Chapter 17 - Feeling

The Akatsuki's headquarters stood as an imposing structure, concealed in the heart of a mountainous region. Jagged cliffs towered over the landscape, and a shroud of mist clung to the peaks, hiding the base like a secret kept from the world. As Nyx approached alongside Konan, the air around them grew thick with an eerie stillness. The cold stone walls and looming shadows whispered of the power that resided within. Nyx's steps were silent, but the frost that formed beneath her feet left a frozen trail in her wake, a testament to the growing intensity of her presence.

Konan led her through the entrance, where a handful of Akatsuki members gathered in the dimly lit hall. Their dark cloaks, adorned with crimson clouds, fluttered faintly as they turned their attention toward Nyx. She could feel their eyes on her, assessing, measuring. Their combined aura was suffocating—each member exuding a palpable power that felt like a storm waiting to be unleashed.

"You've made your choice," a deep voice rumbled from the shadows.

Nyx's gaze shifted to the source of the voice, where Pain stepped forward. His orange hair framed his stern face, and his Rinnegan eyes glimmered with a mix of authority and intrigue. The metal piercings across his face gleamed in the low light, giving him an almost otherworldly appearance. His presence was commanding, like a force of nature that could not be denied.

Nyx met his gaze, unflinching. "I have," she replied, her voice calm yet firm, the weight of her decision settling in her chest.

Pain studied her for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Then, with deliberate motion, he extended his hand toward her. "Welcome to the Akatsuki," he said, his voice carrying a tone of finality. "You will find that we are not just a collection of villains. We are a force for change—a force that this world needs."

Nyx hesitated for a fraction of a second before taking his hand. His grip was firm, unyielding, and as she accepted it, a sense of weight—of responsibility—settled on her shoulders. This was not just an alliance. It was a pact, a bond sealed with her willingness to walk this dangerous path.

The other members nodded in her direction, some with silent approval, others with wariness. Their gazes lingered on her, sizing her up. Nyx felt their scrutiny like a tangible pressure, but it only served to strengthen her resolve. She was no longer just a lone warrior. She was part of something much larger—an intricate web of power and ambition that stretched far beyond anything she had experienced before.

Even as she stood among them, accepted into their fold, the image of Rina flickered in her mind. Her chest tightened briefly, the memory of the young girl she had once cared for like a shadow she couldn't shake. What will she think when she learns of my choice? The thought gnawed at her, a pang of guilt cutting through her resolve. But she quickly pushed it aside. There was no room for doubt here.

Later that night, Nyx found herself atop a cliff that overlooked the vast ocean. The crashing waves below echoed the turbulence in her mind. She stood at the edge, her eyes fixed on the dark waters, allowing the salty breeze to whip through her hair. The cold, familiar air felt like an old companion, grounding her as her thoughts churned.

She didn't need to turn around to know someone had joined her. The presence was familiar, and strangely comforting.

"Nyx," came Konan's soft voice, breaking the silence. "You're here again. It seems whenever I can't find you, I know where to look."

Nyx turned to face her. Konan's figure was silhouetted against the moonlit sky, her blue hair fluttering softly in the breeze. Nyx offered a faint smile. "This place... it's calming. I can see everything—the ocean, the village. It's a good spot to think."

Konan moved beside her, sitting down gracefully on the edge of the cliff. She gazed out at the ocean, her expression peaceful. "Three years," she said after a pause, her voice laced with nostalgia. "It's hard to believe it's been three years since you arrived. You were just a kid back then, but now..." She glanced up at Nyx, a teasing smile touching her lips. "You're even an inch taller than me."

Nyx raised an eyebrow, her lips twitching upward. "You're talking like that old man."

"Are you saying I'm old?" Konan shot her a playful glare.

Nyx shook her head quickly, trying to suppress a laugh. "No, no. I mean... you're only twenty-two. I wouldn't call you old."

"Good answer." Konan chuckled softly, her eyes twinkling. "But don't compare me to that old man again."

Nyx chuckled under her breath, feeling a rare warmth bloom in her chest. Her eyes drifted to the ring on Konan's middle finger, a curious thought forming. "What's that ring you're wearing?"

Konan glanced down at the silver ring, a slight smile on her lips. "It's one of the Akatsuki's symbols. Each of us wears one. It represents where we stand, and it's used in the sealing process when we capture a tailed beast."

Nyx nodded, processing the information. "I thought it would be something... more symbolic. Like a bond or connection between all of you."

Konan's expression shifted, a flicker of thought crossing her features. She looked back at Nyx, her gaze softening. "A bond, huh?" She paused for a moment, then said quietly, "Do you want something like that? Something that represents a bond between us?"

Nyx's heart skipped a beat, her pulse quickening. She didn't know how to respond. "I—" She hesitated, feeling her cheeks warm. "I wasn't saying it like that..."

But Konan, ever perceptive, could see through Nyx's guarded demeanor. With a soft chuckle, she extended her hand and, with a subtle gesture, formed a delicate necklace out of paper. Nyx watched in silence as the paper twisted and folded, taking shape. When Konan was finished, she stepped forward and placed the necklace around Nyx's neck.

Nyx blinked, glancing down at the small pendant. A snowflake encased in a paper flower—the symbol was delicate, intricate, and beautiful. She touched it lightly, feeling a warmth spread through her.

"Here," Konan said, her voice softer now. "Something to symbolize the bond between us."

Nyx felt an unfamiliar tightness in her chest. Her fingers trembled slightly as they traced the edges of the necklace. "Since you made me one," she murmured, her voice quieter than usual, "I'll give you one too." She focused her chakra, and a necklace of shimmering ice began to form in her hands.

Nyx stepped behind Konan and gently placed the icy necklace around her neck. The ice wasn't cold—it carried a comforting, cool sensation. The pendant was a matching symbol, the same snowflake encased in the paper flower.

Konan touched the pendant with a smile. "How cute," she teased, noticing the subtle flush on Nyx's cheeks.

Nyx, flustered, looked away, but couldn't suppress a small smile. The moment felt... intimate, a rare vulnerability shared between them.

Konan gazed at Nyx with a sense of protectiveness she hadn't expected to feel so deeply. In Nyx, she saw something of herself—a girl born to be strong, but shaped by loss. Yet, there was more to it than just that. Nyx wasn't just a little sister or a protege. It was something deeper, more profound, like the fragile snowflake encased in the protective paper flower.

And Konan knew one thing for sure—she would protect Nyx, no matter what. Because, in some unspoken way, they belonged to each other now.
