Chereads / I Was Reincarnated With Gacha Skills In Another World / Chapter 9 - The Stranger in the Mist

Chapter 9 - The Stranger in the Mist

Lucas, Finn, and Evelyn continued their journey through the dense forest after defeating the wraiths that had been stalking them. Although they had successfully overcome the previous threat, their mood remained tense. The forest around them felt increasingly dark, and a fog began to descend, covering the narrow path with a deceptively gentle softness."It seems the deeper we go, the stranger things get around here," Finn muttered, looking around warily. "I'm starting to feel like we might encounter more creepy creatures before we get out."Evelyn, who was always alert, walked in front, gripping her magic staff tightly."This is no ordinary forest," she said seriously. "There's a dark aura here. We have to be prepared for anything."Lucas nodded, although he felt a growing sense of foreboding."The sooner we get out of here, the better," he said, quickening his pace. "We have to stay focused on our goal."They continued walking along the path that was becoming increasingly blurred under the fog. The air felt colder, and the usual sounds of birds and insects had disappeared, replaced by an eerie silence. After a while, they arrived at a small open area within the forest, where the fog seemed thicker. In the middle of the area, there was an old man in a gray robe sitting on a large rock, his eyes closed as if he were meditating. The light from a gap in the trees shone softly on him, giving him an almost mystical impression."Who's that?" asked Finn, his voice a whisper. "Is he... one of the wraiths too?"Evelyn shook her head. "No, his aura is different. He's human, but there's something strange about him."Lucas, sensing that there was something important about this old man, stepped forward cautiously."We should find out who he is and what he's doing here," he said.As they approached, the old man slowly opened his eyes, as if aware of their presence from the beginning. His old blue eyes seemed piercing, as if they could see deep into someone's soul. He smiled thinly, revealing his yellowed teeth."Welcome, adventurers," said the old man in a soft but authoritative voice. "What brings you to this rarely visited place?"Lucas, although wary, decided to speak first."We're on our way to the city of Ardenia. However, this path seems more dangerous than we expected."The old man nodded slowly. "Ardenia... a fairly long destination, but not easy to reach, especially through this forest. This fog is not ordinary fog. It carries a hidden evil."Evelyn watched the old man sharply."Who are you really? And why are you here?"The old man laughed softly, a laugh that echoed in the cold air."My name is Aldric, a wanderer like yourselves. But I have lived in this place for a long time, studying the secrets hidden by this forest."Lucas furrowed his brow."What secrets do you mean? Do you know about the wraiths that attacked us earlier?"Aldric nodded slowly."Oh, of course. The Forest Wraiths are just one of many dark inhabitants that roam here. They are trapped spirits, unable to find peace because of something greater controlling this forest."Evelyn seemed interested, but also remained vigilant."What do you mean by 'something greater'?"Aldric looked at them sharply, his blue eyes seeming more serious."There is an old power within this forest, deep within the darkness. Those who dare to enter their territory often never return. And what's more worrying, this power is growing stronger."Lucas, feeling the need to know more, asked."What power are you talking about? And does it have anything to do with the missing villagers around here?"Aldric looked at Lucas with a deep and meaningful gaze."You didn't come here just by chance. Perhaps you are destined to find answers here. There are old ruins not far from here, where the dark power is centered. If you want to know more, perhaps you can start there."Finn, who was usually relaxed, now looked a little nervous."Old ruins? I'm sure that's not a tourist spot."Evelyn nodded."But we have no other choice. We have to find out what's going on, especially if there are people who need help."Lucas looked at Aldric curiously."Will you come with us? Or at least, give us more clues?"Aldric smiled thinly, as if he had already anticipated the question."I am just an observer. Your path is your own to take. However, remember, light can sometimes only be found after passing through the darkest darkness."With those words, Aldric stood up slowly and began walking towards the forest, disappearing into the thick fog that seemed to swallow him up. Lucas, Finn, and Evelyn could only look at each other with expressions of a mixture of caution and determination."It seems we have no other choice," said Lucas. "We have to go to those ruins and find out what's really going on."Evelyn nodded.

"Right. We can't just leave this mystery unsolved."

Finn swallowed nervously, trying to gather his courage.

"Alright, buddy. If it's an adventure we're looking for, then here we go."

They continued their journey more cautiously, following the clues given by Aldric. The path led them deeper into the forest, toward a darker and more secluded area. Every step felt heavy, as if the forest itself resisted their advance.

After a while, they saw the tops of stone ruins in the distance, hidden within the thickening shadows of the forest. Lucas could feel a strange energy emanating from the place, like an invisible pressure weighing on their chests.

"There," Evelyn whispered, her eyes carefully scanning every detail. "That must be the place."

As they approached, Lucas felt a buzzing in his ears, and faint whispers began to echo once again.

"Be careful," he said, raising his sword. "I feel like we're not alone."

They reached the ruins, and with bated breath, entered the stone complex overgrown with vines and moss. In the center of the ruins stood an old altar, surrounded by ancient symbols glowing faintly.

"This place… feels alive," Finn whispered, his eyes darting around nervously. "And not in a good way."

Evelyn stepped closer to the altar, squinting as she tried to decipher the symbols.

"This is ancient magic… something very old and powerful. I can feel its energy resonating."

Suddenly, a rumbling sound echoed from beneath the ground, and the stone floor started to shake. Rocks began to fall, and from the shadows of the ruins emerged a massive creature with glowing red eyes. Its body was black and smoky, with long, branch-like arms that swung menacingly. The creature's howl sent chills down their spines.

