CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE
As night descended, the black cat appeared in the house, its piercing eyes gleaming like lanterns in the darkness.
The silence was shattered when the playful puppy, bought to console Cherry after she couldn't find the cat, caught sight of the feline intruder.
The puppy's eyes blazed, shining like stars in the night.
Its ears perked up, and a low, rumbling growl built in its chest.
"Awooo!" The puppy's bark exploded into a frenzied chorus, its paws pounding the floor as it zeroed in on the cat.
The cat's startled meow sliced through the air as it sprinted for cover, its tail twitching wildly on high speed.
The puppy hotly pursued, its tiny legs moving at lightning speed.
Around the room they tore with a whirlwind of fur and energy.
Furniture scraped against the floor as they zigzagged through the chaos.
The cat leapt onto the couch, then sprang to the windowsill, desperate to evade its relentless pursuer.
The puppy skidded to a stop beneath the window, its barks growing more.
The cat's eyes flashed with fear.
The cat sprinted past the cushion once more and darted up the stairs, its paws barely touching the steps.
The puppy followed, its tail wagging wildly.
As the cat glanced back, its eyes widened in alarm – the puppy was still gaining ground.
They reached the hallway leading to Amy's room.
Water glistened on the marble floor, and a maid was busy mopping up the spill.
In an instant, the cat's paws flew out from under it.
The feline body slid across the slick floor, landing upside down with a startled meow.
The cat's legs flailed wildly as it rolled, its fur ruffled in every direction.
The puppy watched, mesmerized, its eyes locked onto its slippery prey and the puppy wanted to follow and collided with the maid.
The maid, caught off guard, stumbled backward and her mop slipped from her grasp.
"Ah no!" she cried.
The maid swiftly intervened, swooping in to intercept the puppy's frenzied chase.
"Gotcha!" she exclaimed, scooping up Ruby in a gentle-strong grasp.
"I've been hearing your ruckus all over the house, Ruby.
What's gotten into you?" The maid cooed, scrutinizing the puppy's excited face.
Ruby wriggled and licked the maid's face, still fixated on the cat's elusive form.
Unbeknownst to the maid, the cat had vanished into thin air, leaving no trace.
The maid was oblivious to the cat's presence.
"Time to calm down, little one," she soothed.
She then went to Amy's room, announcing her presence with a gentle ring of the doorbell.
Cherry opened the door, her sleepy eyes squinting against the hallway's bright lights.
The maid stood before her, cradling Ruby.
"Ma'am, your puppy was running around the house. I'm not sure what triggered it, so I brought it to you." The maid explained.
Cherry yawned, stretching her arms above her head. "Okay, thanks. Just put it inside."
As the maid released Ruby into the room, the cat appeared from the shadows, its eyes locked onto the puppy.
The maid, oblivious to the feline presence, bid Cherry a quick goodbye with a nod and left.
The moment the door closed, Ruby's gaze snapped onto the cat.
Their eyes met, and the cat widened in alarm.
With a yelp, Ruby finally wanted to jump on the cat and tear it off. But by the time it jumped on it, it couldn't hold a grasp of the cat.
She had no choice but to frolic and wiggle around it, her tiny paws tapping against the floor with its mild bark.
"Awhoo."
"Quiet Ruby!
The cat disappeared.
What's gotten into you?" Cherry asked as she gently scooped up the puppy.
She settled Ruby into bed beside her, stroking the puppy's soft fur.
"Sleep, Ruby," she whispered.
Just as Ruby's eyelids began to droop, a soft meow pierced the silence.
Cherry's hand paused mid-stroke.
"When did you start imitating cat sounds, Ruby?" she teased, chuckling.
Another meow responded, louder and more insistent.
Cherry's eyes widened as realization dawned. The sound wasn't coming from Ruby.
She turned around and scanned the room. The meow grew louder, originating from the foot of the bed.
Her thoughts were right.
"The black cat!" Cherry silently exclaimed.
The cat's piercing green eyes locked onto Cherry's, its tail twitching.
"Meow," the cat repeated, with a low and husky voice.
Ruby's high-pitched yips filled the air as she attempted to pounce on the cat.
But before she could reach it, the cat suddenly poofed into a swirling golden dust.
Cherry's eyes widened in astonishment.
As the dust settled, a light illuminated the room, casting a glow.
When the light faded, a figure stood before Cherry, its features slowly taking shape.
The black cat had transformed into a human
"I have been waiting for this moment," the being declared with a mysterious voice.
Cherry recoiled with fear
"What are you?" she stammered.
The shining light dimmed, revealing the being's face.
Cherry stared onto its features, and her breath caught.
