Akari sat on her bed, staring at the leather-bound diary in her hands. The faint scent of ink and parchment filled the air as she hesitated to open it. With a deep breath, she flipped to the first page, her heart pounding as she began to read.
---
First Entry
Today a weird girl came with the duke. She's beautiful... I think I like her. She has unique powers.
Akari blinked, her cheeks heating up. "Weird? Really, Arnold? That's your first impression?" she muttered under her breath, but she couldn't help smiling softly.
---
Second Entry
It was decided that I will live with the duke and her—meaning Akari—and Kuro. Akari is so funny and good. I guess I have a big crush on her.
Her lips twitched, remembering how Arnold used to trip over himself trying to impress her back then. "A big crush, huh? That explains the awkward stares."
---
Third Entry
I know I like her now, but I think Kuro does too. So I asked him first. He denied it, then accepted it. This competition is gonna be tough.
Akari's brows shot up. "Wait... they had a discussion about me?" She frowned but then chuckled. "Of course, those two dorks turned it into some weird competition."
---
Fourth Entry
We entered the academy. We're dorm fellows. Every day with Akari feels like heaven. Should I confess my feelings? Can I?
She paused, her chest tightening. "You could have, Arnold... I might've said yes sooner," she whispered, her fingers brushing the edge of the page.
---
Fifth Entry
Akari mistakenly pecked me on the lips when she was trying to kiss my cheek for a dare. But then Kuro kissed her, too. I'm kinda jealous, but she kissed me willingly. Even if Kuro wins her over, I won't be upset. He likes her too, and I think she deserves happiness.
Akari covered her face, groaning. "Why did I have to be so clumsy? .. Stop making it sound so dramatic, Arnold!"
---
Sixth Entry
My brother died, and Akari isn't here either. I miss them. I'm lonely. I wish I could see her again.
Her smile faded, the ache of loss creeping into her chest. She pressed her palm against the page. "I'm so sorry I wasn't there, Arnold... I wish I could've been."
---
Seventh Entry
I met her again after two years, and she confessed to me. I am so happy I can't even control my heart. OMG, I am so happy. She's going to be mine.
A tear rolled down her cheek as she laughed softly. "You and your 'OMG,' Arnold. You were such a sap."
---
Eighth Entry
I'm sad for Kuro. He has distanced himself from us.
She frowned, the guilt creeping in. "I guess none of us handled that situation well, huh?"
---
Ninth Entry
Kuri came into our lives. Even though Kuro and Akari are her official parents, I'm kinda jealous that even fate wants them together. But still, it's okay, isn't it?
Akari gasped. "Fate?! Arnold, you dramatic fool. You knew Kuri wasn't planned!" She laughed but wiped at her eyes, unable to stop the flow of emotions.
---
Final Night Entry
I miss her. The war is going on, but it's okay. Tomorrow I'm going to meet her.
Her hands trembled as she turned to the letter tucked into the back of the diary. She unfolded it carefully, her eyes scanning the familiar handwriting.
---
The Letter
Akari, if I die, you can go with Kuro. He loves you. And remember, I loved you too and will always love you, no matter who you choose or who you are. Love is when you're happy about their happiness.
P.S.: Don't be mad at Kuro. He's dumb but loyal. And if he ever makes you cry, haunt him for me.
---
Akari clutched the diary to her chest, laughing and crying at the same time. "You ridiculous, selfless, amazing idiot," she whispered, her heart aching and full all at once.
Suddenly, Kuro knocked and entered, looking concerned. "You okay? You've been in here for hours."
Akari wiped her tears quickly but couldn't hide her smile. "Yeah, I'm okay... He really was the best, wasn't he?"
Kuro tilted his head, confused. "Who? Me?"
She threw a pillow at him. "No, you doofus! Arnold!"
"Hey, I can be the best too!" Kuro protested, grinning.
Akari shook her head, laughing. "You better be, or Arnold will haunt you."
For the first time in a long while, her laughter was genuine, and her heart felt just a little lighter.
