Chapter 1 - Episode 1: I Got into Where!?

Mina Tanaka was having one of those mornings where everything seemed destined to go wrong. The kind of morning where you wonder if the universe is out to get you, or if you're just extraordinarily unlucky. As she stared at herself in the mirror, she couldn't help but groan. Her hair, a wild mane of thick, dark curls, had rebelled against every attempt at taming it. No matter how much she brushed, it always seemed to spring back into its unruly state, as if mocking her efforts.

She glanced at the clock, 7:10 AM. She had exactly ten minutes to be out the door if she had any hope of catching the bus, and here she was, still wrestling with her hair. Great. Just great.

"Mina, you're going to be late again!" her mother's voice echoed from downstairs, laced with the kind of exasperation that only comes from repeated warnings.

"I know, I know!" Mina called back, trying to sound more in control than she felt. With a final, frustrated tug, she gave up on her hair and hastily tied it into a messy ponytail that did little to hide the chaos atop her head.

She threw on her school uniform, a simple, navy blue skirt and white blouse, but as soon as she slipped into the blouse, the left bra strap slid off her shoulder. Mina sighed, reaching under the fabric to adjust it, only for the right strap to fall as well.

"Seriously?" she muttered, trying to fix both straps simultaneously. After a few seconds of fumbling, she managed to get them back in place, though she had no illusions about them staying put. It was just one of those days.

She bolted down the stairs, almost tripping over her own feet in her haste, and skidded into the kitchen. The smell of something slightly burnt hit her nostrils, and Mina's eyes widened in alarm.

"Oh no, the toast!"

She rushed to the toaster and yanked out the slice just in time to see that it was more charcoal than breakfast. She stared at the blackened toast, half-expecting it to crumble to ash in her hand.

"Perfect. Just perfect," she grumbled, staring at the ruined slice as if it had personally betrayed her.

She had no time to make another one, so she shoved the barely edible toast into her mouth, grabbed her bag, and dashed out the door. The school bus was probably already at the stop, and if she missed it… well, it wouldn't be the first time.

The morning air was cool against her skin as she sprinted down the sidewalk, her bag bouncing against her back, the toast still clenched between her teeth. The suburban neighborhood around her was calm and orderly, neatly trimmed lawns, white picket fences, and two-story houses all in a row. It was the kind of place where nothing exciting ever happened, where each day was a carbon copy of the last.

"Late again, late again, late again," Mina muttered to herself, pushing her legs to go faster. Her sneakers slapped against the pavement, the sound echoing in the otherwise quiet street.

The bus stop came into view, and sure enough, the yellow school bus was already there, its doors wide open as if taunting her. A small group of students stood around, chatting and laughing, their backpacks slung casually over their shoulders. Mina recognized them immediately, Abby, the queen bee of their class, with her perfectly straight blonde hair and designer clothes; Jason, the star athlete with an easy smile and an attitude to match; and Melissa, Abby's loyal sidekick, who seemed to exist solely to agree with everything Abby said.

As soon as they saw Mina sprinting toward them, Abby nudged Melissa and whispered something that made them both giggle. Mina's heart sank. She knew that laugh all too well.

"Wait! I'm here!" Mina tried to shout, but with the toast still in her mouth, it came out more like a muffled groan.

Just as she was about to reach the bus, it pulled away with a roar of the engine, leaving her behind in a cloud of exhaust. Mina skidded to a stop, staring in disbelief as the bus trundled off without her. She spat out the toast into the gutter, watching it land with a soggy thud.

"Wtf? Seriously?!" She threw her hands in the air, feeling the universe laugh at her misfortune.

Abby, Jason, and Melissa watched the scene unfold with barely concealed amusement. Abby flipped her hair over her shoulder and gave Mina a condescending smile.

"Better luck tomorrow, Mina," she called out, her voice dripping with fake sweetness. Jason chuckled, and Melissa covered her mouth as if trying to stifle her laughter.

Mina forced a smile and waved them off, even as she felt her cheeks burn with embarrassment. As the bus disappeared down the street, she sighed and began the long walk to school. It wasn't that far, but it gave her plenty of time to wallow in self-pity.

Why did mornings always have to suck so much?

By the time she finally arrived at school, the first bell had already rung, and Mina slipped into her classroom as quietly as possible, hoping not to draw any more attention to herself. The classroom was just as she remembered it, rows of desks arranged neatly in lines, the walls covered in posters about geometry and grammar, and the fluorescent lights casting a harsh, unflattering glow over everything.

Mina's desk was in the middle of the room, surrounded by classmates who barely acknowledged her existence. As she settled into her seat, she couldn't help but notice Abby and her crew whispering and giggling at something on Abby's phone. Mina didn't need to guess what, or rather, who, they were laughing about. She slouched down in her chair, wishing she could disappear.

The day dragged on with the usual monotony, teachers droning on about subjects that felt more abstract and irrelevant with each passing hour. Mina's thoughts drifted to the more exciting lives she imagined others must lead, filled with adventures, love, and maybe even a little danger, anything but the dull routine she was stuck in.

