely audible. "Can we... just focus on getting out of here?"

Ai turned to Mayuri, her expression apologetic. "Sorry, Mayuri, but if I don't cling to Asahi, I'll lose to Natsumi."

With that, Ai wrapped her arms around my waist, clinging tightly.

Natsumi protested, "No clinging until scares!"

Ai whispered, her voice trembling, "I'm pretty scared already, ain't I, dear?"

Mayuri smiled, a gentle, reassuring smile. "You are."

Then, Mayuri tugged at my shirt from behind. "Asahi, I think I'm getting scared too."

Ai's eyes narrowed. "No fair, Mayuri! You can't cling too!"

Mayuri's voice was barely audible. "I... I can't help it."

Natsumi giggled. "Ai-Chan, we're in trouble!"

Ai protested, "This is cheating! Mayuri's not supposed to cling!"

Mayuri's grip on my shirt tightened. "I... I need to hold on to something."

I felt a pang of sympathy for Mayuri. She was really scared.

"It's okay, Mayuri," I whispered. "I've got you."

Ai huffed. "Fine, but I'm still going to win!"

As we exited the clown room, a dark corridor stretched before us.

Natsumi whispered, "What's next?"

Ai's grip on my waist tightened. "I don't know, but I'm ready."

Mayuri's voice was barely audible. "I... I don't think I can do this."

I turned to Mayuri, concern etched on my face. "Mayuri, we can leave if you want."

Mayuri's eyes met mine, determination in their depths. "No... I'll do it."

As we navigated the haunted house, Mayuri's clinginess reached absurd levels.

Whenever she gets scared, she wraps her arms around my waist, and buries her face in my shoulder.

"A-A-Asahi, don't leave me!" Mayuri stuttered, her voice trembling.

I chuckled, trying to reassure her. "I won't, Mayuri. I've got you."

Mayuri's face flushed pink as she realized how tightly she was clinging.

Ai shot Mayuri a stern glance. "Mayuri, what's gotten into you?"

Natsumi frowned. "Yeah, Mayuri, you're being really clingy."

Mayuri's voice was barely audible. "I-I'm sorry... I'm just scared..."

She clung harder, her face burning with embarrassment.

I smiled, trying to reassure her. "It's okay, Mayuri. I've got you."

Ai crossed her arms, looking annoyed. "This isn't fair. You're supposed to be tough, Mayuri."

Natsumi pouted. "Yeah, Mayuri, you're ruining the game."

Mayuri's eyes dropped, her face flushing deeper.

Suddenly, a ghostly figure appeared before us.

"AHHHH!" Mayuri screamed, her face buried in my shoulder.

I laughed, trying to calm her down. "It's okay, Mayuri. It's just a costume."

Mayuri's response was to cling harder, her arm, wrapping around me.

Her face was bright red, and she couldn't meet my eyes.

Ai glared. "Mayuri, stop being so clingy!"

Natsumi stomped her foot. "Yeah, Mayuri, this isn't funny anymore!"

I chuckled, trying to diffuse the tension.

As we continued through the haunted house, Mayuri's clinginess became increasingly ridiculous.

But every time she clung harder, she blushed and looked away.

As we exited the haunted house, Mayuri's face was still flushed.

"I-I'm sorry... I was really scared..." Mayuri stammered.

Ai crossed her arms, still looking annoyed. "You didn't have to cling to Asahi the whole time."

Natsumi pouted. "Yeah, Mayuri, you ruined the game. But I guess you won this round."

Natsumi grinned mischievously. "You clung to Onii-chan the most."

I chuckled. "Well, I suppose Mayuri did get pretty scared."

Ai and Natsumi chimed in unison, "Pervert!"

Mayuri's face burned brighter, and she looked away, her cheeks flushing deeper.

"I-I didn't mean to be scared," Mayuri stuttered.

Natsumi teased, "Onii-chan's nice to everyone, but you're really lucky."

Ai rolled her eyes. "Don't get too comfortable, Mayuri."

I laughed, shaking my head. "You two are something else."

As we walked away from the haunted house, Ai and Natsumi started bickering.

"I would have won if Mayuri-Onee-Chan hadn't cheated," Ai said.

"No way, I was winning until Mayuri clung to Onii-chan," Natsumi argued.

I chuckled, shaking my head.

Mayuri spoke up, her voice still shaky. "I-I think I've had enough scares for today."

Ai smiled sweetly. "Aww, poor Mayuri."

Natsumi grinned. "Yeah, let's get some cotton candy, Onii-chan."

I smiled. "Sounds good to me."

As we walked through the school's cultural festival grounds, Natsumi skipped ahead, her eyes shining with excitement.

"Onii-chan, let's check out the food stalls!" Natsumi called out.

I smiled, following after her. "Sounds good to me."

Ai walked beside me, her arm brushing against mine. "Hey, Asahi, what's next?"

Mayuri trailed behind us, still looking a bit shaken from the haunted house.

Natsumi turned back, grinning mischievously. "Hey, Mayuri, you okay? You look pale."

Mayuri's face flushed slightly. "I-I'm fine... just a little shaken."

I chuckled. "Don't worry, Mayuri. The festival's not all scares."

Ai added, "Yeah, we can check out the class exhibits or watch the performances."

Natsumi exclaimed, "Ooh, yeah! Let's go see the drama club's play!"

Mayuri's eyes widened. "I-I heard it's really good this year."

