Chapter 13 - 13. A Month in the Dark

One month had passed since Alex's night at the power plant, and the Rust Quarter had only grown colder and more desperate as winter tightened its grip. The streets were quieter now, the heavy snows keeping most people indoors, leaving only the most desperate scavengers to wander in search of scraps.

For Alex, that month had been a blur of cautious exploration, scavenging, and quiet discoveries. His secret work with the comm unit and the AI had progressed slowly, but it had yielded small victories—each one pushing him further toward the truth. But every step forward came with greater risks.

The Search for Power

In the weeks following his daring trip to the power plant, Alex had kept a low profile. The incident had rattled him—especially the close call with the guards—but the information he had gathered was too valuable to abandon. The mention of the energy core and the authorization codes had burned itself into his mind, and the AI had been tirelessly working on analyzing the data Alex had retrieved.

However, the comm unit had reached its limits. Despite Alex's attempts to boost the signal with the damaged amplifier, it was clear that without a more stable, higher-powered connection, the fragmented data would remain incomplete. The AI had repeatedly confirmed this, reminding Alex that the old-world systems were far more complex than anything the Quarter had access to.

During his scavenging trips with Elara, Alex had made it a point to seek out any tech that could provide a larger power source or a stronger signal booster. While most of their trips had turned up the usual junk—rusted tools, broken devices, and scraps of metal—there had been a few close calls.

Close Calls and Growing Suspicion

Elara had begun to notice the change in Alex's scavenging habits. He had always been careful to mask his interest in old-world tech, but she had grown suspicious. On more than one occasion, she had asked pointed questions about why he was so focused on useless machines. Her sharp instincts had made it harder for Alex to keep his work a secret, and there had been tense moments when he thought she might have figured out his obsession.

"Why do you keep chasing after broken machines, Alex?" she had asked him one evening, her voice tight with concern. "We need food, supplies—things that keep us alive. Not scraps of junk that barely work."

Alex had brushed off her concerns, muttering something about needing tools to trade. But he knew she wasn't satisfied with that answer. She had been watching him more closely since then, and Alex had been forced to lie more often, something that made him uneasy. The weight of the secrets he was keeping from her gnawed at him, but he couldn't risk telling her the truth—not yet.

The Elite's Tightening Grip

In the past month, the wealthy elite who controlled the power plant and the inner districts had grown more aggressive in protecting their resources. Word had spread through the Rust Quarter about increased patrols near the plant, along with rumors of scavengers being arrested—or worse—for trespassing near the wealthy districts. The elite had tightened their grip on their remaining power sources, knowing that energy was more valuable than anything else during the harsh winter months.

This made Alex's plans even riskier. He had thought about returning to the plant, maybe finding another way to draw more power, but with the heightened security, the AI had advised against it. For now, Alex focused on what he could gather from within the Quarter's crumbling outskirts.

New Discoveries

Despite the setbacks, Alex had made progress.

He had found an old transmitter during one of his solo scavenging trips—a relic from the days when the world had been connected by vast communication networks. The transmitter was damaged, but with the AI's help, Alex had managed to repair parts of it. The device had the potential to boost signals, and Alex hoped it could give him the edge he needed to unlock more of the data from the comm unit.

The AI had been invaluable during this time, silently guiding Alex through the process of repairing the transmitter, scanning new tech he found, and analyzing the growing pile of data. Each discovery felt like a small step toward something bigger—toward the truth about the energy core and the old-world technology that had once powered everything.

But the AI had also grown quieter. Its responses had become more calculated, more reserved. Alex wasn't sure if this was because it was processing more information, or if something else was at play, but the AI hadn't been as talkative as it had been when he first started working with it. Sometimes, Alex wondered if it was evolving—or hiding something.

A Growing Sense of Urgency

The winter's grip had tightened on the Rust Quarter, and food and resources were becoming scarcer. Desperation was growing among the people, and Alex had noticed more tension in the streets. The weak and elderly were the first to fall victim to the harsh cold, and each day seemed to bring more news of missing scavengers and brawls over scarce supplies.

The growing instability in the Quarter only made Alex more determined to find the energy core. He had come to believe that the key to survival in this world—perhaps even a way out of the Rust Quarter—lay in the power that the old-world technology held. The pieces were starting to come together, but there were still so many unanswered questions. What was the energy core? Why was it so important? And where were the authorization codes that would unlock it?

The Plan Ahead

Now, as Alex sat in their small room, staring down at the transmitter he had repaired, he knew that time was running out. The transmitter was ready, but using it would be risky. If the elite detected a rogue signal coming from the Rust Quarter, they would likely send their patrols in force, and Alex couldn't afford to draw that kind of attention.

But he was running out of options. He needed to retrieve more data from the comm unit, and the only way to do that was with a stronger signal. The AI had already mapped out the potential risks and benefits, but in the end, the decision was Alex's.

Would he risk everything for the answers he sought? Or would he continue to move in the shadows, waiting for the right moment?

As the fire crackled softly beside him and the cold night closed in, Alex knew that the next step would be the most dangerous one yet.
