Chapter 33 - Snake

The flickering light of the new Akatsuki's dimly lit chamber cast long, dark shadows across the rocky walls, giving the room an eerie, foreboding atmosphere. Nyx and Konan stood side by side, their attention focused on the massive stone statue looming in front of them—the Gedo Mazo. The ancient, sinister figure's mouth was open, ready to receive yet another of the tailed beasts, this time the Four Tails, Son Goku, recently captured by the two women in a grueling battle.

The process of extraction was always grim. It was never easy, neither for the Jinchuriki nor those involved in the ritual. Konan stood silently, her expression unreadable as always, while Nyx kept her usual cold, composed demeanor. However, beneath the surface, Nyx's mind was racing. Her thoughts were drawn back to the battle—each strike, each decision, each moment of synergy with Konan, and the immense power they had just sealed.

Roshi, the Jinchuriki of the Four Tails, lay unconscious in the center of the chamber, bound by Konan's chakra-infused paper. His breathing was shallow, but the strain of holding such a monstrous power inside him was apparent. His skin was slick with sweat, and his face contorted in a mix of pain and exhaustion.

Pain, the leader of the Akatsuki, stood at the far side of the chamber, overseeing the ritual. His Rinnegan eyes flickered from Nyx to Konan, before settling on the statue once more. Each time he performed this process, the burden seemed to grow heavier. Though Pain's demeanor was detached, Nyx knew he, too, understood the gravity of extracting a tailed beast.

"Begin the extraction," Pain's voice rang out, cold and emotionless.

Nyx and Konan exchanged a glance, a silent acknowledgment passing between them. Despite their differences, they understood the task at hand. Nyx moved forward, kneeling beside the unconscious Roshi. The immense power of the Four Tails still clung to the air, like a distant roar echoing in the back of her mind. With a calm breath, Nyx placed her hand on Roshi's chest, sending a pulse of her chakra to initiate the sealing.

Konan stepped forward, standing beside Nyx as she activated her own chakra, the thousands of paper tags she had attached to Roshi glowing faintly, acting as conduits for the extraction. They worked in unison, their powers flowing seamlessly into one another, a perfect blend of ice and paper, cold and restraint.

As the ritual began, Roshi's body jerked violently. A guttural groan escaped his lips as the chakra of the Four Tails was forcibly drawn from him. The ground beneath him trembled as the Gedo Mazo began to pull at the beast, its gnarled hands reaching out to grasp the volatile energy.

Nyx narrowed her eyes, focusing intently on the task. The room's temperature dropped as her frost-like chakra began to spiral around her, mixing with Konan's paper. She felt the weight of the beast's chakra pushing against her control, like a wild storm fighting to break free. But Nyx had done this before. She knew the steps, the careful precision it took to contain a being of such immense power.

Konan's voice, quiet and measured, cut through the tension. "Careful. The Four Tails is more volatile than the Six Tails. Don't let your guard down."

Nyx gave a small nod, her gaze unwavering. "I know," she replied, her voice calm despite the swirling pressure around them.

The extraction dragged on, each second feeling like an eternity. Roshi's body convulsed again, his face twisting in agony as the chakra was ripped from him. Nyx tightened her grip, her icy fingers biting into his skin as she worked to maintain control. Frost began to form on the ground beneath her, spreading out in a thin, crystalline web. The air grew colder, and the moisture in the room turned to ice, shimmering faintly in the dim light.

Konan's paper fluttered around them, wrapping Roshi in a cocoon of protective seals to prevent the beast from escaping too early. Her chakra was steady, precise, a constant reassurance that they were still in control. The two women moved in perfect harmony, their powers intertwining as they worked to contain the massive force within Roshi.

After what felt like hours, the room began to change. The oppressive weight of the Four Tails' chakra started to lift, drawn fully into the Gedo Mazo. The Jinchuriki's body slackened, his skin paling as the last vestiges of the tailed beast were torn from him.

Pain's voice broke through the silence once more. "It's done."

Nyx withdrew her hand from Roshi's chest, standing slowly. The ice that had spread beneath her feet began to melt, leaving the ground slick and wet. She exhaled, a cold mist escaping her lips as she regained her composure. Beside her, Konan's paper fluttered back to her, dissolving into nothingness as she released the seals.

Roshi lay still, his body limp and unresponsive. The extraction had taken its toll, and there was no doubt that he wouldn't survive much longer. Nyx glanced down at him, her expression unreadable. She had done this before—witnessed the aftermath of such extractions—but it never got easier. Even for someone as detached as her, there was always a moment of unease, a reminder of the cost of power.

Konan moved closer to Nyx, her eyes soft as she regarded Roshi. "It's over," she said quietly.

Nyx nodded, but her eyes remained fixed on the Jinchuriki. "We've taken another life for this cause. Do you ever wonder if it's worth it?"