I reassured her, "We'll stick together."

Ai and Natsumi chimed in unison, "Pervert!"

Mayuri's face burned brighter, and she looked away.

I laughed, shaking my head. "You two are something else."

As we walked, we stumbled upon a photo booth set up by the school's photography club.

Natsumi squealed. "Onii-chan, let's take a photo!"

Ai smiled. "Sounds fun."

Mayuri hesitated, but Natsumi dragged her along.

We squeezed into the photo booth, laughing and joking as we took silly photos.

Natsumi giggled, examining the printed photos. "Onii-chan, you look hilarious!"

Ai playfully rolled her eyes. "You're not exactly flattering either, Natsumi."

Mayuri blushed, hiding behind her hair.

As we exited the photo booth, Ai checked her watch. "We've got a few minutes before the concert starts. Natsumi, go sit with Mayuri Onee-chan; we'll join you soon."

Natsumi pouted. "But Onii-chan?"

I petted her head, smiling. "I'll be there in a minute. Don't annoy Mayuri too much, okay?"

Natsumi's face lit up with a smile. "Okay, Onii-chan."

Ai smiled, taking my hand. "We'll grab some drinks and meet you there."

Natsumi skipped off, dragging Mayuri to the concert area.

Mayuri turned back, her eyes meeting mine for a brief moment.

I smiled, feeling a pang of affection.

Ai leaned into me, her voice soft. "Asahi, what's taking you so long?"

I chuckled, following Ai. "Just making sure Natsumi behaves."

As we walked, I whispered to Ai, "Natsumi's in for a surprise."

Ai's eyes sparkled. "Yep."

Natsumi bounced up and down in her seat, excitement radiating from her face. "When will Onii-chan come? The concert is going to start!"

Mayuri smiled, her eyes shining with knowledge. "Just wait, Natsumi."

The emcee took the stage, microphone in hand. "Welcome to the school's cultural festival concert! Our first performance is a special duet by..."

The emcee paused for dramatic effect.

"...Asahi and Ai from Class 3-A!"

The audience applauded as Natsumi's eyes widened in shock.

"Onii-chan! Ai-chan! They're performing!" Natsumi squealed.

Mayuri smiled calmly, having expected this announcement.

Nearby students turned to each other, whispering. "Who knew Asahi and Ai were singing?"

Natsumi grabbed Mayuri's arm. "Why didn't Onii-chan tell me?"

Mayuri leaned in, her voice barely audible over the applause. "I think it was a surprise."

The curtains parted, revealing Ai and me standing confidently on stage.

Ai adjusted her mic stand, giving a radiant smile.

I grinned, giving Natsumi a reassuring nod.

The music began, and Ai's voice soared through the auditorium.

I joined in, our harmonies blending perfectly.

Natsumi's face lit up with pride, cheering and clapping along.

Mayuri watched, a knowing smile on her face.

Ai's voice soared as we began to sing:

As the final notes of "Yūgure no Aki" faded away, the audience erupted into applause.

Natsumi jumped to her feet, tears streaming down her face. "Onii-chan! Ai-chan! You were amazing!"

Mayuri smiled softly, her eyes shining with admiration. "Asahi-kun, your voice is incredible."

I grinned, relieved and happy, as Ai and I took our final bow.

The emcee returned to the stage, beaming. "Thank you, Asahi and Ai, for that breathtaking performance!"

As we exited the stage, Natsumi flung herself into my arms. "Onii-chan, I'm so proud of you!"

I hugged her back, laughing. "Thanks, Natsumi. You're my best fan."

Mayuri approached us, her face glowing. "Asahi-kun, that song... it was like you sang directly to my heart."

Ai smiled, squeezing Mayuri's hand. "We're glad you enjoyed it."

Natsumi tugged on my arm. "Onii-chan, can we get a CD of that song? I want to listen to it every day!"

I chuckled. "We'll see, Natsumi."

As we walked offstage, surrounded by well-wishers and congratulations, I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Ai leaned into me, her voice barely audible over the din. "You were amazing up there."

I smiled, putting my arm around her. "We made a great team."

The concert organizer approached us, beaming. "Asahi, Ai, you two stole the show! We'd love to have you perform again next year."

I exchanged a look with Ai, and we shared a triumphant smile.

The rest of the cultural festival flew by in a blur of color and sound.

Natsumi stuck close, beaming with pride.

As the sun began to set, the festival organizers announced the final event: the closing ceremony.

The student council president, I mean Mayuri, took the stage, thanking everyone for their hard work and participation.

As the ceremony concluded, fireworks exploded across the night sky.

Natsumi squealed, her eyes shining. "Onii-chan, look!"

Mayuri smiled, her face aglow. "Beautiful."

I wrapped my arms around Ai and Natsumi. "Perfect ending to a perfect day."

Ai leaned into me, her voice barely audible over the fireworks. "I'm glad we shared this experience."

The festival came to a close, but the memories would linger.

The fireworks fizzled out, leaving behind a sky full of sparkling memories.

As we walked away from the festival grounds, Natsumi turned to me with a beaming smile.

"Onii-chan, best day ever!" she exclaimed.

Mayuri nodded in agreement. "Definitely unforgettable."

Ai slipped her hand into mine, her eyes shining with happiness.

I smiled, feeling grateful for this moment with the people I care about.

"Let's do it again next year," I said, squeezing Ai's hand.

The four of us walked off into the night, already looking forward to the next adventure.
