Chapter 1 - lockdown begins

Ella stared at the screen, her eyes tired from hours of virtual classes. The lockdown had turned her world upside down. School, once a place of bustling energy and social interaction, was now a series of monotonous Zoom calls. Her bedroom had become both classroom and sanctuary, and she felt the walls closing in.

"Ella, can you come down for a moment?" her mother, Sarah, called from downstairs.

Ella sighed and pushed her chair away from her desk. "Coming!" She rubbed her eyes and trudged down the stairs. Sarah was at the kitchen table, her laptop open and papers scattered around.

"Can you help me with these documents?" Sarah asked. "I'm swamped with work. It's been nonstop."

Ella took a seat across from her mother. "Sure, Mom. I was just trying to finish my history assignment."

Sarah glanced at Ella with a tired smile. "I know it's tough for you too. I wish we could all just go back to normal."

Ella nodded, her thoughts drifting to her friends. She missed Maya's loud laughter and Ryan's endless energy. Her younger brother, Ryan, was around somewhere, probably engaged in his latest mischief. "I miss school," Ella admitted. "And I wish we could go outside."

"I know, honey," Sarah said, looking down at her papers. "But we have to stay safe. It's important."

Ella's phone buzzed on the table. It was a message from Maya: "Hey, how's the lockdown treating you? Can't wait to catch up!"

Ella typed back quickly: "Same here. It's so boring. We should video call later."

Sarah looked up. "Your friends must miss you too. Video calls are good, but they're not quite the same."

Ella agreed, feeling a pang of loneliness. "Yeah, I know. It's hard not being able to hang out in person."

After helping Sarah with the documents, Ella returned to her room. She decided to tidy up the attic, a task she had been putting off for weeks. The attic was cluttered with old boxes and forgotten items. As she rummaged through a dusty box marked "Miscellaneous," her hand brushed against something hard and leather-bound. Curiosity piqued, she pulled it out and wiped off the dust.

It was an old, weathered diary. The cover was embossed with intricate designs, and the pages were yellowed with age. Ella opened it, revealing elegant handwriting and strange symbols. The first entry caught her attention:

*"March 15, 1965: Today I discovered something extraordinary. This diary is no ordinary book; it has the power to transport its reader through time. I am both excited and terrified by this discovery."*

Ella's heart raced. "Time travel? That can't be real," she muttered to herself.

She flipped through more pages, finding detailed notes about different historical periods and instructions on how to activate the device mentioned in the diary. The last entry described a device hidden within the diary's cover that could be used for time travel. Ella's curiosity got the better of her. She carefully examined the diary and found a small compartment.

Inside the compartment was an old, brass key with strange engravings. Ella held it up to the light, intrigued and skeptical. "Could this be the key to time travel?" she wondered aloud.

A knock on her door interrupted her thoughts. "Ella, are you still up there?" Ryan's voice echoed through the attic.

"Yeah, Ryan, I'm here!" Ella called back.

Ryan bounded up the stairs and skidded into the attic, his face lit up with excitement. "What are you doing? I found some old toys in the garage. Want to play with me?"

Ella glanced at the diary and key in her hands. "Not right now, Ryan. I'm just sorting through some old stuff."

Ryan's eyes landed on the diary. "What's that?"

"It's just an old diary I found," Ella said quickly, hiding the key behind her back. "Nothing special."

Ryan shrugged and started rummaging through the boxes. "Okay. I'll be downstairs if you change your mind."

As Ryan left, Ella's curiosity got the better of her. She studied the diary further, finding a peculiar inscription near the end: *"To unlock the past, one must journey with a heart both brave and pure."*

Ella's skepticism began to waver. Could this be more than just a fantasy? She took a deep breath and decided to experiment. Following the instructions from the diary, she placed the key into a hidden slot on the side. A soft click resonated through the attic.

The air around her seemed to shimmer, and Ella felt a strange sensation, as though she was being gently pulled. Her heart pounded in her chest. "This is crazy," she whispered, but she couldn't deny the excitement bubbling inside her.

Suddenly, the attic was filled with a bright light. Ella shielded her eyes, feeling an odd sensation of weightlessness. When she opened her eyes again, the attic was gone. Instead, she found herself in a different setting—an old-fashioned room with vintage furniture and a large window revealing a bustling city street from the past.

Ella's mouth fell open in awe. "Where am I?" she breathed, her voice echoing in the unfamiliar room.

She explored her surroundings, trying to make sense of her location. The room was decorated with items that seemed decades old, and a calendar on the wall showed the date as March 15, 1965.

Ella looked at the diary in her hands and then at the brass key. "This must be it," she said. "I really traveled through time."

She glanced out the window, her mind racing with possibilities. The lockdown, the boredom, and the monotony of her current life felt miles away. For the first time in a long while, Ella felt a spark of adventure.

"I need to figure out how this works," she said to herself. "And maybe find out what this time travel thing is all about."

With newfound determination, Ella set off to explore this new world and uncover the secrets hidden within the diary. Little did she know, her journey through time was only just beginning.
