The moment I lost control, I knew Leslie felt it too. It hit me like a wave, the overwhelming, suffocating pull of darkness surging through me. One moment, I had the darkness at my command, bending to my will, using it to my advantage. The next, it was consuming me, pulling me under like a black tide, and I could feel it gnawing at the edges of my mind. A cold panic gripped me—if I didn't act fast, I could hurt someone. Worse, I could hurt her.
I knew Leslie would sense it. She would feel the shift in me through our bond, and she would come to me, worried, wanting to know if I was okay. I couldn't let that happen. Not now. Not when I was on the verge of losing myself completely. The darkness that had been a tool in my arsenal had turned on me, and I wasn't sure if I could wrest control back in time. It was suffocating, clawing at my soul, and I feared that when it overtook me, it would make me do something unforgivable.
