Chapter 13 - Fragments Of Forgotten

The sun had dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and deep purple. The training grounds were bathed in the soft, fading light, casting elongated shadows over the rugged terrain. Exhausted from another day of grueling exercises, I found a large rock to sit on, my muscles throbbing with every movement.

Zhal, ever composed, stood a short distance away, his silhouette etched against the twilight. As I tried to catch my breath, my thoughts drifted back to the rune and the unanswered questions it brought.

After a moment of silence, I turned to him, my curiosity getting the better of me. "Zhal, can we talk about the rune again?"

Zhal looked up, his expression unreadable but attentive. "Of course. What do you need to know?"

"I still don't understand much about it," I said, frustration creeping into my voice. "You mentioned it's an ancient artifact with immense power, but you didn't go into detail about what that power is or its purpose. Can you elaborate?"

Zhal's gaze grew thoughtful as he settled onto a nearby rock. "The rune you carry is indeed part of a forgotten history. Its origins are deeply intertwined with my heritage and the ancient tales passed down through generations."

"What do you mean by 'forgotten history'?" I asked, leaning closer, intrigued.

"Long ago, there was a time when knowledge about such artifacts was more widely known," Zhal explained. "However, as centuries passed, much of that knowledge was lost. The rune is a remnant of that era, a fragment of a once-great understanding that has since faded into obscurity."

"So, the power of the rune is lost to history?" I inquired.

"In a way," Zhal said. "What remains of its history speaks of immense power, but the specifics are not fully understood. What we know is that the rune was significant enough to be preserved through the ages, though its exact function and potential remain unclear."

I nodded, absorbing his words. "So, it's a part of your heritage? How does that relate to me?"

"Yes," Zhal confirmed. "My people have always known about the rune, but the knowledge of its true nature has been obscured over time. The rune's importance was a key element in our past, and its legacy is part of our history. When I saw you with the rune, it was a reminder of that lost heritage and the significance it once held."

"Does that mean I'm part of this heritage too?" I asked, a sense of curiosity and unease mingling in my chest.

"Perhaps," Zhal said, his gaze steady. "The rune has chosen you for a reason, though its purpose for you is not yet clear. What is important is that you understand the weight of carrying it and the potential it holds. The past is a guide, but the future is yours to shape."

I sat in contemplation, the mystery of the rune deepening with Zhal's explanation. The artifact was more than just a source of power; it was a link to a forgotten past and an integral part of Zhal's heritage.

"Thank you for explaining," I said, feeling a bit more at ease despite the lingering uncertainty.

Zhal gave a nod of acknowledgment. "Rest for now. Tomorrow's training will be just as demanding. The journey you're on is not just about physical strength but also about uncovering the truths that lie hidden."

As twilight enveloped the landscape, I felt a renewed sense of purpose. The rune was a piece of a larger puzzle, and with Zhal's guidance, I was determined to unravel its secrets and fulfill the role it had set for me.
