Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

As the Meteor got closer to earth it's energy surges interfered with the artificial satellites around the planet, it happened all at the same time triggering a response from different Astronomy bodies and research organizations all over the planet, including National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Using a new and much advanced telescope, scientists at NASA peeped into space only to discover the speeding meteor headed for earth and sadly it was already nearing it's upper atmosphere.

Immediately, an alarm went off as they began to inform every station and nation of the danger and calamity that approached Earth. In mere moments they reached Fury, the American Army Commander and General.

"Sir, there massive meteor headed for Earth and it's about to enter our upper atmosphere anytime now," said the lead scientist at NASA on phone with Fury. Fury on his seat enjoying a cup of Americano almost spat it out after hearing the news. He dropped his coffee onto the desk widening his eyes as they locked onto a corner in the room.

He immediately got up and the American main base set off an alarm. People were running helter skelter, speeding all over like ants, helpless against the magnitude of death that approached in the form of a speeding space rock.

At the main radio room of the American military base, the general got some of their best military weapon engineers and scientists. They were completely confused and disorderly as they tried to make sense of what was before them. In their futile attempts to come up with an impromptu solution to the man swatter that approached, most of them had started giving up, basically just pretending to shuffle papers over and over to seem busy but what could they do.

One of the main problems with this meteor is the energy surges it released came out in the form of electromagnetic waves that basically messed with any electronic around it, it was a giant electromagnetic pulse device. The issue with that would be most of the army's missiles were remotely controlled using computers, meaning they were electronic devices. If at any point any of them got close to the meteor they would be shut down by the electromagnetic pulses it released. This would just cause more problems since now they would not only have a meteor to deal with but bombs dropping on civilians. Lazer guided missles were not safe either, at that point in time, it seemed like nothing could be done, until...

The general had an idea, two actually. One was to contact an elite group of superheroes called the Modern Warriors. After a couple of futile attempts to reach them however, he gave up, their leader was not accepting any calls from Fury. The other option, which he didn't necessarily like it but he had no choice but to call her, Yui Nakamura, the Metal Knight.

"Get me on the phone with Metal Knight right!" He demanded as a connection was created between them and Yui who was well aware of the impending doom but was at the safety of her company that was miles away from New York. At the same time she had also sent a bionic suit that would get to the city and rescue her daughter by taking her to safety just before the meteorite would hit.

"Take her to my penthouse in Hawaii, if she dies...I'll probably just make another one but I'll turn you into a dishwasher at that," she said to a hollow suit and sent it on its way to take Jordan to safety.

In her office, her monitor switches on, and the general appears. She has a smirk on her face as she knew they would crawl to her begging as soon as such a calamity struck, and in her favor this meteor could not have shown up any sooner.

"Good afternoon Fury," she said smiling as she crossed her legs leaning back on her office chair. She signaled Arrya to leave her office with her hand.

"That's General to you Miss, you're aware of the meteorite headed for New York, aren't you?" Asked the general.

"Meteorite? What meteorite?" She asked crossing her fingers together acting oblivious and not at the same time. The general didn't like it one bit but then again, New York was at her mercy. He could not speak to her however he wanted, especially since he had no other option and she was the kind to only help those who would pay favors back. It was always transactional with her.

"Fuck! People are going to die Nakamura, if you are truly the hero you claim to be, get us out of this mess!" yelled the general who was desperate and enraged by her sarcasm, "Look, do it and...you have the army's investment."

Yui smiled pleased with herself before speaking, "That meteor, of course general. I'll get to it immediately, and for the record, I'm a hero, I would've done it regardless. Now if you'd excuse me, I need to suit up, I have a meteor to destroy."

As she said this, she disconnected her communication with the general. She then smiled mischievously completely pleased with herself. It was so convenient that immediately after her meeting with her investors she had already won majority of them over without even trying. Taking care of a meteor more over to her would be a piece of cake. Just put on her technologically sophisticated armor and blast it to smithereens, or would she.

Why would she, the brilliant and spotless 'goddess' that she was put herself through the trouble of actually combating the meteorite, at least head on. This however was the perfect opportunity for her to use morality and self righteousness as propaganda to not only sway the government but also the 'worlds' citizens or to be more specific, Americans, that she was in fact the selfless heroine that she claimed to be.

"NAI, send twenty five MK 2s for direct course at that meteorite, and one MK 2 prime, add my signature and radio connection to it. Soon as its done navigate it back to me," said Yui as she poured herself a glass of wine. She shook the glass gently before taking a sip.

"Affirmative, madam," responded 'her' self sufficient and ever updating and upgrading artificial intelligence. It had the voice of a man, spoke to her with gentleness and slight submission, yet a certain level of emotionlessness could be detected. This was mostly because much as artificial intelligence could mimic us, our emotions come from our consciousness and souls, not an amalgam of ones and zeros. She rolled her eyes slightly, as if disappointed by it doing exactly what she wanted it to do, the poor machine.

