Chapter 68 - Chapter 68: Shadows on the Horizon

The council chamber was dimly lit, its atmosphere thick with the weight of decisions yet to be made. The grand hall, usually alive with the energy of Rimuru's leadership, now felt somber, reflecting the recent losses. Padrino Penduko stood at the head of the long table, his expression grim but focused, while his trusted allies took their seats one by one.

Marko, ever the strategist, sat to Padrino's right, maps and documents already spread before him. His sharp eyes scanned the details, preparing for what would likely be their next move. Hinata was on Padrino's left, her light magic providing a small glow in the otherwise shadowed room. She had just returned from tending to the wounded, her face worn but resolute.

Asuna, the head of the Kingdom's defenses, sat across from them, her gaze intense. Beside her was Vincent, overseeing the economy and trade of Rimuru, his role now more crucial than ever as the war drained resources.

Padrino cleared his throat, breaking the silence. "The battle was won," he began, his voice low, "but it's clear that Galdros isn't done with us. They've retreated for now, but that's not the end of it."

Marko nodded, his fingers tracing over the map. "They'll regroup. They've lost General Viktor, and their forces are weakened, but we should expect another offensive soon. We need to be ready."

Asuna leaned forward. "Our defenses held this time, but barely. Another attack on this scale, and we may not be so fortunate. The walls need reinforcing, and we need more soldiers. Training will take time, but if we don't start now, we'll be overwhelmed."

Vincent added, "Resources are stretched thin. With the recent influx of refugees and the demands of the war, our food supplies are running low. Trade routes have been disrupted by the enemy, and we can't sustain the kingdom like this much longer."

The tension in the room was palpable. Rimuru had survived this far, but it was clear that their situation was growing increasingly desperate. Every victory seemed to come with a greater cost, and the threat of annihilation loomed larger with each passing day.

Hinata spoke up, her voice calm but determined. "There's still hope. We've forged alliances with nearby territories. If we reach out to them now, they might provide the aid we need—both in supplies and reinforcements. We've fought alone for too long."

Padrino considered her words. They had forged their kingdom out of the ashes of Earlshide, independent and strong, but the time for pride had passed. If Rimuru was to survive, they would need help.

"We'll send envoys to our allies," Padrino agreed. "But we also need to think beyond this war. Galdros won't stop until we're crushed or we find a way to end this conflict for good."

A heavy silence followed his words. The council had heard this before, but the reality of it was sinking in now. Galdros wasn't just an enemy; they were a force that wouldn't stop until all of Xandros was under their rule.

"What are you suggesting?" Marko asked, narrowing his eyes.

Padrino stood tall, his presence commanding. "We can't keep reacting to Galdros. We need to take the fight to them. Strike at the heart of their power before they can recover."

Vincent shifted uncomfortably in his seat. "That's a bold plan, Padrino. Galdros is vast. Even with reinforcements, attacking them head-on could stretch us thin. We've only just managed to repel them."

Padrino nodded, acknowledging the risk. "I'm not suggesting a full-scale invasion. We need to be strategic. Find where they're vulnerable, weaken their supply lines, and cripple their leadership. If we can create chaos within their ranks, they won't be able to mount another offensive."

Asuna's eyes gleamed with approval. "A surgical strike. Take out their leadership before they can regroup. If we hit them hard enough, we could destabilize their entire kingdom."

Hinata remained silent, thinking through the implications. "It's dangerous," she said quietly. "But it might be the only way."

Marko, ever the realist, looked at Padrino. "If we're going to do this, we'll need to be smart. Gather intelligence, identify their weaknesses, and strike when they least expect it. But you're right—we can't keep playing defense. Eventually, we'll break."

Padrino met each of their eyes, his voice resolute. "Then it's decided. We'll prepare for a counteroffensive. Marko, I need you to start gathering intelligence on Galdros' movements. Asuna, reinforce the defenses here and begin training new recruits. Vincent, see to it that we have enough resources to sustain our forces for the coming months. And Hinata…"

He paused, knowing the weight of the task he was about to give her. "We'll need you to lead the negotiations with our allies. Convince them that this is their fight too."

Hinata nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. "I'll do whatever it takes."

With their roles set, the council dispersed, leaving Padrino alone in the dimly lit chamber. His thoughts were heavy, burdened with the responsibility of leading his people through yet another trial. The road ahead was fraught with danger, and the price of victory would only grow steeper. But there was no turning back now.

Padrino walked out onto the balcony overlooking the city of Rimuru. Below, the streets bustled with activity as citizens tried to return to their normal lives in the wake of the battle. But he knew that peace was fleeting.

Far in the distance, beyond the horizon, the shadow of Galdros loomed. They would come again—stronger, more determined. And when they did, Padrino would be ready.

For his kingdom. For his people. For Rimuru.
