Chapter 3 - The Keeper’s Warning

The mysterious figure brushed the snow from their cloak, the cold fury in their eyes barely concealed beneath a calm exterior. Alex, Lily, and Jack watched cautiously as the figure approached, still wary from their earlier confrontation."Who are you?" Lily demanded, her voice strong despite the tremor in her heart. "And what do you mean, there are others?"The figure sighed, a sound that seemed to carry the weight of many lifetimes. "My name is Arcturus," they said, their voice softer now, almost sorrowful. "I am the Keeper of the Winter Relics, sworn to protect their power and ensure it is never misused. But as you can see, I have failed.""Failed?" Jack echoed, frowning. "You tried to unleash the Snowflake's power. How does that make you a protector?"Arcturus shook their head. "You misunderstand. I was trying to contain it, to harness it so that it wouldn't fall into the wrong hands. But the relics are tricky, with wills of their own. They crave release, and if not kept in check, they will awaken their full potential—and that would bring disaster."Alex's eyes narrowed as he studied Arcturus. "Why should we believe you? You were about to use the Snowflake's power for yourself.""Believe what you will," Arcturus replied, looking directly at Alex. "But the relics are far older and more dangerous than you realize. The Snowflake is just one of five—the Relics of the Seasons. Together, they control the balance of nature itself. If they are all awakened, the world as you know it will change, and not for the better."Lily felt a chill that had nothing to do with the cold. "Then we have to stop them. We can't let the other relics be awakened."Arcturus gave a small, bitter smile. "Easier said than done, child. The relics are hidden, scattered across the land, each guarded by trials that test the worth of those who seek them. And you won't be the only ones searching. There are others—those who desire the power of the relics for their own ends. They will stop at nothing to claim them."The three friends exchanged uneasy glances. They had only just managed to seal the Snowflake; the thought of facing more challenges, especially ones with even greater stakes, was daunting."But we can't just leave them out there," Jack said firmly. "If what you're saying is true, then we have to find them before anyone else does."Arcturus nodded slowly. "Very well. If you are truly committed to this path, I will help you. But know this: once you begin, there is no turning back. The quest for the relics will test not just your strength, but your resolve, your friendship, and your very souls.""We're ready," Alex said, his voice resolute. "We've come this far, and we're not going to stop now."Lily and Jack nodded in agreement. Despite the fear and uncertainty that gnawed at them, they knew they couldn't walk away from this responsibility."Then listen closely," Arcturus said, their voice growing more serious. "The next relic, the Emberstone, lies within the fiery depths of Mount Ignis, far to the south. It is guarded by the ancient spirit of fire, a creature of immense power. To reach it, you will need to cross the Burning Plains, a land where even the air is ablaze with heat. But the Emberstone is also a key—a key to understanding how to control the other relics. Without it, you won't stand a chance against what's coming.""Mount Ignis?" Lily repeated, feeling a mixture of dread and curiosity. "That's so far away… How are we supposed to get there?"Arcturus waved a hand, and from the snow beneath them, a shimmering portal began to form. "This will take you to the edge of the Burning Plains. From there, you must rely on your own wits and strength. Remember, the relics are not just objects—they are alive, in their own way. They will test you, but they can also be reasoned with. If you prove yourselves worthy, they may choose to aid you."The friends stood at the edge of the portal, the swirling light reflecting in their eyes. The journey ahead was daunting, filled with unknown dangers, but they had no choice. The fate of their world might very well depend on their success."Thank you," Alex said, looking back at Arcturus. "For guiding us."Arcturus simply nodded, their expression unreadable. "Do not thank me yet. The path ahead is long, and the trials will be harsh. But remember, you are not alone. As long as you trust in each other, you will find the strength to overcome whatever lies ahead."With a deep breath, Alex, Lily, and Jack stepped into the portal, the world around them dissolving into light. As they were pulled through the fabric of space, a final thought crossed their minds—this was only the beginning.
