Chapter 27 - Twenty seven

A few hours into the event, as the crowd began to thin out and the music grew softer, Brielle approached me once more. This time, she was alone, her usual entourage of Celine and Mia conspicuously absent. Her posture was still confident, but there was a sharpness in her eyes that hinted at something more personal.

I was standing near the edge of the ballroom, sipping on a glass of champagne and trying to look engaged in the conversations around me. Brielle's approach was unmistakable, her heels clicking assertively on the marble floor.

"Ivy," she said, her tone dripping with a barely concealed disdain, "I thought I should have a word with you."

Again? What do you even want? I turned to face her, my expression neutral. "Brielle, what can I do for you?"

Brielle's smile was tight, almost forced. "I've been meaning to ask. How is it that someone like you ended up in Alexander's circle? It must be quite the adjustment, don't you think?"

I raised an eyebrow, keeping my voice calm and composed. "I'm not sure what you mean. I'm here for Alexander and our personal reasons, and it seems to be going quite well." I conspicuously dragged on the 'personal' to give a lasting effect. I smiled in my head. I learnt the best from Rebecca.

She smirked, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Well, it's just that, from where I stand, it seems like a bit of a… leap. Don't you find it rather challenging to fit in with someone of his stature? I hear his standards are quite high."

I met her gaze steadily, refusing to let her condescension affect me. "If you're implying that I don't belong here, I'd say that's a matter of perspective. Alexander and I have a mutual understanding, and I assure you, that's more than sufficient."

Brielle's expression faltered for a brief moment, but she quickly masked it with a semblance of polite interest. "Oh, I'm sure. It must be quite the adjustment, though. Especially considering Alexander's past… and how it might affect your present."

I could sense the veiled threat in her words and decided it was time to assert myself. "I appreciate your concern, Brielle, but I assure you, I'm quite capable of handling myself. And as for Alexander's past, I think it's best if we focus on the present rather than dwelling on speculation." Speculations that didn't even make sense.

Brielle's smile faltered, and for a split second, her mask of aristocratic aloofness slipped. She glanced around, as if seeking the support of her missing companions, but found none. Her eyes flicked back to me, a mixture of surprise and irritation evident in her gaze.

"Well, Ivy," she said curtly, her voice regaining its haughty edge, "I suppose you've made your point. Enjoy the rest of the evening."

With that, she turned on her heel and walked away, her departure marked by the same confident stride she had arrived with. I watched her go, a sense of satisfaction mingled with the lingering unease of her veiled threats. I did it!

As I returned to the crowd, I couldn't help but reflect on the interaction. Brielle's attempt to undermine me had been met with a firm response, but the underlying tension between us was far from resolved. The evening was far from over, and I knew that navigating the complex dynamics of this social circle would require more than just grace—it would require vigilance and resilience.

Brielle found Celine and Mia near the grand staircase, their eyes scanning the crowd as if searching for her. As she approached them, the two girls straightened, their expressions shifting to one of attentive interest.

"Brielle!" Celine greeted, her voice laced with relief. "We've been looking for you. What's been happening?"

Brielle's face was a mask of irritation as she approached them. "I had a rather tiresome encounter with Ivy Logan," she said, her tone dripping with disdain. "She's become quite the obstacle, hasn't she?"

Mia raised an eyebrow. "Ivy? What's she done now?"

Brielle's lips twisted into a wry smile. "Oh, you know, just trying to assert her place. She had the audacity to speak to me as if she's on equal footing with Alexander and me. It's clear she's trying to ingratiate herself and prove her worth, but it's all so transparent."

Celine's eyes narrowed thoughtfully. "She's been hanging around Alexander a lot. You think she's a threat?"

"Absolutely," Brielle replied, her voice low and determined. "She's not just a mere distraction. She's a potential blockade. Her presence could make it harder for me to get closer to Alexander."

Mia's brow furrowed. "But why? It's not like Alexander seems particularly interested in her, does he?"

Brielle sighed, frustration evident in her demeanor. "It's not just about interest. It's about positioning. If Ivy manages to entrench herself in his life, it could complicate things. She's already making moves, trying to blend in and establish her place. It's a strategic maneuver, and it's something we need to be cautious about."

Celine nodded slowly, her expression thoughtful. "So, what's the plan? Do you want us to keep an eye on her?"

"Definitely," Brielle said firmly. "I need to know what she's up to and how she's maneuvering. If she's going to be a hindrance, we need to stay one step ahead. She's already proven herself to be more than just a passing interest for Alexander, so we must tread carefully."

Mia looked at Brielle with a mix of admiration and concern. "We'll keep a close watch. If there's anything we need to do to help, just let us know."

Brielle gave a grateful nod, her expression softening slightly. "Good. I appreciate it. We'll make sure that Ivy doesn't become an obstacle to my plans."

As she turned away from Celine and Mia, Brielle's mind was already racing with strategies. Ivy Logan was a complication she hadn't anticipated, but one she was determined to handle. If Ivy was a threat to her future with Alexander, then Brielle was resolved to address it—whatever it took.