When the final bell rang, Mina couldn't get out of there fast enough. She practically bolted out of the school building, the weight of the day's humiliations pressing down on her. As she walked home, she replayed the day in her mind, each awkward moment magnified until she felt like a complete and utter failure.

When Mina finally reached her front door, she noticed something strange, a small, elegant envelope lying on the doormat. She paused, confused. Who sent letters these days? And who would send one to her?

She bent down to pick it up, her fingers brushing against the creamy, high-quality paper. Her name was written in beautiful, flowing script on the front, and it was sealed with a wax emblem of a raven, a detail that sent a shiver down her spine.

"Okay… this is weird," she muttered to herself, turning the envelope over in her hands. She half-expected it to disappear in a puff of smoke, like something out of a fantasy novel. But it didn't, and her curiosity got the better of her. She carefully broke the seal and unfolded the letter inside.

As her eyes scanned the first few lines, Mina's heart began to race.

"Dear Miss Mina Tanaka, you are hereby invited to attend Blackwell Academy…"

Mina blinked, rereading the sentence to make sure she hadn't misunderstood. Blackwell Academy? The Blackwell Academy? The one that was, like, insanely prestigious and filled with rich, talented students who probably wore designer clothes just to go to class? This had to be a joke. Some elaborate prank that Abby and her crew had concocted to make her look like a fool.

She flipped the letter over, looking for any signs that it was fake, but everything seemed genuine, the heavy, expensive paper, the immaculate handwriting, the wax seal. And the more she read, the more real it seemed. The letter went on to explain that she had been awarded a full scholarship to attend Blackwell Academy because of her "unique potential."

"Unique potential?" Mina said aloud, incredulous. "What unique potential? My talent for burning toast?"

She shook her head, trying to make sense of it. There was a phone number at the bottom of the letter for the Blackwell Academy Enrollment Office. Mina stared at it for a long moment, debating whether or not to call. After all, this could still be some kind of mistake, or worse, a cruel joke.

But her curiosity won out, and she pulled out her phone, dialing the number with trembling fingers. She half-expected no one to answer, but after a few rings, a calm, professional voice came on the line.

"Blackwell Academy Enrollment Office, how may I assist you?" the woman said, her tone polite and formal.

"Uh… hi," Mina said, feeling suddenly awkward. "This is Mina Tanaka… I got a letter from you, but I think there's been a mistake…"

"Ah, Miss Tanaka," the woman said, her voice smooth and reassuring. "There is no mistake. You have been selected to attend Blackwell Academy on a full scholarship. We are pleased to offer you a place at our school."

Mina's heart pounded in her chest. This was real. This was actually happening. She had to sit down, feeling lightheaded.

"But… why me?" she asked, still struggling to wrap her head around it. "I mean, I'm just… normal."

"At Blackwell Academy, we value qualities beyond mere academics, Miss Tanaka," the woman replied, as if this was the most natural thing in the world. "We believe you possess something special."

Mina didn't know what to say. The conversation ended with the woman assuring her that all the necessary details would be sent in a follow-up letter and that her place at Blackwell Academy was guaranteed. She hung up the phone, staring at it as if it were a foreign object. This was insane. This was… exciting. For the first time in her life, something genuinely interesting was happening. Maybe this was the adventure she'd always dreamed of, a chance to escape her boring, ordinary world.

By the time she had processed what had just happened, it was dark outside. Mina spent the rest of the evening in a daze, replaying the phone call in her mind, her heart fluttering with a mixture of excitement and fear. The next morning, she could barely contain herself as she packed her bags, filled with a strange mix of anticipation and anxiety.

The next morning, Mina stood at the train station, her suitcase by her side, staring up at the towering Gothic structure of Blackwell Academy in the distance. The train ride had been long, giving her plenty of time to second-guess her decision, but now that she was here, there was no turning back.

The academy loomed over the surrounding landscape like a castle from a dark fairy tale, its spires piercing the sky, shrouded in a thick mist that gave the place an eerie, otherworldly feel. It looked like something straight out of a horror movie, beautiful, imposing, and more than a little terrifying.

Mina hesitated at the gates, her heart pounding in her chest. Was this really the right decision? What if she didn't fit in? What if she made a complete fool of herself? But before she could dwell on it, she took a deep breath, gathered what little courage she had, and stepped inside.

The academy grounds were immaculate, a far cry from the modest neighborhood she had left behind. Perfectly manicured gardens lined the cobblestone pathways, with towering statues of robed figures standing watch at every corner. The buildings were massive, constructed of dark stone, with gargoyles perched on the ledges, their eyes seemingly following her every move.

As she wandered through the courtyard, taking in the grandeur of the place, Mina couldn't help but feel completely out of her depth. Everywhere she looked, she saw students dressed in elegant uniforms, moving about with an air of confidence and purpose that she could never hope to imitate. They all looked so… sophisticated, like they belonged here. Unlike her.

Just as she was starting to feel the first pangs of regret, she noticed a tall, dark-haired boy walking toward her, his eyes fixed on the path ahead. He was strikingly handsome, with sharp features and a brooding expression that made him look like he had stepped straight out of a vampire novel. Mina was so caught up in watching him that she didn't notice where she was going.

