Chapter 3 - Awakening

[Ding!]

[You have obtained the Doom System]

"Huh? What is this strange floating screen?" Gojin thought, noticing that he could now see clearly through the blindfold. His confusion was evident as he stared at the screen, which appeared in his vision.

[Special ability!] Host has the special eyes from birth: [Doom]

[Ding! Reversing weak aura into EXP: 10]

"Oh, a system?" Gojin mused, a wry smile tugging at his lips. "Just like those absurd fictional stories. Well, I suppose I've been drawn into that kind of world now."

With his spirits lifted by the unexpected development, he thought, System, what's my current status? Since his mouth refused to cooperate, he had to rely solely on his thoughts.

To his surprise, the system responded almost instantly.

"Alright, that's some useful information," Gojin mused. "What about my stats, though?"

No information will be shown yet!

Host is required to reach the age of 2!

"Utter nonsense. How am I supposed to get any clarity with this?" Gojin grumbled internally, frustrated by the lack of immediate details. I need to understand my own power—what am I really capable of?

An evil grin crept across his face as he thought, Well, I'll enjoy this. I'll surpass the main character, Kenji, in strength for sure.

Just as he was contemplating his next move, Taro entered the room to check on him. Gojin, however, quickly feigned sleep.

"Oh, the little one is asleep," Taro murmured softly. "I'll miss you, Gojin. You'll be leaving the Clan when you turn five for your safety. I promise I'll protect you from the shadows."

"Who's this guy calling me 'little one'? Accepted, though. Wait, does he actually mean I'll leave the Clan at five? That's like a dream come true!" Gojin said inwardly, keeping his eyes tightly shut, though whether they were open or not was anyone's guess.

Taro, a Master Exorcist within the Clan, was renowned for his exceptional skills, though his laziness often kept him from taking part in quests. While others embarked on missions, Taro preferred the comfort of the Clan, choosing not to train as rigorously as those of a lower rank.

A few moments later, there was a knock at the door. Taro gave permission for entry without looking away from Gojin.

Two children entered, both around three years old. Ryu had short, tousled black hair and bright, inquisitive eyes, standing at about three feet tall. Yuki, slightly shorter at two and a half feet, had long, silky hair tied into pigtails and blue eyes that sparkled with cheerfulness.

"Children... how painful. They're older than me in this world, but still, they'll bow to me since I'm the strongest!" Gojin declared, determined to surpass every character in the book — or rather, being as dumb as he could. The repercussions of not having interests in fictions were really embracing him in its bosoms.

"Is this the baby?" Ryu asked, his voice calm and elegant as he turned his gaze to Gojin.

"Eh? Why is this body floating? Did I die and actually enter heaven this time? It can't be... I believe I can fly! I believe I can touch the sky! Spread my unseen wings and run away," Gojin thought in a dreamy haze as his body floated. He felt so happy, believing he was escaping this baby body so quickly.

In the blink of an eye, Gojin began floating into the air, slowly drifting toward Ryu. Yuki, quick as lightning, flicked her tiny fingers, and Gojin appeared on her arm. To Gojin's surprise, she managed to carry him with ease.

"— Eh. Oh. Damn. Bugger! I'm still here," he realised.

Ryu, growing increasingly irritated, marched over and pulled Gojin from Yuki's grasp. Yuki, not to be outdone, grabbed hold of his leg and tugged him back, resulting in a tug-of-war for Gojin's tiny form. They nearly tore him in two.

"He's mine, and I shall train him!" Yuki argued with determination.

"No, I shall! We are both men, and men should teach other men, for we understand each other!" Ryu countered, his tone firm.

"I'm starting to like this one... His name's Ryu, I suppose. Men should teach other men. — Ouch, my leg hurts..." Gojin thought, a mixture of amusement and discomfort washing over him as the two squabbled. His body, still fragile, was not built for this kind of drag contest. Slowly, his eyes began to fill with tears, though he knew how to mimic a baby's cry perfectly.

He let out a pitiful wail, hoping it would end the bickering.

Taro intervened, stepping forward to collect Gojin from their hands and place him gently back on the bed.

"You should be more careful. He's just a newborn. You can't treat him like that," Taro chided softly.

Ryu and Yuki, looking somewhat guilty, shrugged and bid Gojin farewell, exchanging intense glances as they left the room. Their rivalry was evident, their differences unresolvable.

"Thank you, Taro. I would have been torn apart," Gojin thought, relieved to be back on the bed in one piece.

Taro turned to leave the room as well, switching off the light before stepping outside.

As the door clicked shut behind him, Gojin's mind began to churn with new thoughts. His body may have been weak, but his mind was sharp, and it was beginning to plan. A grown man reincarnated into the body of a helpless infant—there's so much to learn, and so much to do. I must adapt quickly.

"I'll take notes on everything, especially since the system classified me as a side character. From what I gathered in the first three chapters, the system didn't exist in the original story. Did it bring me here? Or is there something else at play?" Gojin mused, his curiosity growing.

"This isn't just some random phenomenon. There's a hidden hand behind this, and I intend to find out who or what it is."

Suddenly, Gojin felt his strength ebbing away as a strange, thick smoke began to fill the room—a "sleep doze", a protective measure used to hide someone's aura by forcing them into a deep slumber. It was an effective, if temporary, safeguard.

Not again! Gojin thought in frustration, his consciousness fading into the haze.

Note: The system is not important in the storyline. Also, the Exorcist and soul rankings in Volume are entirely different from Volume 2 and in the ancient World [Spoiler]
