The dim light from above flickered and cast long shadows on the cold concrete floor. Avery's back was against the wall of the empty building and her arms were tightly tied to a rusty pipe. Even though her heart was beating fast, she wouldn't let fear take over. She had been here for hours or even days, and it was very quiet.
The sound of footsteps echoed and got louder as someone got closer. Avery's head snapped up, and she couldn't breathe. That sound was too familiar to her.
Liam.
He walked into the narrow beam of light. He was big and tall. His eyes locked onto hers, sparkling with a mixture of laughter and something darker—something colder.
"You look uncomfortable," Liam said, his voice smooth and mocking. "I didn't think you'd be so stubborn, Avery."
Avery glared at him, her voice steady despite the pounding in her chest. "What do you want from me, Liam?"