Konan was silent for a moment, her gaze distant. "We all have our reasons for fighting. Whether it's worth it... that's something we each have to decide for ourselves."

Nyx's expression hardened, her frosty aura flaring for a brief moment before she suppressed it. "I fight because it's all I've ever known," she said, her voice low. "But sometimes... sometimes I wonder if there's more to it than that."

Konan's hand gently touched Nyx's arm, her fingers warm against the cold of her skin. "There is more, Nyx. You just have to find it."

For a moment, there was silence between them, the tension in the air fading as they stood together. Nyx glanced at Konan, her icy blue eyes softening ever so slightly. She didn't respond, but the unspoken understanding between them was enough.

Pain stepped forward, his Rinnegan eyes flickering as he addressed the two women. "The Four Tails has been secured. You've done well."

Nyx and Konan turned to face him, their expressions neutral as they awaited further instructions.

"We'll move on to the next phase soon," Pain continued, his voice cold and commanding. "But for now, return to the lair and rest. You've both earned it."

With a small nod, Nyx and Konan turned to leave the chamber, the weight of the extraction still heavy on their minds. As they walked, their steps in sync, Nyx felt the cold bite of the air against her skin. She glanced at Konan, who walked silently beside her, her paper wings folded neatly behind her.

As they made their way through the winding halls of the Akatsuki's base, Nyx's thoughts wandered. She had fought alongside Konan countless times, but there was something different about this mission—something about the way they had worked together, the way their abilities had synchronized so perfectly.

Nyx's eyes flickered to Konan once more, her voice breaking the silence between them. "You fought well today."

Konan looked at her, a small smile playing at her lips. "So did you."

Nyx's expression softened, and for a moment, there was a quiet understanding between them—a bond that went beyond their roles in the Akatsuki. They had fought together, bled together, and now, as they walked side by side, they shared a silent camaraderie that few could understand.

As they reached their quarters, Nyx paused, her gaze lingering on Konan for a brief moment. "Get some rest. We'll need our strength for whatever comes next."

Konan nodded, her eyes soft as she regarded Nyx. "You too, Nyx."

Nyx stood in the quiet solitude of her room, the weight of the previous day's events still heavy on her mind. The battle to capture Roshi had been taxing—both physically and emotionally. Yet, in the end, she and Konan had succeeded, as they always did. Still, something about that mission lingered, a quiet unease that she couldn't quite shake. Maybe it was the constant destruction they wrought or the lives they took for the Akatsuki's cause.

With a sigh, Nyx ran her fingers through her dark hair, her gaze drifting toward the window where the early morning light filtered through. It was then that she noticed it—a small envelope resting on the windowsill, a stark contrast to the frost-kissed surface.

Her eyes narrowed. She hadn't sensed anyone near her quarters. The Akatsuki's lair was heavily guarded, not a place easily breached. Whoever had left the letter was no ordinary intruder.

Nyx crossed the room in a few swift strides and picked up the letter. The parchment was plain, unmarked, and the writing inside was cryptic:

"Meet me at the bridge up north."

That was all it said—no name, no signature, just an instruction. The handwriting was neat but unfamiliar, written with purpose.

"What is this…?" Nyx muttered under her breath, her cold eyes scanning the note once more. She didn't like it. It felt off—suspicious. But then again, everything in her world was steeped in shadows and deceit.

Nyx's first instinct was to dismiss it, to ignore the strange message and focus on her duties. Yet, something about the letter gnawed at her curiosity. If someone had gone to such lengths to deliver this, it must be important. And if it was a trap, well…she'd dealt with far worse.

"Fine," she muttered, crumpling the note in her hand.

With practiced efficiency, Nyx donned her Akatsuki attire, the black cloak with red clouds falling over her slim form like a shadow. Her short blade, perpetually encrusted with frost, rested against her back, and she slipped her usual white scarf around her neck, more out of habit than necessity. As always, the air around her seemed to drop several degrees, frost creeping up the walls as she moved.

The bridge mentioned in the letter wasn't far, just a short journey north through the dense forest. As she made her way, Nyx couldn't help but remain on high alert, her senses heightened. The trees surrounding her whispered with the wind, their leaves trembling in the biting cold that accompanied her presence. The path was familiar, yet the situation felt anything but.

Soon enough, the bridge came into view, spanning a wide, flowing river below. It was an old structure, wooden and worn, but still sturdy enough to hold. Nyx's gaze swept over the scene, and then she saw him—a lone figure, cloaked and hooded, standing at the center of the bridge. His posture was calm, nonchalant, as though he had been waiting for her for some time.

Nyx approached cautiously, her hand instinctively resting on the hilt of her blade. The figure made no move, but she could sense the subtle tension in the air. This wasn't some ordinary meeting. Whoever this was, they had come prepared.

