Chapter 49: Sophistication in the Marine
Sakazuki's eyes widened in shock. When he'd met Rob Lucci, the deputy director of CP0, the man had been insufferably arrogant. Sakazuki had even felt the urge to smash his head in. Yet now, this same man was showing humility toward Chiba, calling him "the legendary Marine" with a surprisingly friendly demeanor.
Chiba, caught off guard, asked, "Legendary Marine?"
Rob Lucci smiled. "Mr. Chiba, you've been busy with your research here in Marineford, so perhaps you're unaware of your reputation. Across the world, people know your name."
"The training methods you've developed—Haki training, Qi exercises, body-strengthening elixirs, and the foundation-building pills—have enhanced Marine's combat power by tenfold. The Foundation Building Pill alone has revolutionized Marine's strength. For many Marines, you're a living legend. Even pirates speak of you with caution."
Rob Lucci's voice was unusually respectful, almost reverent. Sengoku and Tsuru exchanged glances, each seeing the same astonishment reflected in the other's eyes. They knew all too well the haughty nature of CP0, the organization that answered only to the Celestial Dragons and Five Elders. Rob Lucci, a senior figure within CP0, rarely even acknowledged the authority of Marine officials, and had even disregarded Sakazuki earlier. Yet here he was, acting deferentially toward Chiba.
What could Rob Lucci be planning? they wondered.
Chiba smiled, dismissing the praise. "Just a few minor advancements, nothing worth mentioning."
"Mr. Chiba, you're too modest. Your work has had an immeasurable impact, and as CP0, we understand that better than anyone. In fact, we're very interested in seeing where you conduct this groundbreaking research. Would you mind showing us your laboratory?"
"Certainly. Let's go." Chiba rose, gesturing for them to follow.
As Chiba led Lucci and the other CP0 representatives toward his lab, Sengoku and the others moved to accompany them, but a CP0 agent raised a hand. "Deputy Chief Lucci wishes to speak to Mr. Chiba alone. Please wait here."
Sengoku's brow furrowed. What is Rob Lucci's game?
Tsuru leaned close to Sengoku and murmured a quick message to him and Garp. "They may be trying to isolate Chiba to capture him."
Garp grinned, his white teeth flashing. "Don't worry. Chiba's got his girls with him—Peacock and Hina would make quick work of them."
Sengoku relaxed, remembering the recent rise of the two powerful women, now known as Man Snake Peacock and Pegasus Hina. With their supreme weapons, both wielded quasi-Admiral strength, ensuring that CP0 couldn't forcibly take Chiba without a fierce fight.
Meanwhile, as Lucci walked beside Chiba toward the lab, he made polite small talk, complimenting Chiba's achievements before finally addressing the real reason for his visit.
"Mr. Chiba, I won't beat around the bush. I'm here on behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of the World Government to invite you to our headquarters for a special research project."
"A secret project?" Chiba narrowed his eyes, prepared for this moment. So they've come for me after all.
Lucci nodded. "Precisely. Unfortunately, the details are classified. As you know, certain research can't be handled openly, so there won't be any official orders for this invitation."
Chiba halted, turning to face Lucci with a slight smile. "And if I choose not to accept?"
Lucci paused, meeting Chiba's gaze. "If you refuse…"
He trailed off, his expression unreadable, but Chiba subtly activated his Observation Haki, bracing himself.
Lucci's lips turned up in an unexpectedly friendly smile. "…then that's your choice. Who would want to work with the old-timer Kong anyway? Compared to CP0, his resources are paltry. If you ever reconsider, our organization would be honored to support your research."
The tension melted as Lucci's grin broadened, catching Chiba off guard. With a chuckle, Chiba replied, "Well, we'll see what the future holds."
Lucci nodded, changing the subject with enthusiasm. "By the way, I heard you've been experimenting with the Marine Six Styles. As you know, CP0 specializes in those techniques. With your insights, along with your energy elixirs and foundation pills, we could elevate our CP organization's power significantly."
Lucci's expression turned mischievous. "Naturally, we wouldn't expect to receive those enhancements without compensation. In exchange, I've prepared something special for you—something I believe you'll find quite valuable."
So that's your angle, Chiba thought, but played along, grinning. "Oh? My improvements on Finger Pistol, Iron Body, and Shave are impressive, but if your gift isn't up to par, don't expect to get even half a bottle of elixir from me."
Lucci laughed. "Rest assured, Mr. Chiba, I'm confident you'll be pleased."
Chiba's curiosity grew, intrigued by what the World Government's "gift" could be.
