"Well, well, well," he sneered. "Looks like someone is trying to make a break for it."
Lyse's heart sank and she closed her eyes. She had been so close. "You won't get away with this, Max," she said, her voice defiant. "The police will find you, my husband is not going to take it easy on you."
Max laughed, a cold, mirthless sound. "The police? They are not going to find anything. I am too smart for them."
He took a step in her direction and she took a step back, trying to keep as much distance between them as she could. "As for your husband… he does not care about you." When Lyse shook her head, he nodded with a grin. "Yes. Do you know that there has been no report on your disappearance? Not even a single word."
A chill pervaded Lyse. If no one was looking for her then she was in trouble. She thought bitterly about how Levi had hounded her until she accepted to be his wife and now he had abandoned her.