In her robot hanger, multiple suits of hers switched on. Their eyes glowed a whitish-blue before ejecting from their slots and taking a few steps forward before blasting off. They flew away blasting into the sky before the last, a suit matching the one she used to combat Pete. it followed suit behind the others, all headed for the meteorite.

Meanwhile, back at New York people hand already been informed of the danger approaching. It was madness and chaos. People running all over the place in an attempt to rescue their individual lives. A woman pushing a man on a wheel chair left him by himself, he seemed crippled and could do nothing but watch his probable spouse dump him. Others running bumped into his chair shoving him off of it and onto the ground. Mothers and fathers carrying their children as they run, some leaving them behind. In these dire moments, the true nature of humanity and this organism that is life can truly be seen. The innate selfishness that defines who we are at our core, displayed at different points of its spectrum.

This selfishness that was so vast and concentrated within us that motorists were casually running over pedestrians just to try and escape this impending doom, regardless of the fact that they stood at the potent bull's eye of impact. Some having realized it was merely hopeless, broke down in terror, expressing silent and paralyzing dread. Others, the religious and fanatics knelt to their knees and prayed to whatever mythology they believed in. To such, it was quite spiritual, their idea of rapture. There was also a fraction that began jumping off of buildings, a police officer took her gun out of its holster and blasted her brains out, it was quite the fascinating petri dish, to see the psychological difference between different individuals.

Finally, Yui's shells arrived to the party just in time as the collapsing disco ball became even more vivid to the dancers underneath it. At the same time the suit she had sent to take her daughter to safety also found her. After a few seconds of gliding over the swarm of humans, it spotted her at the shelter that Jordan and Jude were previously conversing. He was hugging her and her him, the two having seemingly already accepted their fates, and instead of spending their last moments fruitlessly and desperately trying to survive, they chose to embrace each other. The robot however was not at all touched, neither did it at all care for Jude. In fact to it, Jude was a nigh inanimate obstacle, it dropped down to them so fast crushing a woman's skull, she was like the rest squeezing through the hordes of crowds.

It's arrival, messy as it was stunned Jude for a moment who barely had time to react before it grabbed Jordan and pulled her from him. As he was stretching and dashing for her it caught his right hand with its right while holding the screaming Jordan with its left. The grasp on Jude's hand was so powerful it crushed his hand as if it was boneless. Blood from the amalgam of flesh and bone oozing through the crevices left by the spaces in between the machines fingers. Before Jude could wail in pain it slapped him so hard he was thrown back slamming onto the thick door behind him before bouncing back and falling in front of the machine.

"Secure Jordan Nakamura at all costs," uttered the machine before throwing her about ten feet into the air, she was still screaming the whole time. The suit then burst into multiple pieces that quickly dashed at her and reconstructed themselves on her skin and clothes covering her like armor. It then immediately flew away, inside the suit, Jordan was screaming trying to break out but it was metal armor powered and programmed, she stood no chance.

The first wave of Yui's robots, the twenty five intercepted and blocked the meteorites trajectory. At this point it was merely a kilometer up. The robots then dashed at the meteorite and slowly, each got a grip of it from its mini craters and cracks. They then increased the thrust coming from their boots as they pushed the meteorite in the opposite direction to counter its forward motion. It seemed futile since as much as the meteorite was gradually slowing down it would still make impact and kill the many. However this was a calculated act, they did this because at its initial velocity, though gradually decelerating due to the drag force acting on it due to the atmospheric air, the momentum would be enough to cause a miniature dinosaur doom's day device. Much as their combined efforts greatly reduced the range calamity. It was however not enough, they would not be strong enough to stop it and take it to a nonpopulated location.

Still, NAI was relatively prepared, the final suit or robot or whatever...arrived and about three hundred meters from the meteorite, it stopped mid air gliding and fused its arms into a giant blaster that gradually glowed whitish-blue becoming ever so bright by the second. It was charging up an energy beam as it aimed its blaster at the meteorite. It then released the pent up attack sending it like a stream of light. From a distance it looked like a laser pointer had hit something. The clash was great and shattered the rock into dust and debris.

One problem had been solved and millions of other minor created in the form of an approximated infinite number of pieces of space rocks. The suits holding it were tossed aside and away by the shockwave released by the collision between the blast and the meteorite, while the MK 2 prime got smacked by one of them so hard is had a straight course for the ground underneath.. Most of them crushed into buildings while some fell down to the ground and some on civilians, they were not all that fell as the debris followed in different sizes. People were at random getting crushed, one could not tell which fate was worse, a football sized rock dropping on your head, molten space rock melting your face off or a rock the size of a car flattening you and your adjacent neighbors from all four cardinal directions whole.

One of the smaller ones, of radius approximately a foot, fell on Jude who was still recuperating from the beating he had received from the MK 2. He was barely on his feet when it tackled him into the building he was under head on. The debris dug into building, some fell on cars, some rolled over people leaving a trail of steaming human guts, some fell on trees and some on animals.

It was chaos and random but instant death.