When she was a few paces away, the figure spoke, his voice smooth and almost amused. "I'm glad you came."

Nyx raised an eyebrow, her expression cold and indifferent. "Who are you?" she demanded, her tone cutting through the quiet like a blade. "And why did you call me here?"

The figure chuckled softly, the sound muffled beneath the hood. "Oh, you'll recognize me soon enough."

With that, the man slowly lifted his hands to his hood, pulling it back to reveal his face. Nyx's eyes widened slightly in recognition, though her expression remained composed. His pale skin, silver hair, and snake-like features were unmistakable.

"Kabuto…" she said, her voice barely above a whisper but laced with thinly veiled contempt. "I should've known."

Kabuto Yakushi—once a loyal servant of Orochimaru, now a rogue shinobi with dangerous ambitions of his own. The last she had heard, he had been in hiding, experimenting with forbidden jutsu, but now here he was, standing before her like a ghost from the past.

Kabuto smiled, his golden eyes glinting with something dark and sinister. "It's been a while, Nyx. I wasn't sure you'd come, but I'm pleased to see you've lost none of your…sharp instincts."

Nyx's grip tightened on her blade. "If this is some ploy to lure me into one of your twisted experiments, I'll end you before you have the chance."

Kabuto raised his hands in mock surrender. "No need for threats. I didn't call you here to fight. Quite the opposite, actually. I have something…valuable to offer you."

Nyx's icy blue eyes narrowed. "And why would I be interested in anything you have to offer?"

Kabuto stepped closer, though not enough to provoke an attack. He was careful, calculating, as always. "Because what I'm offering concerns the Akatsuki, and more importantly, the future of the world as we know it."

Nyx remained silent, though her gaze never left him, scrutinizing every movement, every word. Kabuto had always been a manipulator, a master of half-truths and deceit. Trusting him was a dangerous game, but if what he said held even a grain of truth, it could be worth listening to.

"You're playing a dangerous game," Nyx said, her voice colder than the air around them. "Speak plainly, or I'll have no reason to keep listening."

Kabuto's smile never wavered. "Very well. I've recently gained access to something…extraordinary. Something Orochimaru himself sought but never truly grasped. I've unlocked the full potential of his research—something that could change the balance of power forever. But to fully realize its potential, I need someone with your unique abilities."

Nyx's eyes narrowed further, suspicion growing with every word. "And what, exactly, do you need from me?"

"I need your Kōrimeigan." Kabuto's eyes gleamed with a twisted excitement. "Your ability to control and freeze chakra is unlike anything I've ever encountered. With your dojutsu, I can complete my experiments and unlock the true secrets of life and death. Together, we could reshape the world, Nyx."

Nyx's expression hardened. "You want me to help you play god. Is that it?"

Kabuto's smile faded slightly, his tone growing more serious. "I'm offering you power beyond anything you can imagine. The Akatsuki's goals align with what I'm proposing. You and I both know Pain's vision won't bring lasting peace. But together, we could achieve something greater—true control over the world's destiny."

Nyx was silent for a long moment, the weight of Kabuto's words sinking in. She had heard promises of power before, from people far more dangerous than him. Yet there was something unnerving about Kabuto's ambition, the way he spoke of life and death as though they were mere tools to be manipulated.

Her gaze flicked toward the river below, the sound of rushing water filling the silence between them. She could feel the cold seeping deeper into her bones, a reminder of the power she wielded—the power that Kabuto now coveted.

"You think I'd betray the Akatsuki for your delusions of grandeur?" Nyx said, her voice cutting through the tension like a shard of ice. "You've underestimated me, Kabuto."

Before he could respond, the temperature around them dropped drastically. Frost began to creep along the bridge, spreading outward from where Nyx stood. The air grew thick with cold, and Kabuto tensed, sensing the shift in her chakra.

"You're delusional," Nyx said, her voice colder than the frost around her. "If you think I'd betray the Akatsuki for your twisted experiments, you don't know me at all."

Kabuto's smile faded, replaced by a look of mild disappointment. "I see. Still, the offer stands. When you're ready to realize your true potential, I'll be waiting."

Nyx's icy gaze bore into him, unflinching. "I don't need your help. And if you try anything—" She didn't finish the sentence, letting the frost that gathered around her feet say the rest. Her hand hovered near her blade, ready for any sudden movements. Kabuto may have tried to seem harmless, but she knew better than to trust him or his intentions.

Kabuto simply shrugged, his confidence undeterred. "We'll see about that," he said calmly, turning away as though the conversation had ended on his terms.

But just as he took a step back, a familiar, slithery voice broke through the air, sending a shiver down Nyx's spine. "Where do you think you're going, Kabuto?"
