Chapter 42 - Flames In The Capital

Emerging from the Whispering Woods, Drake and his companions rushed toward the capital, the weight of their mission pressing heavily on their shoulders. The vibrant city, once a beacon of hope, now lay shrouded in dark smoke rising into the sky.

As they entered the gates, panic and chaos greeted them. Citizens ran through the streets, their faces streaked with soot and fear. Buildings blazed, engulfed in flames that twisted and turned like living serpents.

Drake's heart raced. "The Eternal Flame's influence has reached here already!"

"We need to help!" Mira shouted, rushing toward a nearby building engulfed in flames.

"Wait!" Drake called, but she was already sprinting into the inferno. Tyr and Elyra followed closely behind, but Drake hesitated. He felt the ember's energy surging, compelling him to act.

"Stay together!" he yelled, his voice drowned out by the crackling flames.

Drake sprinted into the fray, pushing past panicked civilians. He could hear the cries for help echoing around him, and with each step, his resolve hardened. The Eternal Flame would not claim this city without a fight.

Inside the burning building, Mira fought her way through the flames, her heart racing. She spotted a child trapped beneath a fallen beam, tears streaming down his face.

"Help!" he cried, struggling to free himself.

"Mira!" Drake's voice called from outside. "We need to get everyone out!"

Mira gritted her teeth, summoning her strength. She shoved aside debris, feeling the heat licking at her skin. With a final heave, she lifted the beam, freeing the child.

"Go!" she urged, shoving him toward the exit. "Get out now!"

The child ran, and Mira felt a surge of relief. But just then, a powerful wave of heat crashed into her, and a figure emerged from the flames—one of the Scorched, a being twisted by the Eternal Flame's corruption.

"Mira!" Drake shouted, seeing the threat. He charged forward, ready to defend her.

The Scorched lunged at Mira, its eyes glowing with malevolence. She dodged to the side, drawing her dagger. "Get back!" she yelled, slashing at the creature.

Drake arrived just in time, channeling the ember's energy through his sword. With a powerful swing, he struck the Scorched, sending it reeling back. The flames flickered and waned as the creature dissipated into ash.

"Are you okay?" Drake asked, concern etched on his face.

Mira nodded, catching her breath. "We have to get the others out before it spreads further."

Together, they moved through the building, rescuing trapped citizens and guiding them to safety. Each rescue fueled their determination, but the flames grew fiercer, threatening to consume everything.

As they emerged onto the street, the chaos intensified. Dark figures moved through the crowd—agents of the Eternal Flame, instigating panic and destruction.

"We need to regroup," Tyr called, fighting off another Scorched. "We can't let them divide us!"

Drake looked around, spotting a group of guards who seemed to be organizing a defense. "There! We can join forces with them!"

They sprinted toward the guards, who were desperately trying to maintain order. As they reached the front lines, Drake felt the ember burning brightly, urging him to take charge.

"Listen!" he shouted, raising his sword. "We are here to help. We need to unite against this threat!"

The guards hesitated, glancing at each other. Finally, their captain stepped forward. "If you have a plan, now's the time!"

Drake took a deep breath, feeling the weight of responsibility. "We fight back. Together. We will extinguish these flames and protect the capital!"

The crowd rallied around him, and for the first time, hope flickered amidst the chaos. They formed a line, ready to face the advancing forces of the Eternal Flame.

"Let's show them what we're made of!" Drake shouted, raising his sword high. The ember glowed brightly, igniting the hearts of those around him.

Together, they charged into the flames, ready to reclaim their city and stand against the rising darkness.
