Chapter 20 - The Silent Aftermath

Kenji staggered to his feet, his muscles aching from the fierce battle. His eyes locked onto Taro's crumpled form, lying motionless on the ground. Steeling himself, he approached and knelt beside his fallen comrade. Taro's breathing was shallow, his body battered and bruised from the brutal fight with Azamuku.

Kenji knew he had to act fast. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a small piece of paper etched with ancient symbols. This was no ordinary healing spell—it was one that accelerated the body's natural healing processes, a technique passed down through generations of hunters. He carefully placed the paper on Taro's chest, then formed a series of complex hand seals, his fingers moving with practiced precision.

The paper began to glow faintly, its light spreading across Taro's body, mending wounds at a rapid pace. Within moments, Taro's eyes snapped open, filled with confusion and a hint of fear.

"What happened? How am I awake?" Taro's voice was raspy, barely above a whisper.

Kenji offered a tired smile. "I used a spell to heal you, but it's not a complete solution. The spell speeds up your body's healing, but it also puts a lot of stress on you. It's only a matter of time before you pass out again."

Taro's expression shifted from confusion to understanding, but before he could respond, his body gave out, and he slipped back into unconsciousness.

Kenji sighed and stood, his thoughts drifting back to the events that had led them to this point. The dire situation on the island had been escalating, and an emergency message had been sent to headquarters, alerting them of the overwhelming number of demons and the hunters' struggle to hold their ground.

It wasn't long before reinforcements were dispatched. Kenji had been present when the call for aid came, and despite the dangers, he insisted on joining the mission. The decision had weighed heavily on him, but he knew he couldn't abandon his comrades in their time of need.

Now, in the aftermath of the battle, the forest was eerily silent. The once lively battleground was a somber scene, littered with the bodies of fallen hunters and demons alike. The survivors moved slowly, some tending to the wounded, others gathering the dead. The air was thick with the scent of blood and smoke, a grim reminder of the price they had paid.

As the sun began to rise on the horizon, casting a dim light over the devastated landscape, Kenji found himself reflecting on the gravity of the situation. The battle had been brutal, and the losses were severe. The fight had taken everything out of them, but Kenji knew they had no choice but to press on.

The hunters gathered around, their faces weary but determined. They tended to the wounded, cleared the battlefield of the fallen, and prepared for whatever came next.
