Her taunting voice echoed inside my head and I snapped my head around to meet her eyes. I watched as the corners of her lips curled upwards into a knowing smirk, smugness radiating off every inch off her skin.
I marched towards her, closing the distance between us in a few large strides while I kept my eyes on her. I grabbed her wrist, my nails digging into her flesh.
"What did you do?!" I questioned as we locked eyes.
She yanked her wrist out of my tight grasp and smiled at me.
"Nothing, just catching up with them. After all, it's been awhile since I have seen them, I just wanted to know how they are doing and what they have been up to," she commented nonchalantly, feigning innocence as the smile on her face grew wider this time, stretching across her face. She took a step forward. "And guess what? I found out that they hadn't met you and apparently Xavier had never mentioned a word about you and your pregnancy…" she mused as her eyes gleamed with satisfaction.
The same thoughts from the other day began to creep into my mind once again. I couldn't help but wonder if he was hiding something from me as a million questions swirled in my mind like a damn hurricane.
"Don't you find that suspicious?" She questioned this time when I hadn't said a word, her sharp words piercing through the air and snapping me back to reality.
"No, I don't," I said, my voice firm and certain yet I didn't even believe myself. I hid the doubt and suspicion on my face with a cold expression. "He just hadn't mentioned it. He's been busy."
She cackled. "Busy?" She repeated, raising her perfectly groomed brow at me. "No one is that busy. Don't say I didn't warn you… There's something suspicious going on. And I won't say a word about this to his parents if you sign the documents and let me work with you."
The thought of signing it crossed my mind for a second but I stopped myself, shaking it off.
"I'm not doing it."
A slight smirk appeared on her lips. "Then don't blame me for what I'm about to do," she warned with a knowing look plastered across her face. I watched as she reached for her pocket and pulled her phone out, her fingers hovering over the buttons. I knew exactly what she was going to do.
In the heat of a moment, I lunged forward and snatched the phone out of her hand before throwing it onto the ground and smashing it.
Her eyes widened in pure shock and disbelief. Her gaze flickered down to look at her phone lying on the ground before she looked back up to glare at me with a fiery blaze swirling in the depths of her eyes.
"What the hell did you just do?!" She shrieked, her high-pitched voice almost shattering my eardrums.
As if on cue, I watched as a familiar figure walked out from the front gate and marched towards us. It was James, his features were masked with an angry expression and his fists were clenched tightly beside him.
"What is going on!" His voice boomed loudly and before I knew it, he was standing right in front of me and staring down at me with an intimidating look etched onto his face.
Evelyn's demeanour shifted entirely in front of her father as she played the victim, putting on a pitiful look that stretched across her face. She wrapped her arms around her father's arm and looked up at him with doe eyes.
"Daddy… She broke my phone. She smashed it onto the ground for no reason. I don't know what I did to make her angry…" she muttered softly under her breath and I saw his features hardened and his posture stiffened in an instant, emotions running wild in his eyes.
I hadn't even had the chance to utter a single word when I felt pain shot through my body and a soft yelp escaped my parted lips as he slapped me across the face without a single warning. I looked back at him, shock evident in my eyes while a smirk carved itself onto Evelyn's lips.
"Did you smash my daughter's phone to get revenge on her?" He questioned, his sharp voice cutting through the tension that was lingering in the air. "Do you feel injustice? Are you unhappy that my daughter didn't go to jail for bribery? Is this what this is about?!" He yelled, his voice dripping with accusation as he glared at me with obvious disdain and contempt written all over his face.
The smirk was still lingering on her lips as she stepped forward to wrap her fingers around her father's arm. "It's alright, daddy… Don't blame her. She has the right to be upset and mad. After all, I was the one who caused this mess."
He turned to look at her and his features softened immediately. He placed his hands on her shoulders and let a smile grace his lips. "No, Eve," he started, his voice soft and gentle. "You didn't do anything, you didn't cause any mess," he reassured.
Standing in front of them, I couldn't help but to laugh, letting a humourless chuckle escape my lips, my face expressionless and I was feeling numb from the anger.
"Didn't do anything? Didn't cause any mess?" I repeated, letting another laughter leave my lips. "That's funny. I have always known that Evelyn is delusional and reckless. I guess I know now that she must have learnt it from you," I spat the words out like they were poison in my mouth as I looked up and my eyes met James'.
"You –!" He raised his arm once again but I slapped his arm away before he could even lay a finger on me.
"Aurelia!" Evelyn's shrill voice reached my ears. She looked at me with her brows furrowed together, forming a deep crease in her forehead. "How could you say that about my dad?!"
James placed his hand on his chest as he drew in deep breaths, anger evident in his eyes.
"Evelyn, call the guards! Call them right now!"
Before I knew it, the guards had come and dragged me by my arms, pulling me into the Lloyd's family mansion despite my struggles and protests. They let me go, throwing me onto the ground and I fell onto my knees. I looked up to see my mother standing in front of me eyes as she looked down at me with an empty look in her eyes and a cold expression plastered across her face.
"You are lucky that we didn't fire you after what your daughter did!" James' voice reverberated in the large living hall as he screamed into my mother's face, his voice shaking with pure rage. There was a deadly look etched onto his face before he threw Evelyn's already broken phone onto the floor, landing on the ground with a loud thud. "See this is how she repays our kindness!"