"Get ready!" Lucas shouted, raising his sword. "This won't be easy!"

The creature swung its branch-like arm at them with terrifying speed. Lucas and Finn quickly dodged to the side, while Evelyn raised a magical shield in front of them. Though it softened the blow, the impact was strong enough to shatter part of the shield and push them backward.

"This won't be easy!" Lucas yelled, swinging his sword swiftly. He tried to strike the creature with a Blazing Slash, but each time his attack hit, the smoky body seemed to absorb most of the damage.

"Its attacks are strong, but its body is like mist! We need to find another way to defeat it!"

Evelyn focused her energy and chanted steadily.

"Aether Blast!"

A bright blue light shot from her staff, striking the creature directly in the chest. The creature staggered back, and for a moment, the black mist around its body thinned. However, the mist quickly enveloped it again.

"We need a different strategy!" Finn shouted, sprinting to avoid another swing of the creature's arm that tried to grab him. "Regular attacks aren't strong enough!"

Lucas racked his brain for another idea. His eyes landed on the altar in the middle of the ruins, where the ancient symbols glowed faintly.

"Maybe it has something to do with that altar," he thought. "If that's the source of its power, we have to destroy it."

"Evelyn!" Lucas called out, continuing to attack the creature with quick strikes, trying to distract it. "Can you read those symbols on the altar? Maybe there's a way to weaken it!"

Evelyn nodded quickly and rushed toward the altar. Her hands brushed over the surface of the ancient stone, trying to understand the energy it radiated.

"This... it's a seal," she said. "This seal seems to be channeling dark energy into this creature. If we can break the seal, we might be able to weaken it!"

Lucas and Finn exchanged glances.

"Alright, we'll try to hold it off while you take care of the seal," Lucas said firmly.

Finn threw several throwing knives with incredible accuracy, trying to divert the creature's attention. Meanwhile, Lucas slashed with Blazing Slash, creating a circle of fire around the creature, hoping to keep it in place.

The creature howled angrily, its glowing red eyes locking onto Evelyn as she stood by the altar. It swung its massive arm toward her, but Lucas quickly jumped in front of the attack, using his body as a shield. He activated Cloak of Shadows, disappearing instantly, confusing the creature as its arm swung through thin air.

"Finn, get over here!" Lucas called from within the mist. "We need to attack together!"

Finn leaped skillfully toward the creature, bouncing off the rubble, getting closer to the creature's head from above.

"Let's do this, buddy!" he yelled as he threw his last knife straight into the creature's eye. The knife pierced deeply, causing the creature to roar in pain and lower its head.

As the creature staggered, Lucas reappeared from the mist and slashed his sword with a Blazing Slash aimed directly at the creature's chest. The fiery attack left a large gash in its torso, tearing through the smoky body and exposing a dark core inside.

Evelyn, having deciphered the symbols on the altar, began chanting a destruction spell with great power.

"By the ancient light, disperse the shadows! Dispel Seal!"

A bright golden light erupted from her staff, shooting straight toward the altar and enveloping the ancient symbols on it.

The altar trembled violently, and the faintly glowing symbols started to crack and fade. The seal shattered with a loud cracking sound that echoed through the ruins, and the dark energy surrounding them seemed to be sucked away into the air.

The massive creature let out a deafening roar, its body shuddering and slowly dissipating into thinning black smoke. Without the seal feeding it energy, the creature lost its strength and finally vanished completely, leaving behind an eerie silence in the ruins.

The three of them panted heavily, feeling the tension slowly fade.

"We did it…" Lucas said, lowering his sword. He felt relieved, but also knew this was only the beginning of something much bigger.

Evelyn, still holding her staff, gave a faint smile.

"We couldn't have done it without teamwork. You both played your parts well."

Finn clapped Lucas on the shoulder cheerfully.

"I don't know about you, buddy, but I feel like we've had enough training for one day."

Lucas chuckled softly.

"Yeah, I agree. But we still don't know what really happened here."

Evelyn walked over to the now shattered altar, examining the remaining pieces of stone.

"This altar might be just one of many places in this forest. There's still a greater darkness at work, perhaps deeper within or elsewhere."

Suddenly, a familiar voice spoke from the mist surrounding them.

"You did well," Aldric said, emerging from the shadows as if he had witnessed everything. "But you're right. This is just the beginning."

Lucas turned to him warily.

"Aldric... was this all just a test for you?"

Aldric smiled faintly, his blue eyes glowing softly.

"Maybe. But it was also a lesson for you. This darkness isn't something to be taken lightly. If you truly want to protect this world, you'll need to be prepared for much more."

Evelyn eyed Aldric closely.

"What do you mean? Do you know more about what's happening?"

Aldric nodded slowly.

"There's an old story, a forgotten legend about ancient beings awakening from their long slumber. And the signs of their return are beginning to show."

Lucas stared at him intently. "So, this isn't just about a lost village or these ruins. It's much bigger than that."

"Exactly," Aldric replied. "But that's a tale for another time. For now, you should continue your journey. Perhaps you'll find more answers in the city of Ardenia."

Finn sighed.

"We're getting caught in a bigger conspiracy."

Lucas smiled.

"We've come too far. We're not turning back now."

Evelyn nodded in agreement.

"Let's head to Ardenia. Maybe there we'll find more clues."

Aldric simply smiled as they prepared to continue their journey. "Be careful, adventurers. And may luck always be on your side."
