Chapter 83 - Chapter 83: The Corruption of Greed

The bid was raised by fifty million, drawing the attention of everyone in the room. When they realized that the bidder was Kassadin, most people immediately lost interest.

However, a few who had originally intended to bid on the island continued to raise their offers.

"260 million."

A burly man with a brutish face raised his paddle.

"270 million."

"280 million."

"300 million."

As the bids escalated, the other three bidders also increased their offers. Those who participated in such events were usually billionaires or close to it.

Although they were wary of Kassadin, the potential benefits of developing the island were too enticing to ignore. Moreover, there were many opportunities for under-the-table dealings, making it clear why they were reluctant to give up without a fight.

Seeing the fierce bidding, others in the crowd watched with interest.

"350 million."

Harvey, unfazed by the competition, made another bid. He understood that to establish a powerful presence for the Void in the galaxy, he needed to participate in these auctions fairly—bidding the highest amount won.

Using his power to get things done was just one option, but if he could resolve matters with money, he would choose that route.

The bid of 350 million quickly dissuaded the other four bidders. Their goal was to acquire the island for around 400 million, with an additional three to four hundred million needed for development. Advertising, networking, and other expenses would push the total cost to around one billion.

Although the island promised long-term benefits, Kassadin's determination to acquire it made further bidding impractical. An excessively high bid could risk offending Kassadin, which wasn't worth the trouble.

The auctioneer's hammer struck every ten seconds, the sound echoing throughout the hall.

"Lot 634 bids 350 million, once."

"Lot 634 bids 350 million, twice."

"Lot 634 bids 350 million, third and final time. Congratulations to Lot 634. Please proceed to the back office to complete the transaction."

After a full thirty seconds, no one else placed a bid.

To participate in this auction, attendees had to prove their assets exceeded five hundred million, so there was no doubt about their financial capacity.

Among the participants were business tycoons and wealthy families, all adept at avoiding risks and seizing opportunities.

The island's long-term benefits were significant, but the key was to avoid unnecessary competition. Kassadin, though not yet infamous in the galaxy, was feared enough to make bidders cautious.

The wealthier one was, the more prudent they became about avoiding danger. Competing against Kassadin was already a risk.

Now, the attendees could only hope Kassadin wouldn't show interest in other properties.

Harvey was surprised that the island was secured with just 350 million. Despite the higher currency value in the galaxy compared to the dollar, he hadn't expected it to be so inexpensive.

Satisfied with his acquisition, Harvey stood up.

Sonya, seeing Kassadin had purchased the island at such a high price, quickly rose and took his arm, preparing to leave.

The other attendees, relieved to see Kassadin—the formidable troublemaker—complete his purchase and move on, let out a collective sigh of relief.

Their interest shifted to Sonya, noting that she might either be a proxy or a romantic partner of Kassadin. Either way, her connection to him implied she enjoyed his protection.

Other women present noticed the envy in their wealthy companions' eyes as they watched Sonya depart.

Guided by a staff member, Harvey and Sonya were led to a private room. Although described as dark, it was spacious and well-lit.

"Mr. Kassadin, before you make the official payment, there's a rule we need to explain," said one of the men in the room.

"Since you're relatively new to Xandar, you'll need to find a resident to act as your proxy for the signing."

"If you don't have anyone in mind, you can pay half the price now, and we'll give you two months to find a suitable proxy."

"If you prefer, we can assist in finding a proxy for a fee of one hundred thousand."

As the man spoke, a sharply dressed gentleman with a stylish pompadour stood up, bowed slightly, and smiled.

"I've already arranged for her to act as my proxy," Harvey said, unperturbed by the rule.

"Very well, Mr. Kassadin," the man replied, his smile becoming more sincere. "Please rest assured that my actions are only to ensure compliance. We wouldn't want any complications with the New Star Legion that could also cause us trouble."

The man's expression turned serious and respectful as he finished speaking. Harvey nodded in acknowledgment.

"This lovely lady, we'll need to verify your identity," the man said to Sonya. "We need to ensure there are no issues with your background before proceeding."

The gentleman offered a courteous bow, though in such settings, touching the hand of a female companion, especially one who might be a mistress or adopted daughter, was considered inappropriate.

"Of course," Sonya responded, opening her bag and handing over the prepared identification documents.

Though she had never acted as a proxy before, she was well-acquainted with the process through her experience at the Luxe Hotel.

The man reviewed the documents and then used a scanning device to verify Sonya's background in front of Kassadin.

The scanner displayed her personal history, residence, assets, employment history, and any criminal record.

"Miss Sonya, thank you for your cooperation," the man said after reviewing the information. "Your identity is confirmed as valid for the proxy role. Once Mr. Kassadin makes the payment, you'll be able to sign the documents."

The man, maintaining his refined demeanor, concluded with a smile.

In the past, many women, inexperienced and tempted by the wealth of the elite, had been coerced into acting as proxies, often suffering serious consequences.

Today, however, it is rare to find such experienced professionals in this role, given the risks involved.

Despite her experience, Sonya's connection to Kassadin showed that even the most seasoned individuals could be swayed by money and influence.