"Whoa!" she yelped as she collided with him, her feet tangling up beneath her. She flailed her arms, desperately trying to catch her balance, but gravity had other plans. Her heart jumped into her throat as she realized she was going down.

Time seemed to slow as she fell, her skirt billowing up around her. She could feel the cool breeze against her legs, and then it happened, a gust of wind, completely out of nowhere, caught her skirt and flipped it up. Her white cotton panties flashed for all to see.

"Wtf? Where did that gust of wind come from?" Mina's thoughts raced, her face heating up with embarrassment.

Before she could hit the ground, a pair of strong hands caught her, steadying her. She blinked, finding herself looking up into the boy's piercing eyes. He didn't say a word about the wardrobe malfunction, didn't even react, really, but there was a subtle twitch at the corner of his mouth, like he was fighting back a smile.

"I-I'm so sorry!" Mina stammered, trying to regain her composure as she quickly smoothed down her skirt. "I wasn't looking where I was going…"

The boy's expression softened slightly, and he gave her a small, almost amused smile. His voice, when he spoke, was smooth and low, with a faint European accent that made her knees feel just a little weak.

"No harm done," he said, his tone polite but distant. "You should be more careful, though. Blackwell Academy can be… a dangerous place."

Mina blinked up at him, her heart still racing. Was it just her, or did that sound like a warning?

Before she could ask what he meant, the academy's bell tolled loudly, the deep, resonant sound echoing through the courtyard and making her jump.

"Oh no, the bell! I'm going to be late!" Mina gasped, suddenly remembering that she had an orientation to get to. She quickly grabbed her suitcase, fumbling with the handle in her haste.

"Orientation is in the main hall. Don't get lost… Mina," the boy called after her, his voice carrying easily over the din.

Mina froze mid-step, turning back to look at him in shock. How did he know her name? She opened her mouth to ask, but before she could get the words out, he had already turned away, disappearing into the shadows of the academy like a ghost.

Her mind whirling with questions, Mina hurried towards the main hall, her footsteps echoing loudly in the empty corridors. The walls were lined with dark wood paneling, the floors covered in rich, red carpets that muffled her hurried steps. Stained glass windows depicted scenes that seemed to come alive in the shifting light, casting colorful shadows that danced across the floor.

When she finally arrived at the main hall, it was already filled with new students, all seated in neat rows, their faces a mix of excitement and nervousness. Mina slipped into a seat near the back, trying to make herself as inconspicuous as possible. She looked around, taking in the grandeur of the hall, the high, vaulted ceilings, the intricate carvings on the walls, the massive chandeliers that cast a warm, golden light over everything.

Despite the beauty of the place, there was something unsettling about it, something she couldn't quite put her finger on. The air was heavy, almost oppressive, and the silence was thick with anticipation, as if the very walls were holding their breath, waiting for something to happen.

Her thoughts kept drifting back to the boy she had met in the courtyard. Who was he? And how had he known her name? The way he had spoken to her, the warning in his voice, it made her feel like she was stepping into a world she didn't fully understand, a world filled with secrets and danger.

What had she gotten herself into?

Before she could dwell on it any further, the headmaster stepped up to the podium at the front of the hall, his presence commanding immediate attention. He was an older man, with silver hair slicked back and sharp, hawk-like features. His eyes were piercing, scanning the room as if he could see right through the students seated before him.

"Welcome to Blackwell Academy," the headmaster began, his voice deep and resonant, echoing off the walls. "You have been chosen for your unique talents, and we expect great things from each of you. But be warned… not all is as it seems within these walls."

Mina felt a shiver run down her spine at his words. There was something about the way he said it, the gravity in his tone, that made her believe him. She glanced around at the other students, wondering if they felt it too, the sense of foreboding that seemed to hang in the air like a dark cloud.

The headmaster continued, outlining the rules and expectations of the academy, but Mina found it hard to focus. Her mind was still racing, filled with thoughts of the mysterious boy, the strange atmosphere of the academy, and the unsettling feeling that she was stepping into a world where anything could happen.

As the headmaster finished his speech, the students began to file out of the hall, talking excitedly among themselves. Mina stood up, feeling like she was in a daze. She had so many questions, but no answers, and the weight of it all was starting to press down on her.

She was about to leave when she felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned around to see a girl with long, dark hair and bright, inquisitive eyes standing behind her.

"Hi," the girl said, smiling warmly. "I'm Eliza. You're new here too, right?"

Mina nodded, feeling a little overwhelmed by the girl's friendliness. "Yeah, I just got here this morning."

"Great! We can be new together," Eliza said, linking her arm through Mina's before she could protest. "Come on, let's go explore. I heard there's a library here that's bigger than a football field!"

Mina couldn't help but smile at Eliza's enthusiasm, her earlier anxieties beginning to melt away in the face of her new friend's infectious energy. Maybe things wouldn't be so bad after all.

As they walked through the grand halls of Blackwell Academy, Mina's thoughts returned to the strange boy in the courtyard. She didn't know what to make of him, or the warning he had given her, but one thing was certain, her life was about to get a lot more interesting.

And for the first time in a long while, she was ready for it.
