Chapter 13 - Secrets of the Morning

I approached the outskirts of town and my residence quickly. The day was rough and tomorrow I had many things to do and prepare. After I swiftly made it to the gate and looked at the scene before me, I felt Deja Vu.

Didn't I see this exact same scene yesterday? Georgis was sitting on the porch smoking his pipe with the same night sky above him. I approached him on the porch again and, like the previous night, took a seat next to him.

"How was your time out?" I asked him after a moment.

"It was delightful. We played cards and drank to our heart's content."

"Cards, huh, did you win?"

Georgis laughed at my question as if the answer was obvious. "Of course not. My good friend John whom you met on your first night here destroyed everyone."

"Is that so," I said remembering watching him play against Aaron.

"Oh, yes. He is a very experienced card player who could be considered a professional. Not a single person I have ever known has been able to beat or get a read on what he is doing in the game."

"I didn't know he was that good," I replied in amazement.

Who would have thought a possible professional card player would be found in a small town like this? The world really is quite small and large at the same time. You can find the minuscule things anywhere if you look hard enough but may lose the big things forever if you don't hold onto them. A very twisted reality indeed.

"So, what happened to you tonight?" Georgis asked.

"Well, we went to the bar and chatted about normal things for a while, and then a fight broke out between two people who were scammed."

"A fight you say?"

"Yes, but luckily it resolved rather well when a group of men who were chatting in the middle of the tavern stepped in and didn't let it get too out of hand."

Georgis wore a calm look on his face after hearing everything I told him. He had contentment and peace that I couldn't help but be jealous of.

"The men who jumped in must be the low-level adventurers who defend the villagers if their job leads them to danger," Georgis said.

"So, a team of local adventurers who only seek to escort the villagers of this town?" I asked just to clarify if what I heard was correct.

"That's right, they are low-level without any abilities but greater physical strength than the average person. They grew up here and had to witness a Billings resident die every now and then due to a wild animal attack or a forest fire. But ever since they started protecting residents from danger nobody has died."

"They sound like a true godsend," I said.

"They are and the village people can't thank them enough for it...."

"I suppose it is about time to call it a night. Tomorrow, I've got something new and unique for us to do," Georgis said before slowly standing on his feet.

His legs trembled as he stomped the ground repeatedly. He then proceeded to shake them out before wobbling forward in uncertain steps.

"Don't you hate it when your legs seem to fall asleep on you?" he asked me as he reached for the door to the house.

"It happens to me all the time," I replied.

Seeing as all my day's events were over, I knew it was time to hit the hay. I headed to my shack with heavy footsteps. Although I had taken a nap earlier in the day my body was very sore and beat up.

After I got inside, I changed into fresh pajamas. AKA the pajamas I was teleported in and had to handwash. I didn't have another pair sadly. The only clothes I got are the pajamas and 3 outfits in the closet for the time being.

Before I pulled back the covers to my bed, I remembered to do something I told myself I would do earlier but didn't think about until now. I pulled out a piece of parchment from inside a drawer in the desk next to my bed and quickly scribbled down some alchemy formulas that I remembered from the book. The formulas I wrote down were the most practical to test out and I thought making a list of the herbs and ingredients ahead of time was smart planning.

Once my list was written and safely stored, I launched myself under the covers and quickly fell into the world of dreams.

When I woke up the next morning, it was still dark out. This was because I decided to wake up early for a morning run. I needed to exercise to maintain my stamina. Maintaining my stamina was crucial. What if I have to run away from a demon or a wild magical beast that wants me to be its dinner. Just imagining such a situation made the fine hairs on my arm stand up.

As I pulled back the covers to the bed, stood up, and stretched, I realized I felt much more rejuvenated after sleeping through the night than I did after taking a nap. All the soreness in my body seemed to have dissipated and I felt like I could run around the town 20 times in an hour.

I quickly changed into brown trousers and a white shirt. It didn't suit me as well as black did but the change of pace was nice.

Deciding to waste no more time after that, I bolted out the door and down the road. I ran through all the main roads of the village and the surrounding flower fields. The way the different colored pedals blur together when you take off at a fast pace was breathtaking. It was like I was a race car and the flowers my fans watching me go buzzing by at fast speeds.

The exhilarating feeling of being here instead of cooped up in a classroom to learn the skills of a corporate slave is the greatest feeling a human heart can bear.

Once I had finished the main portion of my run, I did a cooldown jog over to the plateau edge where I practiced magic the previous day.

I had a specific reason for going there. I had to confirm that a road market existed about a kilometer and a half from the cliff edge. I should be able to see it from the clifftop.

I'd say it took me 10 minutes to reach the edge from the main village. So, 5 minutes to Georgis's property from the village and then another 5 minutes from there to the plateau edge.

When I reached the plateau edge I squinted and put my hand above my eyes to create shade. It was sunrise when I made it to the edge and very hard to see far with how bright it was.

But despite the limited visibility, there it was, way off in the distance. I could barely make it out, but it existed on the horizon. I must have missed it when I practiced magic up here. It was understandable why I did because I did not focus on looking for it.

Now that I knew it existed, I decided to go check it out. However, it wasn't as easy as walking or running down the road. First, I had to climb down the steep trail built through the cliff.

The trail was not far away; I only had to travel 100 meters or so. As I walked at a swift pace, I decided to rummage through the pockets of my pants. Inside, I found an old scrap of paper. I pulled it out and examined it, I found out it read "I have cracked the fundamental magic principle of power supply. The universe is just within my reach with this discovery."

"The fundamental principle of power supply?" I blurted out. I couldn't help but be skeptical of this note being a joke or something. I mean why would someone who cracked the power supply of magic, one of this world's greatest mysteries be writing it down in pants that managed to end up in a countryside village?

The power supply was the unique universal flow that seemed to grant the magic language the ability to manifest the spell you want. No one knows how or why it happens or the true limits of magic but whoever wrote this note seems to claim they do.

For the time being as I reached the trail to trek down the cliff, I put the note matter in the back of my mind and decided to focus on the task at hand.

Pebbles flew off the path as I slowly hiked down with precision. One wrong move and I would fall to a very unpleasant death or at the very least serious injury. Nearing the bottom, I couldn't understand why this trail wouldn't be better. After all, many businessmen and merchants travel this road and have to use this path all the time.

When I finally reached the bottom after my good 5-minute struggle. I looked out over the well-maintained dirt road to my future destination and headed towards it.
